    Coronavirus update for cruise guests

Update October 8, 2021

Visiting ports update.

From 1st November, you can choose to go ashore to see the sights on your own, while also enjoying your included sightseeing excursions, and our range of optional tours. The on-board team will be able to advise, depending on any local restrictions at the time of your visit.

Update August 27, 2021

A message to all guests booked on the Coastlines of the Croatia cruise aboard Spirit of Discovery departing September 2, 2021.

Details of your shore excursion programme for the forthcoming Coastlines of the Croatia cruise are available to book from today. You may find it easier and quicker to book online. A full detailed description of each excursion is available at travel.saga.co.uk/mytravel.

To help you choose the excursions most suitable for you, we have graded each according to the level of walking or activity involved. Alternatively you can call our cruise consultants on 0‍8‍0‍0 0‍5‍6 7‍5‍3‍4.

As you may be aware, in the last 24 hours it was announced that Montenegro would move to the government’s red travel list from 30th August. This means we will no longer be able to visit Kotor, Montenegro, on 13th September as planned. We have secured Dubrovnik, Croatia, as an alternative and we will update you with details of the excursion programme onboard.

Update August 24, 2021

A message to all guests booked on the Postcards from the Baltic cruise aboard Spirit of Adventure departing August 29, 2021.

Details of your shore excursion programme for the forthcoming Postcards from the Baltic cruise have now been sent to you and should arrive on Wednesday 25th August. Update August 19, 2021

A message to all guests booked on the Coastlines of Croatia cruise aboard Spirit of Discovery departing September 2, 2021.

It’s not long now until we welcome you onboard for your cruise, Coastlines of Croatia, and I am sure that you are looking forward to this as much as we are.

As you would expect, we have been closely monitoring the entry requirements for each country to be visited on your cruise. Whilst you will still visit most ports as originally planned, it has been necessary to make some changes to your itinerary, including your port of embarkation to Tilbury.

Due to restrictions imposed by visiting Spain and Italy, the ship will no longer be able to call at Malaga, Venice and Mahon. We will however be able to add Ajaccio, Corsica, and Lisbon and Leixões, Portugal, to the itinerary. It has also been necessary to amend the order of the remaining ports, and your cruise itinerary will now operate as follows:

  • September 2, 2021. Tilbury.
  • September 3-5. At sea.
  • September 6. Gibraltar.
  • September 7-8. At sea.
  • September 9. Valetta, Malta.
  • September 10. At sea.
  • September 11. Hvar*, Croatia
  • September 12. Split, Croatia.
  • September 13. Kotor*, Montenegro.
  • September 14-15. At sea.
  • September 16. Ajaccio, Corsica.
  • September 17-19. At sea.
  • September 20. Lisbon, Portugal.
  • September 21. Leixões (for Oporto), Portugal.
  • September 22-23. As sea.
  • September 24. Southampton.

*Land by launch or tender.

I would like to apologise for this late change, and to acknowledge any disappointment this may cause, we will refund you 5% of the value of your cruise as compensation should you maintain your booking on the revised itinerary. If you are happy with this change, you do not need to take any action and your compensation will be refunded before your departure date. As you will now embark at Tilbury, we will also amend any travel arrangements booked through Saga. Of course, if you would rather amend or cancel your booking, please call one of our Cruise Consultants on 0800 092 3911 and they will be happy to arrange this for you.

Lastly, may I take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for the support you have shown to both myself and my team over this last 16 months. We are all looking forward to finally welcoming you on board on September 2.

International cruising update.

We are pleased to confirm that Spirit of Adventure will embark on her first international cruise on August 29, with Spirit of Discovery following her on September 02, 2021. Update July 30, 2021

International cruising update.

We are pleased to see that Government has now lifted its restrictions on international cruising. Please bear with us, whilst we work through the impact of this change and understand better what additional requirements will be required when we operate international cruises again from August 29th onwards.

Update July 14, 2021

A message to all guests booked on the Italian Charms cruise aboard Spirit of Discovery departing August 15, 2021.

As you will be aware, the UK government have recently announced changes to the restrictions in place for international travel which have been welcomed by us all.

However, the advice around international cruising and in particular that of the FCDO has not changed meaning there remains continued uncertainty around the resumption of cruising outside of the British Isles.

Whilst this uncertainty remains, we are unable to proceed with the planned itinerary for your cruise this summer. I appreciate that this will come as disappointing news to you as I know that many of our guests are keen to join us onboard again as soon as possible.

With this in mind, we have put together three shorter cruises around the British Isles, to replace your cruise and my team will be calling you over the next 10 days to discuss these and the other options available to you, including a full refund. Our call lines remain extremely busy so please do not call us as we will be contacting all affected guests in booking date order.

May I once again take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for the support you have shown both myself and my team over this last 15 months and I hope that we can look forward to welcoming you onboard in the near future.

Update June 21, 2021

A message following the government announcement to extend restrictions until July 19, 2021.

On June 14, the government announced that the relaxation of social distancing laws and other Covid-19 restrictions had been delayed by a further four weeks. Obviously, this had an unavoidable effect on our upcoming cruises which are setting sail during that time.

Sadly, this means that in order to comply, we have been forced to reduce our on-board capacity by 50%. As I am sure you will appreciate, this is a difficult situation for us, as we know how much our guests are looking forward to cruising with us again. The fairest way to approach this situation, was to honour the bookings for the guests who booked first, until the ship reached 50% capacity.

All guests who booked after this and whom we are unable to legally accommodate, have instead been given the opportunity to move their booking to another date of their choosing, or of course to cancel with a full refund. All affected guests on the first two ‘return to service’ cruises on June 27 and July 3 have now been contacted.

To compensate for this unavoidable situation, we have offered these guests a 25% future cruise credit, and also the opportunity to move their booking to a longer cruise to the Canary Islands later in the year, at no extra cost.

However, I do fully appreciate this has not been a positive experience for those affected, and can assure you this is not a decision we have taken lightly. Regrettably, the situation has been imposed on us by the government and we have to fully respect their decision and to abide by the law. I would like to offer my sincere apologies to all those affected. The past 15 months have been a challenge for all of us, and your support during this time has seen all of us through, and is greatly appreciated.

We cannot wait to bring Spirit of Discovery back into service, and to finally launch her sister ship Spirit of Adventure, and will be doing so while keeping the health and safety of our guests and crew as our number one priority.

Update June 11, 2021

A message to all guests booked on From the Northern Isles to the Fjords aboard Spirit of Discovery departing July 3, 2021.

I trust you are well, and are now enjoying the reassurance and feeling of well-being that having received both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine gives – I know I am.

I am writing with an update about your cruise following the news this week from Scotland, which has forced us to review itineraries. You would already have been aware that the Scottish government’s roadmap out of lockdown differs from that in other parts of the UK. As part of this, as you may have seen, earlier this week, the Scottish government said it would not be accepting cruise ships until the country reaches level 1 and restrictions are lifted. The next review of this will not now be until June 28.

This clearly creates significant uncertainty for us and for you and, against this backdrop, we have taken the difficult decision to amend the itinerary of your cruise. I appreciate you may well be disappointed by this news, but we were left with little choice and have acted quickly to ensure a new itinerary that we are confident will be popular with guests who are so keen to return to cruising.

Your amended itinerary will now see Spirit of Discovery visit the West Coast of England.

  • July 3, 2021. Tilbury. Depart 1800.
  • July 4. Portsmouth. Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
  • July 5. Falmouth*. Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
  • July 6. Scenic cruising North Cornwall.
  • July 7. Bristol. Arrive 0600. Depart 1700.
  • July 8. Scilly Isles*. Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
  • July 9. Portland. Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
  • July 10. Scenic cruising South Coast
  • July 11. Tilbury. Arrive 0700.

*Land by launch or tender.

Separately, we will send to you in the coming weeks a revised shore excursion programme detailing the opportunities for both the included and optional excursions, allowing you to explore these delightful areas of the UK. Update June 9, 2021

A message to all guests booked on Scottish Highlands and Islands cruise aboard Spirit of Discovery departing June 27, 2021 and From the Northern Isles to the Fjords aboard Spirit of Discovery departing July 3, 2021.

In the light of yesterday’s statement from the Scottish government, we are currently reviewing the itineraries for our first two Scottish Isles cruises on Spirit of Discovery. We will update our guests booked on these cruises by the end of this week.

Update March 5, 2021

A message to all guests booked on cruises aboard Spirit of Discovery in June 2021, and cruises aboard Spirit of Adventure from May 2021 to July 2021.

I hope that you have continued to keep safe and well since I last wrote to you in January and that you have started to receive your COVID-19 vaccinations.

The Government’s recent announcement of the roadmap out of lockdown and the timelines contained within it have enabled us to further review our plans to return to service.

As you will know, we had planned our first cruise in May with Spirit of Adventure’s inaugural sailing and June for Spirit of Discovery. Whilst the Government’s announcement indicated that the earliest date international travel could restart was May 17th, it is unclear exactly what this means for the cruising industry. What is clear is that after June 21st social distancing rules will be relaxed, which will in turn allow us to offer an onboard experience as close as possible to what you would have previously experienced.

With this in mind, having carefully considered our options, we have taken the decision to delay our return to service once more and will commence our cruising programme from June 27th with Spirit of Discovery, and the inaugural cruise of Spirit of Adventure will now take place on July 26th.

I understand that you will have questions regarding what this means for you and also the itineraries that we will now be offering. If you were booked on the inaugural cruise, we have taken the liberty of transferring your booking over to the new sailing date and will call you to discuss this and the new itinerary over the next few days. For everyone else, please do not worry, as my team will be contacting you over the coming weeks to discuss all of your options with you.

Finally, I wanted to say thank you again for your invaluable support and understanding over what has been an extremely challenging year for us all. We are all looking forward to welcoming you onboard and until then please stay safe.

Update January 20, 2021

A message to all guests booked on cruises aboard Spirit of Discovery from April 2021, and cruises aboard Spirit of Adventure from May 2021 to December 2021.

First and foremost, I hope this message finds you well. Since I last wrote to you, we have welcomed the news that the COVID‑19 vaccination programme has started to be rolled out across the country, with many of our guests amongst the first groups of people being offered the vaccine.

It is with this in mind that we have once more reviewed our health and safety procedures to ensure we are providing the safest possible cruise experience. We have taken the decision to introduce the requirement that all guests must be fully vaccinated against COVID‑19 at least 14 days before sailing with us. This new measure will be in addition to the detailed arrangements we have already made in preparation for our return to service, which have been recognised and led to us being the first operator to receive the highest possible standard of health and safety protocols from Lloyd’s Register.

In order to allow our guests sufficient time to be fully vaccinated, we have decided to delay the restart of our cruise programme which was due to commence on 3rd April with Spirit of Discovery. Instead our programme will begin with Spirit of Adventure’s inaugural voyage on 4th May and our Secrets of Corsica and Sardinia cruise aboard Spirit of Discovery will now sail on the 2nd June. We will be contacting all guests affected to discuss their options.

This means that, all cruises prior to this will no longer go ahead as planned which I am sure will come as a huge disappointment to you, but I also know that you will understand our reasons behind this. As our phonelines can get busy at times, please do not worry about contacting us at this stage as my team will be in touch with you over the next two weeks to either transfer your cruise departure date (for those booked on Secrets of Corsica and Sardinia) or advise on your options and answer any questions you may have. If you are unable to transfer your booking to a later cruise, we will of course arrange a full refund for you.

Please see our list of questions and answers which I would kindly ask that you read as I hope these will give you some reassurance and answer any questions you may have. As always, my team and I are available should you wish to discuss anything with us directly.

Your continued support and understanding are very much appreciated. I very much look forward to welcoming you on board later this year. Until then, I hope that you and your family stay safe.

Update December 14th, 2020

A message to all guests booked on Autumn Colours of the USA and Canada cruise aboard Spirit of Discovery departing September 29, 2021

You may be aware that the US government has recently published new regulations regarding the resumption of cruising, which include limits on the duration of any cruises calling at US ports. Having reviewed these regulations, we have concluded that it will not be possible for us to operate our ‘Autumn Colours of the USA and Canada’ cruise departing 29 September 2021 as currently planned. Following careful consideration, we have taken the very difficult decision to cancel this cruise.

As you know the safety and wellbeing of both our guests and crew are of paramount importance to us, and whilst I know that this news will be disappointing, I also know that you will understand our reasoning and appreciate us making this decision sooner rather than later.

However, we are pleased to be able to announce that in its place, and to celebrate Saga’s 70th Anniversary, there will be 17-night ‘Mediterranean Anniversary Celebration’’ cruise departing on 29 September 2021. Join faces from the past and present on this cruise, including myself and Saga’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Euan Sutherland, to mark this milestone in Saga’s history. Following this cruise, there will be a 12-night ‘Highlights of the Canaries’ cruise departing on 16 October 2021.

Our phonelines can get busy at times, therefore, please do not worry about contacting us to discuss your cruise as my team will be contacting you over the next couple of weeks to advise on your options and answer any questions you may have. If you are unable to transfer your booking to an alternative sailing, we will arrange a full refund for you.

Your continued support and understanding are very much appreciated, and I look forward to welcoming you on board next year. Until then, I hope that you and your family stay safe, and may I take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Update November 3rd, 2020

A message to all guests booked on February and March 2021 cruises aboard Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure

I recently wrote to you regarding our decision to extend our cruise suspension against the backdrop of the COVID‑19 second wave and the fact that most countries around the world are not accepting cruise ships.

Since then, we have sadly seen the predicted restrictions on day-to-day life increasing. This has led us to further review our planned dates for a return to service, as the seasonal impact of COVID‑19 would indicate that we are unlikely to be able to cruise in February on Spirit of Adventure, or March on Spirit of Discovery.

I would therefore like to confirm that, following careful consideration, we have taken the very difficult decision to postpone our return to service for Spirit of Discovery until April 2021 and Spirit of Adventure’s inaugural cruise has also been rescheduled and she will now sail for the first time on May 4, 2021. This means that all cruises up to these dates will no longer operate and your cruise will not be going ahead as planned.

Whilst I know that this news will be disappointing, I also know that you will understand our reasoning and appreciate us making this decision sooner rather than later.

A letter will be arriving today, please do not worry about contacting us to discuss your cruise as our phonelines can get busy at times and my team will be contacting you over the next couple of weeks to advise on your options and answer any questions you may have. If you are unable to transfer your booking to a later cruise, we will arrange a full refund for you.

As you know the safety and wellbeing of both our guests and crew are of paramount importance to us and as mentioned in my previous letter to you, we will continue to review our COVID‑19 protocols and arrangements on a regular basis to ensure we provide a safe environment for everyone.

Your continued support and understanding are very much appreciated, and I look forward to welcoming you on board next year. Until then, I hope that you and your family stay safe.

Update: September 29th, 2020

A message to all customers booked on cruises from November 2020 to February 2021 for Spirit of Adventure and March 2021 for Spirit of Discovery

This year, we have all faced unprecedented challenges as a result of the outbreak of the COVID‑19 pandemic. For us at Saga Cruises, this has meant that we haven’t been able to sail since March when we introduced a suspension of our operations to keep our guests and crew safe. Over the past few months, we have been working hard to put into place detailed plans to safely return to cruising when the time is right.

Whilst we have made fantastic progress with this work, sadly, most countries around the world are not accepting cruise ships and we do not see this changing for the remainder of this year. Therefore, against the backdrop of the recent news that COVID‑19 is again on the increase and the announcements of further restrictions, I am writing to inform you that we are postponing the Inaugural cruise of our new ship, Spirit of Adventure until 5th February, 2021 and extending the suspension of our cruising operations up to and including 4th February, 2021 for Spirit of Adventure and 7th March, 2021 for Spirit of Discovery.

I know how disappointing this news will be for many of you who were so looking forward to a return to cruising and, perhaps particularly, for those who were as excited as we were to see Spirit of Adventure set sail later this year.

I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some of the new arrangements we have made in preparation for our return to service next year. Initially these will apply to all sailings up to the end of March 2021 and will be reviewed on a monthly basis going forward:

  • Pre-departure COVID‑19 testing at home and in the terminal for guests and crew including full medical screening
  • A reduced capacity of guests onboard to a maximum of 800
  • Increasing our crew to guest ratio, to enhance our cleaning regimes onboard
  • Private chauffeur car per household up to 250 miles
  • Social distancing which feels subtle onboard our spacious ships
  • Face coverings being worn in all internal public areas
  • Additional enhancements to our state-of-the-art air conditioning, which already provides 100% fresh air in all public areas and cabins
  • Improved and expanded medical facilities with a new dedicated isolation area
  • Double medical team

A letter will be arriving today, and at this point you need do no more as my team will be contacting you over the coming weeks to discuss the alternative options with you. If you are unable to transfer your booking to a later cruise, you will of course receive a full refund.

I will continue to keep you updated and once again would like to thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Until we can sail again, please stay safe.

Update: August 4, 2020

Updated cruise schedule

As you know I have been keen to keep all of our guests updated on the changes we have made to our cruising schedule as a result of COVID‑19. My team have tried to contact all of those guests booked on a cruise that we have sadly cancelled but please rest assured that if we have not been able to speak with you yet, we will continue to try. All guests booked on a cancelled cruise have been offered the option to amend to a future Saga Cruise with an additional 10% discount or receive a full refund.

I am now also pleased to share with you our updated cruise schedule for the remainder of this year and the beginning of next year. Further details of these itineraries can be found on the Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure cruise calendars.

I look forward to welcoming you onboard in the not to distant future, until that time though, please stay safe.

Update: August 3, 2020

A message for guests booked on Spirit of Adventure cruise Christmas Sights of Amsterdam (SU008)

As you know, we remain in a period of uncertainty as to when we can fully operate due to the COVID‑19 pandemic. We are continuing to look forward in an effort to plan ahead and communicate with you at the earliest opportunity on any decisions that we make.

Following my previous announcement that Spirit of Adventure’s inaugural cruise will now depart on 5th November 2020, I am now in a position to confirm that sadly Christmas Sights of Amsterdam which was due to depart on 16th December has been cancelled.

I appreciate that this will come as a disappointment to you however, should you decide to amend your booking to a future Saga Ocean cruise departing either later this year or during 2021 or 2022, we will transfer the full amount you paid for this cruise, plus an additional 10% onto the alternative booking. We do also still have some availability on Spirit of Adventure’s inaugural cruise which departs on 5th November 2020, which may be another option for you to consider.

For now though, you need do no more as my team will be contacting you over the coming days to discuss your options with you.

We will continue to keep you updated, however, in the meantime, please stay safe and again, I would like to thank you for your continued support and understanding over this period.

I am now in a position to advise you that following careful consideration, Spirit of Discovery will return to service on 16th December 2020. Therefore both cruises, Canary Island Flavours, which was due to depart 18th November 2020, and Canary Islands and Casablanca, which was due to depart 2nd December, have now been cancelled.

We will continue to keep you updated, especially as when Spirit of Discovery does return to operation in December, she will do so with a new range of itineraries which I am keen to share with you.

Until then, please stay safe and again, I would like to thank you for your continued support and understanding over this period.

A message for guests booked on Spirit of Adventure cruises Stars of the Canaries (SU006) and Rhythms of the Caribbean (SU007)

Following my previous announcement that Spirit of Adventure’s inaugural cruise will now depart on 5th November 2020, I am now in a position to confirm that sadly both cruises Stars of the Canaries, which was due to depart 1st November, and Rhythms of the Caribbean, which was due to depart on 15th November have now been cancelled.

Update: July 21, 2020

South America: A Grand Voyage

When COVID‑19 hit the travel industry on Friday 13 March, we could never have foreseen what the impact would be for cruising throughout the rest of this year. It has and continues to be a challenge to predict when we will be able to safely operate our ships and as each month has passed, I have endeavoured to keep our guests updated regularly.

With this in mind, we have been looking forward and are starting to revisit our plans for our cruising schedule for 2021 and 2022 whilst closely monitoring the pandemic across the world. As you are more than likely aware, the number of COVID‑19 cases in South America continues to be of concern, especially as they are yet to hit their peak. Therefore, following careful consideration and with the safety and wellbeing of both our guests and crew at the forefront of our minds, we are moving the South American Voyage cruise, in January 2021, forward twelve months to be our first cruise of 2022, the year of Saga Cruising’s 25th anniversary. The cruise will depart on 5th January 2022 and will be for the same duration, visiting the same destinations, but instead will be aboard Spirit of Adventure.

Therefore, with your permission I would like to transfer your booking to the new departure date. At this point, you need do no more as my team will be contacting you over the coming weeks to discuss this further and make the necessary arrangements.

As always, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and understanding during this time and I look forward to welcoming you onboard in the future.

Best wishes and stay safe.

Update: July 20, 2020

Spirit of Adventure

As you know, keeping our guests up to date and informed on news relating to our ships is very important to me. Therefore, I am very pleased to report that very soon, Spirit of Adventure will be floated out of the covered dock to the yard where outfitting will continue throughout August. Whilst you may have seen reports that the yard is closed for six weeks, I can confirm that we have agreed with Meyer Werft that the team currently working on Spirit of Adventure will continue to do so during this time, until completion.

I am looking forward to welcoming you onto Spirit of Adventure in the near future, until that time, please stay safe.

Update: July 14, 2020

Guests booked on Spirit of Discovery cruises in September and October 2020

Further to last week’s announcement around Spirit of Adventure I am now in a position to update you on Spirit of Discovery. Over the coming weeks, my team will be contacting all guests due to travel on Spirit of Discovery during September and October and will be able to discuss fully the options available to you.

Following the updated advice from the FCO regarding cruising, it’s clear that the situation regarding worldwide travel will continue to change and as always, I will endeavour to keep you updated. Over the coming months I will also share with you in more detail our plans to safely return to service and the new processes and procedures onboard we will operate for your safety and that of our crew.

Until that time, please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you aboard our ships later this year.

Update: June 26, 2020

Guests booked on cruises in September, October and November 2020

Firstly, I would like to thank you for your understanding and patience during these unprecedented times. My team are working extremely hard, and we are currently reviewing plans for our Autumn cruises.

While we continue to plan and work through the detail of our return to service, I am pleased to advise that you will not need to pay your balance payment until we contact you over the coming weeks.

I will of course keep you updated on how we are progressing and would like to assure you that the safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew continue to be of the highest importance to me. In the meantime, please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you on board soon.

Update: May 27, 2020

Following my update last month, sadly the situation with COVID‑19 is not improving, therefore I have made the very difficult decision to suspend Spirit of Discovery cruises further until 1st September 2020.

I appreciate that this will be disappointing news for many of you, however the safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew continue to be of the utmost importance to me.

If you were due to travel with us during this time, there is nothing further you need to do as our dedicated guest services team will be contacting you by phone over the coming days to discuss your options in more detail.

However, I would just like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your continued understanding during this unprecedented time, and for the kind words many of you have shared with me over the past few weeks. I sincerely thank you for the support you have shown to both myself and my team. I remain convinced that, when we do return, we will be both stronger and better than before.

Please take care and most importantly stay safe!
