Vitte Hiddensee Mecklenberg-Western Pomerania Germany Europe

31/07/2023 Vitte to Stralsund to Lauterbach

Vitte Harbour, Hiddensee Island

Vitte is the largest of the four villages on the small, peaceful traffic-free island of Hiddensee in the Baltic Sea. The island provides protected habitat for many bird species and opportunities for visitors to enjoy hiking, biking and horseriding. Here, fishing boats once unloaded their catch and the ferries now unload visitors.

Stroll through the village or perhaps join an optional horse-drawn carriage ride around the island this morning.

Later, your ship cruises towards Stralsund, a lively maritime city with a vibrant waterfront. You can join an optional city walk which reveals an old nunnery, the cathedral and market square, or perhaps visit the Ozeanum – part aquarium, part marine biology museum.

Depart Stralsund early this evening and cruise to Lauterbach on the island of Rügen, mooring for the night.

Lauterbach Rügen Mecklenberg-Western Pomerania Germany Europe

01/08/2023 Lauterbach

A verdant cliffside by the sea on Rugen Island

This morning perhaps join an optional tour of Rügen Island, located off the Pomeranian coast in the Baltic Sea and a popular holiday destination.

Thomas Mann and the German Chancellor Bismarck were both fans of Rügen and its seaside resorts of Binz and Sellin. Once the height of sophistication, the resorts with their elegant luxury hotels still retain much of their nostalgic charm. In addition to its 37 miles of fine, sandy beaches, Rügen has a lot to offer, from large national parks to sleepy fishing villages and elegant manor houses.

Set sail again his afternoon and cruise through the afternoon, evening and overnight.

02/08/2023 Szczecin

Arrive in the early hours and after breakfast on board and a morning at leisure you can join an included tour of Szczecin.

Originally the German city of Stettin, this town was effectively the 'port of Berlin' and so suffered heavy Allied bombing during World War Two. Now a Polish city, Szczecin has been rebuilt to recapture some of its original style and appeal, with wide tree-lined avenues and parks, based partly on Haussmann’s 19th-century rebuilding of Paris.

Look out for the decorative Ducal Castle, the Cathedral Basilica of St Jacob the Apostle and the terraces of Waly Chrobrego, providing viewpoints alongside the River Oder. Moor overnight in Szczecin.

05/08/2023 Berlin

Disembark after breakfast and enjoy an included tour of Berlin.

The city of Berlin has one of the most fascinating histories in Europe. Originally a small port on the River Spree, it had developed into the capital of the German Empire by 1871, and the growth of its influence as a cultural centre increased greatly up until its division into Soviet-controlled communist East Germany and capitalist West Germany.

The Berlin Wall was erected to stop East Germans escaping to the West for a better standard of living. With the fall of the wall in 1989, the city was reunified and slowly began to regain some of its former glory, although parts of the wall remain as a reminder of the Soviet era.

Then transfer to a locally rated 4-star hotel in Berlin for a two-night stay with breakfasts and dinners included.

06/08/2023 Berlin

Brandenburg Gate

Spend the day exploring the city independently.

The main sights of Berlin include Checkpoint Charlie, the infamous crossing point of the Berlin Wall, and Brandenburg Gate, formerly a representation of the separation between East and West Berlin. Now, since the fall of the Berlin Wall, this classical structure is perceived as a symbol of unity within the city.

There are numerous palaces across the city, the largest being Charlottenburg Palace, and around 50 museums, housing everything from ancient sculptures and modern art to magic and motorcycles!
