The history of this Moroccan port on the Strait of Gibraltar, just 20 miles from the Spanish coast, goes back to the ancient Greeks and its beginnings are embedded in mythology. It is believed to have taken its name from Tingis, the daughter of Atlas, the mythical supporter of the Heavens. It was later ruled by the Romans and Arabs while Spain, Portugal, France and England also played important parts in the city’s diverse history. The city lies on a bay between two promontories and you can enjoy superb panoramic views if you head up to the ancient Kasbah, a former military fortress now full of elegant buildings and architecture while the Medina – the oldest part of town – is a warren of cobbled streets boasting a chronology of architectural styles charting the city’s colonial history. Perhaps sip a mint tea at a pavement cafe and watch the chaos of everyday life unfold around you.

A dominating fortress built by the powerful Medici family has guarded Portoferraio since the 16th century. The French emperor Napoleon spent a year in exile in Portoferraio and stayed at the Villa of the Mills, which enjoys a prime setting on a promontory overlooking the Ligurian Sea. In contrast, Napolean’s simple summer villa in San Marino features a museum displaying art and antiques from the era. Mount Capanne is the highest point on the island of Elba. Introduction to Tangier - Included Excursion Option 1
Activity Level: Moderate Activity
A choice of included excursions is offered during your visit to this port – please select your place on just one of these excursions. It is not permitted to book more than one option and in doing so will result in the automatic cancellation of additional excursions.
Take an introductory drive with a photo stop at Cap Spartel, a visit to St Andrew’s Church, and an opportunity to sip Moroccan tea.
Leave the pier and travel along the Corniche towards Cap Spartel. This promontory is located at the northernmost point of the African continent and features a lighthouse first lit in 1860 – still overwatching ships passing Tangier’s coast. Pause here for a short photo stop, then head back towards Tangier to visit Saint Andrew’s church.
This Anglican landmark was built on land gifted to Queen Victoria by Sultan Moulay Hassan I in 1883. Blending Moorish and English architecture, its interior is decorated with Arabic script and other biblical texts reflecting Tangier’s multicultural past.
Next, stop at Villa de France, a historic hotel once frequented by artists such as Henri Matisse. Here you will enjoy a traditional Moroccan tea or a fresh orange juice. Afterwards, continue to Marshan Square, to see a different side of Tangier, before returning to your ship.
Additional Information
Please note: There is an essential total walking distance of 600 yards over flat ground. Any further walking at any of the photo stops will be at your discretion. This tour does not visit the centre of Tangier or the medina. If you wish to explore Tangier on foot we recommend booking the alternative tour.

Additional Information
Please note: Expect to walk at least one-and-a-quarter miles. You must be physically fit to participate as the walk through the Kasbah is strenuous and the route may change on the day. Dolphin Watching in the Sado Estuary – Small Group Experience
Seek out dolphins in the crystal-clear waters of the Sado River Estuary, home to exceptional biodiversity.
During this tour you will go in search of one of the estuaries' friendly residents, the Sado Dolphins – otherwise known as Bottlenose Dolphins. After travelling to Setubal by coach, board your boat and sail through the Sado River Estuary and along the coast of the Arrábida mountain range. Along with information on the area’s history and points of interest, your local guide will share facts about the Sado Dolphins as you look for them in their natural habitat.
Enjoy two hours on board the vessel capturing the landscapes and wildlife before returning to Setubal and your onward journey to Lisbon by coach.
Additional Information
Please note: You are required to walk a short distance (no more than 22 yards) from the coach to the boat in Setubal. To enter the boat, you need to negotiate a ramp. There is sufficient outside seating on the boat for all guests on the tour. You will be on the boat for up to two hours, we cannot guarantee toilet facilities on board. Toilet facilities will be available before boarding the boat and after. To use the toilet facilities in a cafe, a purchase may be required. The Bottlenose Dolphins are wild animals in their natural habitat so wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Sesimbra, Azeitão Winery & Arrábida Natural Park
Activity Level: Moderate Activity
Join us to discover the lesser explored area of Lisbon, Arrábida. Leaving the port, your journey by coach takes you over the 25th April bridge and on a scenic drive to Sesimbra, an old fishing village which lies at the foothills of the Serra da Arrábida mountain range.
The village is lined with traditional whitewashed houses, overlooked by Sesimbra’s Moorish Castle. Enjoy an exterior visit of the castle for approximately 30 minutes before the tour continues by coach to Azeitão. Azeitão is located in the nature reserve of the Serra da Arrábida and is known for its tasty regional products.
During your time in the area, you will visit one of the local wine cellars and have the opportunity to taste the Moscatel wines. The tour concludes with a scenic drive through Arrábida Natural park before returning to the ship.
Additional Information
Please note: This tour includes two visits: one to the exterior of Sesimbra Castle, where walking is over uneven ground, but is at your discretion, and the second is to a winery, where 350 yards of essential walking is required over uneven ground with up to 40 steps. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. The order of sights may vary. The drive to Sesimbra Castle will take approximately one hour. The return drive to the ship will take approximately two hours.
Some of the highlights detailed may only be seen on optional excursions or by exploring independently.
Distance from ship to tour vehicles
Local port safety and security measures can result in significant additional walking being required between the ship’s gangway and tour vehicles. This distance depends upon the berth we are assigned on the day and is therefore not included in the excursion walking grade. Should you have any concerns please see the onboard Explore Ashore Team, who will be able to provide up-to-date information.
What are the walking grades?
To help you choose the most suitable excursions we've graded each according to the amount of walking involved.
- Panoramic Activity - A slower-paced excursion with the majority of sightseeing taking place from your vehicle. There may be a short walk at the port to join your vehicle and any other walking will be at your own discretion, for example at photo stops.
- Easy Activity - Up to approximately 500 yards on mainly flat terrain, with the possibility of some steps.
- Moderate Activity - Between 500 yards to one mile over mixed terrain, often with steps. Please refer to individual tour activity descriptions as these tours may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns.
- Strenuous Activity - Considerable walking distances over a mile, usually over uneven terrain with many steps. Generally these tours are aimed at able walkers and may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns.
