Celebrate Spain’s many facets

Valencia is full of wonderful street art that’s easy to mistake for graffiti at first – you can follow these little trails to find different artwork. It’s incredibly fascinating.

If you think you know Spain, be prepared to be surprised on this revelatory cruise exploring its varied shores. Experience its exotic side following medieval streets that wind through the heart of Ceuta on the North African coast. From here you can cross the border with Morocco to visit Tétouan’s UNESCO-listed medina, where traditional craftsmen still work and ply their wares. On the Balearic island of Ibiza, experience a different side to this party capital while wandering around its UNESCO-listed old town and exploring unspoilt countryside perfumed by aromatic pines. On the Spanish mainland, visit a trio of Spain’s oldest ports, Valencia, Almeria and Cadiz. All three feature winding lanes that open on to sun-dappled squares decorated with palms and colourful buildings. In Valencia, don’t miss the opportunity to discover a magical underground realm on a memorable boat ride in the San Jose Caves. Plus, you’ll be able to enjoy entertaining flamenco performances and the enchanting sounds of the Spanish guitar. On board fill your days at sea by making Spanish handicrafts, practising some basic Spanish phrases and joining ORCA on deck for the chance to spot marine wildlife.

Ceuta, Spain

Ceuta, Spain

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

Experience an exotic fusion of Spanish and Moroccan culture in the Iberian enclave of Ceuta, which is perched on a peninsula that juts out from the North African coast. Ceuta’s strategic position has drawn seafarers throughout the ages and it has plenty of fortifications that reflect a rather tumultuous past. Explore the ruins of the city wall and old fort or take the opportunity to visit Tétouan in neighbouring Morocco. Its small but almost perfectly-preserved medina encompasses three distinct sections: Andalusian, Jewish and Berber, earning it a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. After exploring the labyrinthine lanes, enjoy sipping on refreshing mint tea whilst watching a troupe of dancers and musicians perform a mesmerising folkloric show.

Almeria, Spain

Almeria, Spain

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

This easy-going Andalusian city is spread along an attractive costa of the same name and beguiles visitors with its narrow lanes and historic landmarks. Highlights include the crenellated cathedral, neoclassical San Pedro church and impressive hilltop citadel, the second largest Moorish fortress in the region, rivalled only by the world-famous Alhambra Palace in Granada. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy an intimate flamenco performance in a traditional gypsy cave – this lively act can trace its origins back to the Moorish wedding dances of Granada!

Valencia, Spain

Valencia, Spain

Arrive 0800. Depart 2100.

Visitors to Valencia wax lyrical about its trendy Barrio del Carmen district and landmark sights which include the 15th-century silk exchange known as La Lonja, the modernist Central Market and Gothic cathedral – all attractions worthy of your attention. Of special note is Turia Park, one of Spain’s largest urban green spaces, which follows the course of a dried-up riverbed. Alternatively, do more than scratch the surface on a magical boat trip exploring San José Caves which conceal the longest navigable underground river in Europe! You’ll drift through such intriguingly named caverns as Bat Cave, the Dog Kennel and Diana’s Lake, and can study the precarious silhouettes of dangling stalactites and impossibly slow-growing stalagmites en route.

Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza Town, Ibiza

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

Ibiza may be well known for its lively party scene, but away from the rowdy coastal strips you can discover a seemingly unexplored landscape of picturesque coves, high cliffs and pine-scented forests. Then there’s the UNESCO-listed D'Alt Vila, Ibiza's old town which is enclosed by towering medieval walls. Follow the steep winding streets uphill to the cathedral for fantastic views of the harbour. Look forward to a chilled-out sail-away party as Spirit of Discovery bids Ibiza farewell.

Spend the day at sea.

Cadiz, Spain

Cadiz, Spain

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

The ancient seafaring Phoenicians founded Cadiz around 3,000 years ago, and it’s believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited settlement on the Iberian Peninsula. Its cramped lanes lined with subtropical palms and salt-weathered buildings lend it a venerated air best experienced at one of the pavement cafes where you can sit back and watch the ebb and flow of daily life. Take a refreshing stroll along the promenade or seek out the baroque cathedral, neoclassical and Gothic-influenced town hall or Torre Tavira, one of over a hundred watchtowers that once guarded the city.

Spend the day at sea.

Vigo, Spain

Vigo, Spain

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

Set on Spain’s indented Galician coast, Vigo is a city with strong ties to the sea. Enjoy time exploring its narrow streets lined with old fishermen’s houses, visit its vibrant seafood market and admire the neoclassical cathedral. Other attractions include the Castro Fortress, the artistic and literary exhibits of the Galician Cultural Centre and the Leon Municipal Museum. Vigo is also well placed for visiting Santiago de Compostela, famed for its magnificent cathedral at the heart of the UNESCO-listed old town.

Explore Ashore

A Spanish foothold in Africa

Warmed for centuries by the North African sun, the bustling Spanish outpost of Ceuta is hugged by Morocco and exudes medieval ambience at every turn. It offers a compact dose of exotic architecture, excellent food and bracing nature walks you can’t experience elsewhere.

Valencia’s creative side

Food lovers in Valencia will be drawn to the Ruzafa, the city’s hippest district. Our Explore Ashore team can give recommendations on the best tapas bars and restaurants to visit. Afterwards, you may want to peruse some of the independent art galleries and vintage boutiques, or follow the street art trails which add to this barrio’s unique vibe.

Fiery Flamenco

For a real feast for the senses, join a visit to an authentic gypsy family who’ll warmly invite you inside their home, a cave that’s been hollowed out of Almeria’s soft chalk hills! Here you’ll be moved by a spirited performance of traditional Andalusian music and dance coupled with a warming glass of sherry.
