You will also cross the 25th April suspension bridge over the Tagus River to see the imposing statue of Christ the Redeemer. Stretching across the estuary to the Tagus River in Lisbon the suspension bridge is considered as a twin sister of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco because of its similar design. The bridge is an impressive sight, and it also offers a breathtaking view when crossing it. Visible from most parts of Lisbon and beyond, the statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Rei) stands a striking 270 feet high on its angular pedestal, overlooking the south bank of the Tagus River. One of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks standing tall with its robed arms outstretched, it was erected in 1959 and modelled on the famous Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro. Then, enjoy your scenic drive back to the port.

Traditionally a fishing village, Cascais began to rise in prominence in 14th Century when it became a major stopping point for boats on their way to Lisbon. Cascais became a very popular summer resort, driven by the king of Portugal, Dom Luís I, who in 1870, converted the Fortaleza da Cidadela into the summer residence of the Portuguese Monarchy. The Kings example was immediately copied by the nobility, who built palaces and grand villas in the town, where they spent the hottest season of the year, completely transforming the appearance of the former fishing village.
During your free time, we recommend a stroll through the town’s streets, where you can browse the local shops or enjoy a coffee in one of the many outdoor cafes. Cascais also offers the Castro Guimarães Museum, the Boca do Inferno cliffs, the beachfront promenade, the Mercado da Vila market, and the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego art gallery.

Leave the pier and travel by coach to rustic Locronan. Built at the foot of a hill, your guide will show you around this exceptionally picturesque village, which is a member of the select association of 'The Most Beautiful Villages of France'.
Although even today it has only about 800 inhabitants, it was granted Town status by Anne of Brittany in 1505 when she visited Locronan on a pilgrimage to visit the tomb of St Ronan. The village was built mostly between the 14th and 17th centuries, and its harmony of style has attracted many film directors, among them Roman Polanski, who used the village to represent rural Dorset in his film 'Tess', based on the Thomas Hardy novel.
During the Middle Ages, Locronan was a centre for the production of hemp, used in the making of ropes and canvas sails for sailing ships. The hemp was internationally exported from Brittany’s main ports, and its production was tightly controlled by the Office of Cloths: this organisation occupied a building, now used as a bakery, that stands in front of the well at the centre of the village. A few of the old massive honey-coloured wooden looms still survive as reminders of days gone by.

Walking during your free time in Giverny is at your discretion, but you should expect to cover a few hundred yards. Once you leave the gardens, re-entry is not permitted. Photography is not permitted inside the house. The journey to and from Giverny will take approximately two hours each way. No refreshments are included on this tour: you may bring a packed lunch from the ship, or purchase food and drink ashore.
Quaint Etretat
Activity Level: Strenuous Activity
Visit Etretat, the seaside town that provided inspiration for the legendary impressionistic canvasses of Monet and Isabey.
Now a famous resort, Etretat has always had a strong reputation due to the originality of its setting. The grandeur of the high cliffs and crashing waves is unforgettable, whatever the season. It is hardly surprising to learn that the town has inspired many writers, artists and film directors. The city also boasts elegant timber-framed houses, a medieval church and a charming wooden covered marketplace.
After a guided walk, enjoy some free time to discover Etretat at your own pace, and maybe do some shopping in the city centre before driving back to Honfleur.
Additional Information
Please note: There will be a coach drive of approximately one-and-a-quarter hours in each direction. Expect to walk up to two miles in Etretat and negotiate some uneven surfaces and steps. Further walking during your free time is at your discretion. You will have one-and-a-quarter hours of free time. To use the restroom in a cafe a purchase may be required.
Some of the highlights detailed may only be seen on optional excursions or by exploring independently.
Distance from ship to tour vehicles
Local port safety and security measures can result in significant additional walking being required between the ship’s gangway and tour vehicles. This distance depends upon the berth we are assigned on the day and is therefore not included in the excursion walking grade. Should you have any concerns please see the onboard Explore Ashore Team, who will be able to provide up-to-date information.
What are the walking grades?
To help you choose the most suitable excursions we've graded each according to the amount of walking involved.
- Panoramic Activity - A slower-paced excursion with the majority of sightseeing taking place from your vehicle. There may be a short walk at the port to join your vehicle and any other walking will be at your own discretion, for example at photo stops.
- Easy Activity - Up to approximately 500 yards on mainly flat terrain, with the possibility of some steps.
- Moderate Activity - Between 500 yards to one mile over mixed terrain, often with steps. Please refer to individual tour activity descriptions as these tours may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns.
- Strenuous Activity - Considerable walking distances over a mile, usually over uneven terrain with many steps. Generally these tours are aimed at able walkers and may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns.
