Warnemunde

Warnemünde, Germany

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

Warnemünde lies on the Baltic sea, just a short distance from the Hanseatic city of Rostock. Look out for the town’s famous ‘Teepott’ building with its distinctive roof, maybe while enjoying a stroll along the Old Channel canal with its choice of cafes, shops, and old fishermen's’ houses. The artist Edvard Munch – known for his iconic work ‘The Scream’ – lived here for some 18 months and his house is open to the public. Alternatively, pay a visit to the town’s lighthouse or its small museum where you can learn about the local history. Further afield lies the beautiful medieval city of Lubeck – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the 12th century, the city was an important trading port and has a wealth of 15th and 16th-century buildings including its famous gate – the Holstentor. Alternatively, visit the vibrant city of Berlin with its fascinating history and world-famous sites including the Berlin Wall Memorial, the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, the Gendarmenmarkt and more.

Karlskrona, Sweden

Karlskrona ⚓, Sweden

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

Discover the UNESCO World Heritage site city of Karlskrona – a unique naval city founded in 1680 at a time when Sweden was a powerful maritime nation. The city lies on an archipelago of some 1,650 islands and was designed as a comprehensive naval city, taking inspiration from the dockyards of Chatham and Venice. Explore some of Kalskrona’s naval buildings and areas such as the harbour, dockyard, workshops, rope walk, and even a sculptors workshop. The city is also home to the Stortorget – the Great Square – bordered by elegant buildings and churches including the baroque Frederiks Church, the colourful small houses of Bjørkholman once inhabited by dockworkers, green spaces such as the parks of Hoglands and Admiralty Park, as well as shops, galleries and restaurants.

Spend the day at sea.

Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki, Finland

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

Helsinki is sometimes referred to as the ‘green capital’ and with around a third of the city made up of green areas, it’s easy to see why. In addition to parks including the Central Park, and Sibelius Park named after Finland’s famous composer, the city is known for its Art Nouveau architecture. There’s a choice of Museums ranging from the city’s own to the National Museum of Finland, as well as the city’s design district with its boutique shops, design studios and more.

St Petersburg, Russia

St Petersburg, Russia

Arrive 0800 on August 14. Depart 1700 on August 15.

St Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and is home to the famous Hermitage, comprising five buildings including the glittering Winter Palace – home of Russia’s Tsars for 150 years. Renowned for its outstanding art collections made up of over three million objects, the Hermitage boasts opulent interiors, works of art by great masters, and stunning architecture. Your overnight stay in the city brings the opportunity to treat yourself to an exclusive evening at the Hermitage when you can enjoy a private viewing of some of its treasures. But St Petersburg is more than just the Hermitage. It has a wealth of other palaces, as well as museums, parks, monuments and cathedrals to choose from and explore, including the Peterhof Palace. This Versailles-like palace with its formal gardens, beautiful interiors and works of art offers a glimpse into the world of the Tsars. Russia is also renowned for its ballet and St Petersburg is fortunate to have an abundance of theatres. Ballet lovers may like to see a ballet performance of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake in St Petersburg, the very city where the composer lived for some 16 years.

Klaipeda, Lithuania

Klaipeda, Lithuania

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

The city of Klaipeda has a long history reflected in the remains of its 13th century castle. The city is divided by the Dane River and to the south you will find the city’s Old Town area. Here lie fine examples of German timber framed-style architecture – a legacy of the city’s German overlords for over 500 years – bordering cobbled streets. Perhaps visit Theatre Square, the Castle museum, or learn about the history of the Klaipeda region at the Minor History Museum. Beyond the city lies the Curonian Spit – a UNESCO World Heritage site and National Park, accessible via the ferry to Smiltyne. With its impressive dune landscape, the spit is valued as a cultural landscape and for its evidence of the co-existence of man and nature. Alternatively, perhaps join a shore excursion visiting the 17th century church at Kretinga – part of a Franciscan monastery.
