St Petersburg

Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

13th June, 2018

After a smooth 2 days at sea we made our arrival into St Petersburg at 0800 on Tuesday 12th June. Sapphire was last here on the 5th September 2017, so both passengers and crew were all looking forward to our visit.

Sapphire was berthed at the Marine Facade Terminal and the tour coaches were all lined up ready and waiting to take our Passengers and Crew on adventures new……I know St Petersburg will not disappoint.

Most of our passengers were off on a shore excursion either today or this evening, with some even going out on both. This is often the case, as there is so much to see and do here in St Petersburg. The city is full of spectacular buildings, palaces, parks, canals, squares and monuments, to name just a few of Russia’s hidden gems.

I have been lucky enough to visit quite a few places here in St Petersburg, during my time with Saga. The Hermitage & Gold Room, The Enchanting Ballet, The Church of spilled Blood, which personally, I have to say is one of my favourite churches and most definitely the most colourful I have ever come across.

The weather on arrival was overcast but the sun did keep popping out during the day and by late afternoon /early evening, it was here to stay.

Today was “Russia Day”, a public holiday. The streets have been jammed packed with locals enjoying their day off & spending time with friends and family celebrating Russia’s national day.

Day 2

Today we woke up to blue skies and lots of sunshine here in St Petersburg. A stunning day lies ahead.

Just like yesterday, plenty of our passengers were off out on tour again and the tour coaches were once more all lined and waiting to give our passengers another taste of what beautiful St Petersburg has to offer. We had tours taking place to Catherine’s Palace, The Hermitage and The Faberge Museum to name just a few.

All on board was 6.00pm, when we set sail for Kokta, Finland. I think it is fair to say everyone has tried to see and do as much as possible in the last 2 days here in St Petersburg, whilst making everlasting memories of this beautiful city. I’m certain most will have walked away with a Russian Souvenir in hand to remind them of this too.

Saga Sapphire is due to be back here in August and I, along with my fellow crew, am already very much looking forward to it.
