Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

23rd February, 2018

I joined Saga Sapphire in Southampton at less than 24 hours’ notice due to Capt Julian Burgess having to go home for Family reasons. This is my second stint in command of Saga Sapphire and I was excited at the prospect. You may well know me better as the Staff Captain on Saga Pearl II.

The weather for our Departure was fine and we departed Southampton bound for Bilbao at 1800, taking the more scenic Needles route out to the English Channel/Western approaches into reasonably comfortable conditions.

During this passage we had our Welcome Cocktail Party and Dinner, and due to the short notice I had not had time to arrange for my Formal uniform to be transferred from Saga Pearl II. So possibly for the first time ever, a Saga Captain had to introduce his senior staff, make the welcome speech and host the Dinner wearing a lounge suit – but I think I got away with it!!
