Discover Holland and Germany to the backdrop of the music of Gilbert & Sullivan, performed live on board.
Enjoy some of the duo’s most popular works performed live at evening concerts and take the opportunity to sing along to many of your favourites in the company of your host, baritone and opera expert Peter Grevatt plus his guest pianist and singers, who will perform five live sessions.
By day you can explore historic cities and towns along the Rhine. In Amsterdam, enjoy an included excursion before cruising to Düsseldorf for an included tour of the Old Town. Cruise on to Koblenz and perhaps join an optional visit to the Sekt Museum, stop in Boppard for an included walking tour, and visit Andernach. Continue to Cologne, where you’ll see some of the city’s most popular attractions on an included excursion.
A lively farewell concert on board provides the finale to your cruise.
Your host – Peter Grevatt

After studying at King's College London, baritone Peter Grevatt studied voice with Jean Austin Dodson and Derek Hammond-Stroud of the Royal Academy of Music and went on to train with Michael Maurel. Peter has sung with Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence and toured with the British Youth Opera, his professional solo debut as the title character in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro with the London Opera Players. To date, he has some 80 operatic roles and 60 oratorios to his credit. His talent, experience and exuberance are sure to add an extra dimension to your musical holiday.

Itinerary
Spirit of the Rhine

Travel to Amsterdam and embark Spirit of the Rhine. Meet your expert host and fellow passengers.

Depart 1300.
This morning you can join an included cruise along Amsterdam’s iconic canals to the city centre with its historic bridges and gabled houses. See the famous Skinny Bridge, the Montelbaanstoren tower and the Jewish Quarter before heading to a traditional dairy farm on the outskirts of the city to sample locally produced cheese.
After dinner on board, take your seats for an evening of Gilbert & Sullivan favourites from your host and guest musicians.

Arrive 1000. Depart 1800.
Düsseldorf is famed for its Old Town, in the heart of the city. The narrow backstreets are home to the Gothic St Lambertus church with its twisted tower and the Burgplatz (square) features a Schlossturm (palace tower). From here, it's a stone's throw to the Rhine embankment promenade which offers a sweeping view of Düsseldorf's skyline and the Oberkassel Rhine banks.
An included excursion this afternoon explores the city’s attractions. Look forward to an on-board talk about the lives and work of Gilbert & Sullivan.

Arrive Bingen, 1900.
Koblenz, meaning 'merging of the rivers', is situated on the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. At the exact point where the two rivers meet, the Deutsches Eck, there is monument with a huge equestrian statue of Emperor Wilhelm I. Above the town sits the Festung Ehrenbreitstein, a citadel built by the Prussians between 1816 and 1832.
Continue your cruise through the UNESCO-listed Middle Rhine Gorge to the wine town of Bingen. On board the ship tonight enjoy a performance of well-known works from Gilbert & Sullivan.

Arrive Boppard, 1400.
Bingen sits at the gateway to the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley, with its hilltop castles, historic towns and vineyards. Sail through the scenic Middle Rhine Gorge passing the Lorelei Rock en route to Boppard.
The waterfront of this classic Rhineland wine town is overlooked by wooded gorges and vineyards. There are extensive Roman remains, medieval fortifications and half-timbered buildings and you can explore further during an optional walking tour. Enjoy another on-board concert celebrating the best of Gilbert & Sullivan.

Arrive Andernach, 1200. Depart 2100.
Andernach is an attractive town with medieval fortifications. Enjoy another Gilbert & Sullivan performance on board this evening.

Arrive Cologne, 0800. Depart 1900.
Arrive Düsseldorf, 2300.
Founded by the Romans, Cologne has long been an important trading centre. The city's main attraction is the twin-spired Gothic cathedral which dominates the skyline, but there are also baroque palaces, medieval churches and a 16th-century City Hall.
After dinner on board ship join your host and musical guests for a finale concert.
Disembark Spirit of the Rhine and begin your return journey.
