From Budapest to Bucharest

You’ll be swept off your feet by the spectacular scenery on this relaxing cruise. Sailing aboard Filia Rheni II – which is chartered exclusively for Saga customers – your Danube journey takes in Hungary, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania as it wends its way towards the Black Sea. In addition to the stunning scenery, including that of the Iron Gates gorge and the Danube Delta, you’ll have time to explore some fascinating ports of call. And you can look forward to included guided tours of two major European cities – Budapest and also Bucharest, where you’ll stay overnight.

Day 1 UK to Budapest


Fly to Hungary's capital and embark Filia Rheni II. Moor overnight and enjoy a welcome cocktail reception and dinner on board this evening. Your ship remains moored here overnight.

Day 2 Budapest

Hungarian Parliament, Budapest

A city of two halves – Buda and Pest – the Hungarian capital is a cosmopolitan, culture-rich centre. Buda is the older part, with cobbled streets and medieval architecture, while Pest is the administrative and commercial centre characterised by wide avenues and impressive 19th-century public buildings. This morning, you can enjoy an included tour of the vibrant capital that reveals the highlights, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Buda Castle. Set sail this afternoon and cruise through the night.

Day 3 Novi Sad

City Hall, Novi Sad, Serbia

Cruise through the morning and before lunch arrive in the Serbian town where European and Balkan cultures meet.  Perhaps pay a visit to the City Museum within the fortress walls or explore the old town's array of 18th and 19th-century architecture, either independently or on an optional city tour. This evening cruise towards the Iron Gates gorge.

Day 4 Iron Gates

Iron Gates Gorge

Welcome to the dramatic Iron Gate gorge. No doubt you'll want to head out on deck to admire this particularly scenic stretch of the river, as the Danube passes through the Carpathian mountains and the foothills of the Balkans. Plus you can follow proceedings as the ship manoeuvres through two locks by the Djerdap power stations.

Day 5 Rousse

Veliko Tarnovo, Svistov

This morning you arrive in Rousse, the largest port in Bulgaria and often referred to as ‘Little Vienna’. Legend has is that the city takes its name from a female founder named 'Rusa' in honour of her fiery red hair. Perhaps discover the city on an optional walking tour and admire the 19th-century Austro-Hungarian architecture of its beautiful city centre. Also have a look around the Church of the Holy Trinity, Rousse's oldest church, built in 1632. Set off again at lunch time and cruise through the night.

Day 6 Danube Delta

Danube Delta

Enjoy the scenery as you cruise the wildlife-rich Danube Delta. Much of it is a protected reserve, as the meandering river, reed beds and groves of willow, oak and poplar provide sanctuary for over 300 species of bird. You may like to join an optional small boat cruise further into this UNESCO-listed Biosphere Reserve. Some of the species that you may be lucky enough to spy here include pelicans, herons, swans and ducks.

Day 7 Chiciu to Bucharest


Disembark after breakfast and continue by coach to Bucharest. An included tour of this lively city reveals some of its highlights, such as the impressive Palace of the Parliament, Cotroceni Palace where the President of Romania resides, and historic Cretulescu Palace. Lunch is included during your tour. Tonight you’ll stay in the heart of the capital, at the locally rated 5-star Sheraton Bucharest Hotel (4Q), with dinner included.

Please note, for 2018 departures you will stay at the locally rated 5-star Radisson Blu Hotel Bucharest (5Q).

Day 8 UK to Bucharest
