Discover the city of Lisbon on this panoramic sightseeing tour. Leaving the port, drive past the Jerónimos Monastery, built using limestone over a period of 100 years starting in 1501; UNESCO-listed Belém Tower, constructed with the primary objective of protecting the bay; the Monument to the Discoveries; the pink façade of Belém Palace, the official residence of the Portuguese president; the new Coach Museum; Avenida da Liberdade, the most central avenue in Lisbon and a popular shopping district for both tourists and locals; and Edward VII park.

You will also cross the 25th April suspension bridge over the Tagus River to see the imposing statue of Christ the Redeemer. Stretching across the estuary to the Tagus River in Lisbon the suspension bridge is considered as a twin sister of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco because of its similar design. The bridge is an impressive sight, and it also offers a breathtaking view when crossing it. Visible from most parts of Lisbon and beyond, the statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Rei) stands a striking 270 feet high on its angular pedestal, overlooking the south bank of the Tagus River. One of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks standing tall with its robed arms outstretched, it was erected in 1959 and modelled on the famous Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro. Then, enjoy your scenic drive back to the port.

This scenic tour begins by leaving the city behind as you head up the Mirador Sa Foradada, where you can enjoy a panoramic view during a brief photo stop. Then, you travel through pine forest landscapes and almond and olive groves until you arrive in the Spanish village of Valldemossa.

Here, you can choose an optional 30-minute walking tour, or alternatively enjoy free time to explore one of Majorca’s most beautiful villages and take in more vistas over the valley. With mountain backdrops dressed in blankets of greenery and the famous Royal Charterhouse of Valldemossa, you’ll see why this is such a highly loved destination within the Balearic Islands. Finally, a drive up to Bellver Castle will give you the opportunity to photograph the panoramas overlooking Palma and its glistening seafront.

Before returning to your ship, you can also gain insight into the importance of its Gothic architectural style.

Please note: The distance from the coach parking to Valldemossa is 350 yards. If you choose to explore independently in Valldemossa, you will have approximately one hour at leisure. If you choose to join the guide for a 30-minute walking tour, expect to cover a distance of 1100 yards, additional walking during the 30 minutes of free time is at your discretion. The village does have some steep inclines and cobblestone streets. Valldemossa is a popular village and can be busy.

This introductory tour begins with a panoramic drive around Livorno city centre to see the highlights.

Stop at the Cathedral Square, where you will alight the coach for a little time at leisure, or choose to follow your guide for a short introduction. Afterwards, reboard your coach, the tour continues with a drive to the southern part of the city, before reaching the seaside.

Your excursion concludes with a stop at the viewpoint of Mascagni terrace before returning to the port.

Enjoy the scenery and history of Cartagena and its surrounding countryside on a relaxing panoramic coach tour. Your tour begins with a drive to Cabo de Palos lighthouse, which is located on a small peninsula. Construction began on the lighthouse in 1863 and it was first lit on January 31, 1865. The building rises 100 feet above sea level. 

Next, relax as you drive south through the Murcia countryside to Sierra Minera de la Unión. The Romans were the first people to begin extracting minerals from the mines here, and with a landscape that is laced with zinc, iron, lead, and pyrite, you can enjoy some excellent views. Your tour continues to Cartagena, which was founded by the Phoencians in 227 BC and flourished as part of the Roman Empire. During your city tour you will see reminders of Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine and Moorish rule in the architecture. You can also see the Punic wall, The Civil War Museum, or the Navy Museum before you head back to the ship.

You start the tour by heading towards the airfield runway to reach the British/Spanish Frontier. Proceed towards the southernmost point of Gibraltar, Europa Point and the sight of the only Trinity Lighthouse outside Great Britain. Here, alight from your tour vehicle to take some photographs of the views of the busiest shipping lane in the world, the mingling of the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean and two continents. 

Then, head to the Rock of Gibraltar. Drive past Princess Caroline’s Battery to Winston Churchill Avenue for a short stop at the road which crosses the runway of Gibraltar International Airport. Afterwards, head back to the ship.

The duration of this tour is dependent on traffic. Any type of wheelchairs, scooters or foldable walkers are not permitted on the buses. These can be brought to the bus and then stored at the terminal until you return from the tour. At Winston Churchill Avenue, if a plane is landing or taking off, the coach will stop behind the gate.

If you want to take in the sights and absorb the atmosphere of Lisbon at a relaxed pace, finishing with a taste of the local tipple, then this tour is for you.

Lisbon’s vintage trams are among the city’s icons, and this tour includes a ride on one of these historical vehicles. A coach will take you into the heart of the city where you will board a traditional wooden-bodied tram for a scenic one-hour journey through Alfama and Bairro Alto, two of the oldest districts of the city which are characterised by winding alleyways and whitewashed houses with flowers on their balconies.

Following your tram journey, you will visit a local establishment to have a glass of white port accompanied by white chocolate; you can then enjoy a glass of ten-year-old Tawny port with a miniature ‘Pastel de Nata’ cake.

The tour would not be complete without a panoramic coach ride through the city, viewing some of Lisbon’s famous landmarks such as the Monument to the Discoveries, Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, the far end of the Edward VII Park, the Rossio district and St George’s Castle.

Please note: The trams are authentic historical vehicles and are accessed by a steep flight of three steps. There is no commentary during the tram ride, but your guide will describe the journey before you board. The trams are exclusive to Saga passengers. The areas are often inaccessible to cars and buses, however, there is one mode of transport that is well-equipped for this sightseeing exploration – the ‘tuk tuk’.

Drive to the charming town of Sintra, where you can admire many stunning buildings and works of art. The whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its 19th-century romantic architecture.

On arrival you will visit Sintra National Palace, also known as Palácio da Vila, famous for its magnificent painted ceilings. The palace is the only survivor of the country's Royal Halls, dating from the Middle Ages. One of the highlights is its kitchen, complete with huge 110-feet high conical chimneys.

After your visit to the palace, stop for refreshments, and then enjoy free time to explore on your own. The town has retained much of its medieval layout, with labyrinthine streets, flights of steps and arcaded buildings.

On your return journey to the ship you will follow a section of the scenic ocean road, and pass the Belém district with its famous tower.

Please note: During the visit to Sintra Palace there will be one hour of standing and essential walking covering approximately 550 yards. There are approximately 120 steps and a winding staircase inside the palace. Walking during time at leisure is at your discretion, but please note Sintra Town has cobbled streets, steps and inclines. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. Guests must be physically fit to participate on this tour.

The drive to Sintra will take approximately one hour, the return drive to the ship will take one-and-a-half hours. You will have approximately one hour at the Sintra National Palace, followed by one-and-a-half hours of free time.

Uncover the history of Lisbon as you explore the city with a local guide on foot.

Starting from the port your guide will take you into the city to see some of Lisbon’s significant examples of historical architecture and tell you the city’s stories and traditions. The Chiado district is one of the highlights of your walking tour. The several bookstores, cafes and other shops here have barely changed since they were founded more than half a century ago.

As you walk through the city, you'll see the Praça do Comércio, also known as Black Horse Square, and Largo do Carmo, where Quartel do Carmo can be found, before heading down to Rossio, once the liveliest square in the city. Here you can admire the Dona Maria National Theatre, originally built around 1450.

Just off the northeast corner of Rossio sits a small but lively square brimming with history: São Domingos, home to the São Domingos church which is now a National Monument. Enjoy a short stop for a coffee and cake before continuing your walk through Rua da Prata passing by Sé de Lisboa, the 12th-century cathedral of Lisbon.

You will then begin the walk back to the ship via part of the Alfama district, a labyrinth of narrow cobbled alleyways and colourful houses.

Please note: This tour is all on foot and you will be required to walk up to three miles, sometimes over uneven ground, and there may be more than 15 steps to negotiate. Guests should be physically fit to participate and be able to keep up with the group. Toilet facilities will be available in the local cafes and a small purchase may be required. This tour includes a small refreshment which includes a drink and cake. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes.

Join us to discover the lesser explored area of Lisbon, Arrábida.

Leaving the port, your journey by coach takes you over the 25th April bridge and on a scenic drive to Sesimbra, an old fishing village which lies at the foothills of the Serra da Arrábida mountain range. The village is lined with traditional whitewashed houses, overlooked by Sesimbra’s Moorish Castle.

Enjoy an exterior visit of the castle for approximately 30 minutes before the tour continues by coach to Azeitão. Azeitão is located in the nature reserve of the Serra da Arrábida and is known for its tasty regional products. During your time in the area, you will visit one of the local wine cellars and have the opportunity to taste the Moscatel wines.

The tour concludes with a scenic drive through Arrábida Natural park before returning to the ship.

Please note: This tour includes two visits: one to the exterior of Sesimbra Castle, where walking is over uneven ground, but is at your discretion, and the second is to a winery, where 350 yards of essential walking is required over uneven ground with up to 40 steps. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes.

The order of sights may vary. The drive to Sesimbra Castle will take approximately one hour. The return drive to the ship will take approximately two hours. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility.

A visit to Majorca is not complete without including the mysterious Drach Caves on your must-see list. Spread over 2000 metres, they are a natural wonder full of rock formations and home to one of the largest underground lakes in the world. The excursion begins with a coach ride across the island, passing through a handful of villages until you arrive at the Caves of Drach. Upon arrival, you will walk along the lit-up paths where you can fully admire the beauty of these caves before taking a short rowboat trip across the underground lake accompanied by musicians playing classical music. 

After the visit, continue along to Porto Cristo, a village popular with yachts because of its deep harbour. Whilst here, you will have half an hour of free time to enjoy the views from one of the many terraces or take a stroll around the promenade.

This tour involves walking one mile over some cobblestones and uneven surfaces. There are approximately 120 steps each way at the Caves of Drach and surfaces can be slippery in places. The caves are a popular tourist attraction and at times may become crowded. The tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. We recommend that you wear the life jacket provided on the rowboat.

Your tour begins with a shuttle bus journey into Palma City. The walking tour sets off from La Escollera, first passing by the exterior of the cathedral before making your way to St Francesc Church. Whilst at the St Francesc Courtyard, you will have an opportunity to taste some olive oil which Mallorca is renowned for. Next, head to a local market ‘Mercado del Olivar’; a vibrant hub of activity. Here you can independently browse stalls selling a variety of local products from cheese to seafood. 

Afterwards, you will be given an Ensaïmada (traditional Mallorcan pastry) to go. At the end of the tour you can choose to stay in the city to explore independently or walk back to the shuttle pick up point with the guide.

Additional Information

Please note: There is two-and-a-quarter miles of walking on this tour with up to 12 steps during the walk, and up to 50 steps to reach the Cloister of the monastery of St Francesc. The shuttle bus journey will take approximately 15 minutes each way. You will have approximately 40 minutes of free time at Mercado del Olivar, where further walking will be entirely at your discretion.

Travel by coach through Palma city centre, enjoying a short panoramic tour before arriving at Son Reus Railway Station to board the historic Soller Railway. Since 1912, this three-foot gauge electric train has operated a daily service along the 17-mile route between Palma and Soller.

Enjoy a panoramic view of the Majorcan Mountains, orange groves and quaint villages during your 50-minute scenic train journey which negotiates the 1¾ mile Tunnel Major through the Sierra de Alfabia and the Cinq Pons viaduct.

On arrival in Soller, a charming little town set on a hillside, enjoy a short walking tour and the opportunity to explore independently during some free time before returning to the ship by coach.

Additional Information

Please note: This train is not exclusive to Saga guests and the carriage may be shared with other passengers. Depending on railway schedules, the train journey could operate in either direction and you may travel to Soller by coach and return by train or vice versa. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility, the tour involves an uphill walk of approximately 20 minutes to reach the centre of Soller from the coach and there are 28 steps leading to/from the train platform. There is an additional mile of essential walking required during your visit to Soller, the area is also hilly so expect to negotiate inclines. The railway carriages are not modernized, are unable to accommodate wheelchairs and do not have air-conditioning. Station platforms are low and there may be a wide gap between the platform edge and the carriage door. The train ride includes 13 tunnels, some of which are quite long, so may not be suitable for passengers who suffer from claustrophobia.

Your tour starts with a drive along the Maritime Promenade reaching Bellver Castle, one of the most important examples of Gothic civil architecture in Majorca.

Not far from the centre of the city, this castle of “beautiful views” watches over the port and was built by Jaume II at the beginning of the 14th century. It was conceived as a defensive redoubt and royal residence, but it became most famous as a prison, from the middle-ages until the Civil War. Among many others, the enlightenment encyclopaedist, Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, was a prisoner here for six years; only four months after Jovellanos was set free, the young French Physicist François Arago ventured through the castle. Pause here for an external photo stop, before returning to Palma where the coach will drop you off and then you will continue on foot to the cathedral, constructed between the 13th and 14th century, it is one of the finest Gothic examples of architecture on the continent. 

Next to it stands the Almudaina Palace, a monument which was converted from an Arab fortress into the residence for the Kings of Majorca. During your walking tour, your guide will point out the most important aspects of this monument from the outside. Continue your walking tour through Old Palma before your return transfer to the ship.

Your day starts with a scenic drive passing by Palma’s Bay. Along the seaside, see the Yacht Marina with hundreds of boats and ships of all sizes and shapes, while a nonstop flow of bikers, runners and walkers travelling up and down the promenade. You will also see the sparkling life of this part of the city, with plenty of restaurants, pubs, hotels and shops. The route then takes you behind Palma to go deeper inside the island. When reaching the rural countryside, you’ll make a stop at the Ramanya winery. Here, you will learn about the history of the facilities and the details of the wine cellar processes. 

Then follow this up by enjoying a tasting of some of the region’s distinguished wines paired with local tapas. At the end of the day, return to the coach for a scenic drive back to the pier.

Please note: There is one-and-a-half miles of walking over uneven ground including 15 steps at the winery and extended periods of standing. The wine tasting will consist of four different wines with the following light tapas: local almonds, Majorcan bread with olive oil and cheese, and Majorcan biscuit with local sausage. The marina area is currently undergoing refurbishments which may impact the route taken and views available on the day.

Discover Lucca on foot, one of the most picturesque towns in Tuscany. The present town has evolved since Etruscan and Roman times: the oval Piazza Anfiteatro stands on the site of the original Roman amphitheatre, the structure of which has been incorporated into the surrounding medieval buildings. From 1325 until the early 19th century, Lucca was an independent republic and enjoyed long periods of peace and prosperity. Its massive ramparts are in an almost perfect state of preservation, as they were never put to the test.

Your guided walk will show you the main sights of this intriguing city, including the Basilica of San Frediano, which has a brilliant 13th-century mosaic of Christ in Majesty and a font carved with Romanesque scenes of Moses, the Good Shepherd and Apostles. Passing the remains of the amphitheatre, your walk continues to the Cathedral of San Martino, one of the finest examples of the Pisan Romanesque style in Italy. At the end of your walking tour, you have some time at leisure to walk along the main street, Via Fillungo. Nowadays a lively street lined with elegant shops, this was the ancient Cardo Maximus of the Roman city.

Please note: Lucca is an ancient town with cobbled streets, and participants on this excursion should expect to walk for approximately one mile over uneven ground with occasional steps. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility. The drive from Livorno to Lucca takes approximately 45 minutes.

Discover Renaissance Florence on a walking tour that highlights some of the city’s most celebrated sights and architecture. Your first stop is at the famous Duomo, dominating the city with its orange dome, built by Filippo Brunelleschi between 1420 and 1436. The cathedral is the largest building in Florence, containing colourful 16th-century frescoes by Vasari and intricate marble paving. Admire the Baptistery with its ‘Gate of Paradise’ - a door with ten bronze relief panels depicting Biblical stories - before continuing across Signoria Square. Walk past the Uffizi and reach the Palazzo Borghese, stopping for an included two-course lunch served with a glass of wine. 

Afterwards, your guide will take you to the nearby Gothic church of Santa Croce and point out the details of its exterior. You then have some free time to look around the city at your own pace, taking in more of its sights or going shopping, before returning to your coach for the drive back to Livorno.

Please note: The walking tour will last approximately two hours, with a mile-and-a-half of essential walking over cobbled, uneven streets, with extensive and prolonged standing. Further walking during an hour of free time will be at your discretion. Dietary requests must be advised to the Explore Ashore Manager on board your ship at least 72 hours prior to arrival. The drive from the ship to Florence takes approximately one-and-a-half hours each way. Florence is pedestrianised and can become very crowded. The coach will stop, drop you off and pick you up approximately one mile from the centre of Florence. From the coach drop off point, you will make your way to the centre of Florence on foot to begin the walking tour, you will then make the same journey on foot to return to the coach pick up location. The total walking distance for this excursion is approximately three-and-a-half miles.

Discover the charm of the Tuscan countryside on a visit to the Vialto farmhouse. Upon arrival at the farmhouse, board a traditional horse and carriage which will take you on a tour of the property – revealing olive trees, vineyards and a well-cared-for farmhouse.

Then, there’s time to meet the owner and his proud family who will likely be carrying out their everyday activities that contribute towards the running of the farm. After learning more about their roles and life on the land, sit down and indulge your taste buds with a traditional lunch, including freshly baked Focaccia bread, meats and cheese.

Please note: Although minimal walking is required on this tour, expect to walk 250 yards over flat terrain. You will need to be able to board the carriage unassisted, which involves at least one steep access step. Example lunch menu – Tuscan appetisers, pasta and dessert. Depart the pier and travel by coach to Pisa. On arrival, board your trolley train for an easy tour of the city. Drive past sights, discovering this famous Marine Republic, while your guide recounts some of its rich history. Once at The Field of Miracles, the main Pisa square, admire its splendour and listen to the stories of this world-famous place. You will then have some time for photos before retracing your way by trolley train, to the coach parking area for your return drive to Livorno.

Additional Information

There will be a short walk to and from the trolley train to the coach park. There will be a steep step to board and disembark the trolley train and the ride may be bumpy. Walking at any photo stop is at your discretion. The coach journey to and from Pisa will take approximately 45 minutes. No entrances are included.

Enjoy this half-day excursion to explore Livorno, a city that owes much of its prosperity to its extensive network of waterways. A 15-minute transfer takes you from the cruise port to the Medicean old port.

Here, you are invited to step aboard a local boat which will take you through the city’s most colourful district, known by locals as ‘New Venice’. Sights to be seen during your boat tour include New Fortress, Republic Square, Santa Caterina Church, Old Fortress and the Fisherman Harbour.

After taking a short walk to the centre of the city, you can choose to join your guide on a short optional walking tour, or have some time at leisure to relax or explore independently before returning to your ship.

Additional Information

There is up to approximately 650 yards of essential walking during this tour from the pier to the city centre. There will be additional walking if you choose to join the optional walking tour with the guide, further walking during free time is at your discretion. There will be several steps to negotiate when embarking and disembarking the boat, which you must be able to do unaided. The boat has seating available outside only and there are approximately five steps to reach the seats. The boat used is exclusive to Saga guests. A comfort stop is not available on this tour.

Trace Rome’s fascinating past on this coach-based tour encompassing some of the city’s most impressive sights. Your drive will first take you past the Baths of Caracalla and the site of the Circus Maximus. Take in the view from the Palatine Hill, where the Roman Emperors had their palaces, and then drive on past the well-preserved circular Temple of Hercules and the nearby Temple of Portunus.

From the coach you can then see the spectacular Colosseum, a vast amphitheatre thought to have been built between 75 and 80AD. The coach will drop you off and you will walk to a local cafe/restaurant for refreshments. The final sight before heading back the ship will be the St Angel Castle, a vast fortress built as a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian, which was converted into a castle in the sixth century.

Please note: The drive to and from Rome usually takes between one-and-a-half and two hours, depending on traffic. Photographs have to be taken from your tour vehicle when moving, as the coach is unable to stop in the centre of Rome. Sights from the coach include: Baths of Caracalla, Circus Maximus, Temples of Hercules and Portunus, Colosseum, St Angel Castle. Due to recent traffic restrictions, this tour does not pass St Peter’s square. To reach the refreshment venue, there is an essential walking distance of approximately 550 yards and up to 10 steps. Depart from Civitavecchia to discover the monuments that gave Rome its nickname, the 'Eternal City'. On arrival to Roma, you will begin with a panoramic drive past the Circus Maximus, the Aventine Hill and the Roman Forum, the centre of everyday life 2,000 years ago.

From here a short drive will bring you near to the city centre, where the coach will drop you off. Begin your walking tour along some of Rome’s charming streets. Enjoy the unique atmosphere as you head to the iconic Trevi Fountain: admire Nicola Salvi’s sculptures and maybe toss a coin into its waters.

Continue along the Via del Corso for an exterior view of the best-preserved Roman temple, the Pantheon, rebuilt around 120AD and converted to a church 500 years later. Its huge masonry dome is 142 feet in diameter, and 16 solid granite columns support the impressive portico. From here, stroll to Piazza Navona, with its magnificent Fountain of the Four Rivers. Then, head to the pick up point to re-board the coach for a short drive to a nearby restaurant for a light lunch.

Afterwards, return by coach to Civitavecchia.

Depart from the pier and enjoy a drive through the Etruscan countryside to Marta, on the southern shore of Lake Bolsena. This small fishing village is characterized by its narrow streets and dominated by an impressive clock tower. You can explore your surroundings during a short walking tour, followed by some free time.

Afterwards, continue to Montefiascone, a town that is home to the well-established Antica Cantina Leonardi winery. Here, you can sample three of the local wines, accompanied by other local products, before returning to your ship.

Leave Civitavecchia by coach and head inland to Castel Gandolfo, the Pope’s traditional summer residence. This 135-acre estate, 20 miles from Rome, has been in papal hands since 1596, and Pope Urban VIII had the present villa and gardens laid out in the 17th century.

Arriving at Castel Gandolfo, you will leave your coach and board an eco-friendly vehicle for a guided ride of the Pope’s Estate, where you will be able to admire Italian Gardens. You will then have some free time to explore Castel Gandolfo. The quaint village is perched on a hill and offers a panormic view over Lake Albano, which occupies an old volcanic crater and is the deepest lake in Italy.

Then, re-board your coach for the return drive to Civitavecchia.

The coach journey between Civitavecchia and Castel Gandolfo takes approximately two hours each way, with a comfort stop en route. You should expect to walk at least one mile, partly uphill and over cobblestones, with about 50 steps to negotiate: regrettably there is no wheelchair access. This tour will be split into two groups at the gardens if necessary. You will have approximately two hours of free time at Castel Gandolfo, where walking is at your discretion. Shoulders and knees must be covered during your visit to Castel Gandolfo. The Pontifical Villas are still used by the Pope therefore they may close at any given time without previous notice.

Depart from the pier and head to Tarquinia, a city known for its Old Town with quaint squares and palaces.

During the drive you will pass by the Etruscan Necropolis where the ancient Etruscan city once stood. In 2004, the Etruscan Necropolises of Cerveteri and Tarquinia were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With good reason. The site provides an insight into the only urban civilization in pre-Roman Italy. Approximately 200 tombs have been excavated, but it is believed the surrounding fields contain hundreds more that remain untouched.

After passing the site on board your coach, you will visit Tarquinia old town centre, here you board a modern road ‘Dotto’ train, which will take you through Tarquinia’s old medieval centre. Your time here will reveal pretty squares and soaring towers. Disembark the trolley train and head to a local gelateria for an Italian ice cream. Then, return by coach to your ship.

Leave the pier and travel north from Civitavecchia through the scenic Etruscan countryside towards Tuscania.

Set atop a rocky hill with views across the Maremma region, this ancient village dates to the 9th century BC. Although an earthquake damaged parts of the village in 1971, Tuscania’s Etruscan and Renaissance buildings have been carefully restored, preserving the town’s rich historical character. Enjoy a short walking tour with your guide through the narrow cobblestone streets of this charming village.

You will then head to a vantage point offering a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys. Afterwards, reboard the coach and travel to a local farmhouse that produces a variety of products including olive oil. While here, you will learn about the history of olive oil production and enjoy olive oil tasting, accompanied by bruschetta. Then, rejoin the coach for the return drive to the ship.

Depart from the pier and head to the ancient hillside town of Bracciano, located in the Lazio region of Italy. This spot is best known for the Orsini-Odescalchi Castle overlooking the town and lake.

Built in the 15th century by the powerful Orsini family, Odescalchi Castle (officially Castello Orsini-Odescalchi) stands as a popular example of Renaissance architecture. It later passed to the Odescalchi family, who still own and carefully preserve it today. The castle is a blend of military architecture and aristocratic elegance and is a sought-after venue for high-profile events and weddings – most famously, the wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in 2006.

Enjoy a guided tour of the castle before some free time in Bracciano town. Afterwards, meet up with your guide for the return walk to the coach pick up point and the return drive to the ship in Civitavecchia.

After tendering ashore, a short minibus shuttle transfer will take you to the upper terrace of Sorrento, where you will board the coach for the one-and-a-half hour drive to historical Pompeii. Around noon on August 24, 79 CE, a massive eruption from Mount Vesuvius unleashed volcanic debris over the city of Pompeii. Buildings were destroyed, and the city was buried under a thick layer of ash and pumice.

For centuries, Pompeii remained hidden beneath this blanket, preserving its remains in incredible detail. After being buried for 1,700 years, the town has been resurrected, revealing a vivid snapshot of ancient daily life. See the temples, porticos, law courts, and the bustling agora, once filled with crowds. View the remains of private homes still showcasing mosaic floors and vibrant frescoes. You will also have the opportunity to view the poignant casts of bodies, preserved by volcanic ash as they were tragically caught in the eruption, offering a powerful glimpse into the lives of those who lived in Pompeii.

Afterwards, reboard the coach for the return drive along the peninsula to Sorrento; here take the minibus shuttle back to the pier.

This Roman town was once a bustling port and seaside resort. Smaller than Pompeii, the town befell the same fate in AD 79, but was covered by a thick layer of mud, rather than lava. As a result, not only the buildings but also delicate items like clothes and furniture survived. The ancient site was rediscovered in the eighteenth century when well-diggers uncovered the theatre in 1738, marking the start of modern archaeology.

Afterwards, reboard the coach for the return drive to Sorrento, here take the minibus shuttle back to the pier.

After tendering ashore, board your minibus for a scenic drive along the Amalfi Coast to the historic town of Amalfi. While the town has been known since the fourth century, it flourished in the mid-sixth century under Byzantine rule. By the ninth century, Amalfi had risen to become one of Italy’s first maritime republics, rivaling the great naval powers of Pisa, Genoa, Venice, and Gaeta in trade with the East. Today, Amalfi is one of the most popular tourist resorts in Italy, noted for its coastal scenery with high cliffs and picturesque hillside houses.

On arrival, take a short stroll with your guide to the main square to see the exterior of the 12th-century cathedral. You will then have time at leisure to explore Amalfi’s cobbled streets, perhaps head to a cafe or restaurant for a bite to eat or head to a souvenir shop. After your visit to Amalfi, board a motorboat and cruise along the Amalfi coast to Salerno. On arrival, disembark the boat and transfer to the minibus for the drive to Sorrento.

In Amalfi Town, there is no suitable parking, vehicles can only drop off, without the possibility to return and pick up again. On weekends, vehicles are also only permitted to drive one way from Sorrento to Amalfi, for this reason, to return to the ship, a local motorboat will be used to reach Salerno where a minibus will then take you back to the ship in Sorrento. The stop in Salerno is to transfer from motorboat to minibus only. The drive to Amalfi will take approximately one hour and 45 minutes. The boat journey from Amalfi to Salerno will take approximately one hour. The drive from Salerno to Sorrento will take approximately one hour and 45 minutes.

After tendering ashore, board a high-speed ferry for the 45-minute journey to Positano. Once a small fishing village, Positano has grown into one of the Amalfi Coast’s most celebrated destinations. Built vertically into the cliffs, it became a favourite among writers and artists in the 1950s. Today, this picturesque resort town has a network of stairways and pastel-coloured houses set among vibrant flowers.

On arrival following a brief introduction by your guide, you will have time at leisure to explore on your own. Perhaps browse the designer boutiques or souvenir shops or settle down in a cafe to watch the world go by. At the appointed time, rejoin your guide and proceed to the ferry for your return journey to Sorrento.

Please note: The transfer to and from Positano will be by high-speed ferry, the ferry crossing will take approximately 45 minutes each way. There will be three steps to board the ferry. A guide will join you for the ferry journey however your time in Positano is unguided. You will have approximately three-and-a-half hours of free time in Positano to explore independently, walking is at your discretion however we have graded this tour based on the terrain, which will be uneven with very steep inclines to negotiate. There are 20 steps to negotiate to visit the main centre. Positano is a very popular destination and will be busy, the town is also pedestrianised and has many steps.

After tendering ashore, a short minibus journey will take you to the upper terrace of Sorrento, where you will board the coach for a panoramic drive, take in the vistas of the Sorrento hills and coast with an opportunity for a photo stop to take pictures of Sorrento’s Bay. You will then head to a local Casale to taste some Italian wines paired with Neapolitan snacks. The wines are crafted from 100% pure grape juice, while the food features vegetables from the Casale’s organic garden, D.O.P. Depart from the pier and head to Calangianus, famous for the production and export of cork. Here, you will visit a cork factory before continuing to Tempio Pausania - the ancient capital of the historic region of Gallura. Admire the austere, elegant architecture of its buildings, mostly constructed in granite.

After some free time to explore, board the coach, and proceed towards Aggius, where you will have the opportunity to take photos of the rocky landscape. Then, continue to the Moon Valley, which features a lunar-like landscape composed of erratic boulders of granite eroded by the wind. Pause here for a short photo stop, where you can make out the shapes of animals and people within the boulders and interpret the rocks in all sorts of ways.

Then, reboard your coach for the return drive to your ship in Olbia.

Depart from the pier and head along a coastal road and/or a road crossing the country to admire the Sardinian landscape. The winding roads will lead you through San Pantaleo, a village nestled within a rocky landscape.

The drive continues to Cannigione, originally a fishing village and now a seaside resort. Pause here for a short photo stop, and to admire the sandy shore and cobalt ocean next to the town’s centre, which is made up of a series of pastel-coloured buildings.

After a short stop in Cannigione, you will then start returning to Olbia - crossing the famous area of Costa Esmeralda.

Leave Olbia and head to the archaeological site situated in the Arzachena area. This tour takes you on a journey to discover Nuragic civilisation, with a stop at the Nuraghe La Prisgiona, a unique Nuragic setting in Gallura and the jewel in the crown of the region’s historic heritage.

Considered one of the oldest in Europe, the Nuragic civilisation began from the meeting of different Mediterranean people and the gradual evolution of pre-existing cultures that had spread across Sardinia since the Neolithic period. The civilisation takes its name from the imposing megalithic constructions called Nuraghi, a term that is believed to derive from the pre-Latin word ‘Nur’ meaning “heap of stones, hollow heap”.

After your visit, the tour continues with a short drive to Cannigione, a well-known seaside resort in a central location near the tourist villages and beaches of the Emerald Coast. After a short stop, reboard the coach for the return drive to the ship.

Depart Cartagena by coach for a journey through the foothills of the Sierra Carrascoy. Your destination is the city of Murcia, capital of the province of the same name. Settled by the Moors in the ninth century and conquered by the Christians in the 13th, this bustling city offers an array of architectural delights. Your first stop is the Monastery of the Virgin of Fuensanta, the Patroness of Murcia. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Murcian orchards. Continuing to the city, there is a stop to visit the cathedral in the main square. Next to the cathedral, you can view the exterior of the Bishop’s Palace. 

After, continue to another of Murcia’s historic buildings, the Royal Casino. Located in the city centre, not far from the cathedral, the casino dates from 1847 and is in a mix of different architectural styles, with interiors modelled on Roman and Moorish buildings. Declared a National Historic Building in 1983, it was completely refurbished between 2006 and 2009, when all the original decorative features were restored. 

Leaving the casino, pass through the squares of Santo Domingo and Romea. There is also some free time for a stroll on your own before returning by coach to Cartagena.

Discover the highlights of Cartagena, originally settled in 223 BC. The city has flourished under Roman, Muslim and Arab rule, and today offers a vast cultural legacy. Your walking tour begins at the pier. Walk along the sea wall to reach the Town Hall Square and the main avenue, admiring interesting modernist buildings from the beginning of the 20th century.

You then continue to the Roman Theatre, the most important archaeological site in the region. The theatre is in the heart of Cartagena but was lost for more than 1,500 years: it dates back some 2,000 years to the heyday of Cartagena's period as an important Roman city. Built on one of the highest hills in the city, its tiered rows of seats were dug out of the rock so that 6,000 spectators had a view of the stage.

After seeing the theatre, you have the choice of returning to your ship with your guide or staying in the town centre to explore on your own.

In Spanish culture, horses are hugely important – not only historically for work, but for entertainment too. Great steeds entertain crowds of people who enjoy the graceful movement of such a powerful animal. Ideal for equine enthusiasts, this tour offers an up-close experience with some well-kept and trained Spanish horses, much sought after throughout the world.

Enjoy a short panoramic drive out of Cartagena and arrive at this hacienda – an open space – where horses are trained. Here, admire and even touch the brood mares and foals, learn the art of horse training and how to manage stallions before your horse show begins, featuring an Andalucian dancer.

This visit to the Jumilla wine region offers you the opportunity to learn the history and characteristics of different Jumilla wines. Jumilla has had an important wine-making tradition for centuries and today is recognised as one of Spain’s most promising wine regions. Located to the northwest of the capital city of Murcia, the area is made up of wide valleys separated by a chain of mountains.

Leave the port and travel by coach to Jumilla. Your first visit will be at the BSI Winery, which was the first producer of wines in the region. Learn about their history and methods and enjoy a tasting of two of their wines. The tour then continues to Viña Elena, one of the oldest family-run bodegas in the region. Originally known as Bodegas Pachecho, the bodega will give you a chance to take a step back in time and witness the evolution that has made the business it is today. Here, you will taste three of their wines and a light snack before returning to Cartagena by coach.

Please note: The drive to and from Jumilla is approximately one-and-a-half hours each way. There is up to one mile of essential walking over some uneven surfaces. We recommend that you wear flat walking footwear. This tour has limited capacity.

Stroll around the Alameda Gardens before capturing views of The Gibraltar Rock on a scenic cable car ride. This tour will also take you to delight in the collection of plants at Alameda Gardens, which are an important conservation project. 

First, join your guide who will point out the various plants, sights and wildlife whilst also describing its rich history as you wander around the grounds. Gibraltar’s cable car is the territory’s only purpose-built tourist attraction, and you then have the chance to ride up to the very top of the Rock. Enjoy free time to wander around the many terraces and capture the views of the city of Gibraltar to the west and the coastline of Africa to the south. 

After your tour, a shuttle service will take you straight back to the ship, or you may prefer to be dropped off in the Irish town pedestrian area to explore the many shops. Alternatively, relax in a pub or cafe, before making your own way back to the ship.

Please note: There is approximately one mile of walking. This excursion operates by mini-bus, cable car and on foot. At the entrance to the gardens there are 48 steps to negotiate. Once you are in the garden grounds, the paths are generally paved with some steep gradients, some areas may be uneven and there will be approximately 25 steps to negotiate throughout the gardens. Please expect queues and crowds at the cable car and be aware that the cable car may not operate during harsh weather conditions which can also affect the views you will see. Passengers are reminded that Gibraltar’s apes may be encountered on this excursion and should not be touched or fed as they may bite. Dependent on the time of year when visiting the Alameda Gardens, different plants will be flowering.

Learn about Gibraltar's unique wartime history on this tour. Begin by travelling past the British/Spanish Land Frontier. Your first stop is Europa Point, site of the only Trinity Lighthouse outside Britain, where you can savour dramatic views of the Atlantic merging with the Mediterranean.

Next you will be taken to the nature reserve, home of the Northern Defences Sector, where you might be able to catch a glimpse of Gibraltar’s most famous residents, the mischievous Barbary apes. Continue to the Hays Level where you begin a guided tour and visit the exhibition which displays a collection of photographs illustrating the history of the World War Two tunnels.

Please note: This tour involves walking of up to approximately three-quarters-of-a-mile lasting around 45 minutes with a steep incline of 450 yards on the way out of the tunnels. There are some low ceilings in the tunnels.

Go in search of dolphins and other marine life on this aquatic-creature based boat trip. Gibraltar’s bay boasts three species of dolphin and seven species of whale, as well as sunfish, flying fish and turtles. After departing from your ship, take the short drive to the ‘Dolphin World’ pleasure cruiser.

Then, after setting off into the bay, learn about the history of this tiny colony, and you will be given an insight into the marine life of the bay with a running commentary from your guide. After landing, return transport will be available back to the ship, or if there’s enough time, you can choose to walk into town for shopping and a little independent exploration.

Please note: We recommend that you take some warm clothing for the boat ride. This excursion involves approximately 300 yards of walking to reach the vessel and a couple of steps to board the vessel unassisted. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, and refreshments can be purchased on board if you wish. The boat is not exclusive to saga guests.

From the quayside, travel north towards Gibraltar’s unique airport runway to the border between this small British Overseas territory and Spain. Proceed along the outskirts of town, passing the American War Memorial and The Trafalgar Cemetery to arrive at Europa Point.

After a panoramic tour, you will be dropped off in front of the Bristol Hotel in Main Street, where you will be greeted by the Distillery Manager who will walk you to the venue. The tour begins with a brief history of the Art of Distilling, plus an insight into gin production before a comprehensive timeline of gin’s chequered past. Enjoy a gin tasting experience, before returning to the port.

Any type of wheelchairs, scooters or foldable walkers are not permitted on the buses. These can be brought to the bus and then stored at the terminal until you return from the tour.

Leave the port and drive towards the airport to reach the British/Spanish Frontier. Then proceed towards the southernmost point of Gibraltar, Europa Point and the sight of the only Trinity Lighthouse outside Great Britain. Pause here at the vantage point to take in the view.

From here, you head to the upper Rock area and to St Michael’s Cave, where you can wonder at the mass of stalagmites and stalactites. The cave recently underwent a £2 million investment and now features a state of the art ‘light and sound’ experience called ‘the awakening’.

Your coach then takes you to King Charles V Wall where you may see the famous Barbary apes. Then, head back to your ship.

Please note: Expect to walk 350 yards on this excursion. At Europa Point the ground will be flat with up to three steps. The are 75 steps to negotiate at St Michael's Cave. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are recommended as some areas of the cave can be slippery. This tour is not suitable for those with limited mobility, we have graded this excursion as moderate due to the number of steps you will need to negotiate inside the caves. Lighting in the cave is dim and coloured for effect.
