Set on low hills, St Peter Port has a quaint collection of wooden-fronted shops and boutiques which are great for a spot of window shopping.
Highlights include the town church, which was completed in 1466, and hilltop Candie Gardens which offer excellent coastal views. Listen out for the Noon Day Gun fired daily from 13th-century Castle Cornet, set on an island in the harbour.

Falmouth

Falmouth is a thriving port town, well-known for its rich maritime heritage and converted into a seaport at the request of Sir Walter Raleigh. Positioned on the Cornish coast at the Fal Estuary, today the town is the start and finish line for many record-breaking sea voyages including those of Dame Ellen MacArthur and Robin Knox-Johnston.

The city, which is yours to discover on an included panoramic excursion, also boasts a rich seafaring history and it was here that the ill-fated RMS Titanic was built.

Liverpool.

Liverpool evolved during the Industrial Revolution as a nexus for trade, as reflected in the historic centre and the restored Royal Albert Dockyards. It is also a city synonymous with the cultural revolution of the 1960s.
On the waterfront, visitors are greeted by the iconic ‘Three Graces’, which includes the Royal Liver Building. Other notable attractions include neo-classical St George’s Hall, the Tate Liverpool and Walker Art Gallery and such fine parks as 200-acre Sefton Park with its Victorian palm house.

Holyhead, Wales.

Situated off the north-west coast of Wales, close to the Snowdonia Mountain range, lies the Isle of Anglesey which boasts a wealth of history including a long and ancient Celtic past. During the Middle Ages, the island was known as ‘Mam Cymru’ or ‘Mother of Wales’, thanks to its lush, fertile fields. Historic Beaumaris on the east side of the island is the site of the last royal stronghold built by Edward I.

Fishguard ⚓, Wales.

Fishguard is surrounded by the rolling meadows of the Pembrokeshire National Park. On a small head overlooking sweeping Cardigan Bay are the ruins of an old fort from the Napoleonic era.
In 1797, the garrison fired blanks at the approaching French fleet, forcing them to land further along the coast. The failed invasion is illustrated on a tapestry displayed at the Fishguard Library. The town was the setting for the 1971 film Under Milk Wood, with locals acting as extras alongside movie stars Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole.

Exotic Tresco Gardens - Included Excursion

A choice between two included excursions is offered during your visit to the Isles of Scilly – please select your place on just one of these excursions.
Step on board a local tender boat operated by the St Mary’s Boatmen’s Association to visit the spectacular Tresco Abbey Gardens. Arrive ashore and walk to the gardens, where you will be free to explore at your own pace. The gardens are home to an astounding 20,000 exotic plants from 80 countries as diverse as Brazil, South Africa and New Zealand. Many species would not withstand the climate on the Cornish mainland, less than 30 miles away, yet even at the winter equinox, more than 300 plants can be found in flower here. It was Augustus Smith who first built the walled enclosures around the Priory ruins, erecting tall windbreaks to protect the three terraces he carved from the rocky, south-facing slope looking towards St Mary’s. He was a wealthy merchant banker who purchased the islands from the Duchy of Cornwall in the 1830s. Work on the gardens commenced in 1834, incorporating the ruined walls of the old Benedictine Priory. Today the lush paths which criss-cross the gardens are fringed by cacti, date palms, giant red flame trees, rarities like lobster claw, great white spires of echia, brilliant furcraea, strelitzia and eye-catching pink drifts of pelargonium. Specialist guides will be on hand to answer any questions whilst you enjoy the gardens.

Please Note: A choice between two included excursions is offered during your visit to the Isles of Scilly – please select your place on just one of these excursions. Local tender boats will take you between the ship and Tresco. Getting on and off these boats often involves a steep step. The boats are uncovered and have basic bench-style seating. The times and duration of this excursion may change depending on tides and the local boat schedule. Please attend the destination presentation on board your ship for further details. Walking between 600 and 1500 yards is required from the quayside to the garden. However, a limited shuttle service will be available for those who require it. There will be up to one mile of optional walking at the gardens, and you will encounter some uneven surfaces, gradients and steps.
Scilly Isles Sea Safari - Included Excursion

A choice between two included excursions is offered during your visit to the Isles of Scilly – Please book either the Exotic Tresco Gardens visit or the Scilly Sea Safari. It is not possible to join both of these excursions. From your ship, step on board a local boat operated by the St Mary’s Boatmen’s Association. Embark on a boat tour of the coastal scenery of the Scilly Isles and marvel at the wildlife these waters boast. Your adventure starts as you cruise around the islands, fringed by sandy beaches and lush greenery. The Scillies are a stopover place for many migrating birds in spring and autumn and a wildlife paradise year round. Your sea safari will take you to a seal colony, where you have the chance to observe these blubbering creatures. Throughout the tour, keep your eyes peeled for other wildlife, such as puffins, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, dolphins and basking sharks. Throughout, your knowledgeable skipper will point out any sightings and share their broad knowledge with you before heading back to shore.

A choice between two included excursions is offered during your visit to the Isles of Scilly – please select your place on just one of these excursions. This excursion will take place on an open-air boat with very little or no under-cover seating. Binoculars are recommended and not provided. This excursion does not involve walking, but a good level of mobility is required to embark and move around on the boat. There are no restroom facilities on the boat. The route taken on the day will depend on sea conditions and tides; wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Belfast City Highlights - Included Excursion
Walking difficulty: Panoramic tour
Northern Ireland’s cultural capital, Belfast, is a haven for literature, art, music and theatre. The city also has a rich seafaring history and it was here that the RMS Titanic was built. This panoramic tour provides an introduction to the city with commentary on the main sights, such as the Grand Opera House, the Albert Memorial Clock and Queen’s University, where the Botanic Gardens are located. Pause to photograph Belfast City Hall on Donegall Square, at the heart of the city. Construction was completed in 1906 to celebrate Belfast’s city status granted by Queen Victoria in 1888. This landmark Renaissance-style building has a lengthy façade of Portland stone and houses a whispering gallery and numerous paintings and statues. Continue your tour past the city’s famous murals depicting Northern Ireland’s complicated political history and see the Crumlin Road Court House and Crumlin Jail, the only remaining Victorian era prison in Northern Ireland.

This is a coach-based excursion with most of the sightseeing taking place from your vehicle. Any walking at short photo stops will be at your discretion.
An Introduction to Liverpool - Included Excursion
Walking difficulty: Panoramic tour
Liverpool’s rise to one of the world’s greatest ports began after the silting up of Chester in the 1700’s. The city grew on profits from the slave trade and became one of the major ports for European emigration to the New World in the 19th Century. Immigrants also arrived in the city from Ireland, the Caribbean and China and created a colourful melting pot. The significance of the port declined after the Second World War and the city temporarily went in to a slump. However things are improving with areas along its Historic Waterfront now designated a World Heritage Site and the award of the European City of Culture in 2008. Departing the quayside, enjoy a tour of Liverpool’s World Heritage Site, the Maritime Mercantile City, which comprises several locations throughout the city and includes most of the major landmarks. Right at the pier head, pass the iconic “Three Graces”, the Liver Building, Port of Liverpool Building and Cunard Building. From here, continue to Albert Dock, the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings in the UK and home to a number of exciting galleries and museums. The exploration continues to the city centre, where you can admire the magnificent modern style of the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Anglican Cathedral, which is one of the largest cathedrals in the world. The Commercial Quarter, with Liverpool’s fine 18th century Town Hall, encompasses the area of the medieval centre of Liverpool and is now a busy shopping district. Another great part of Liverpool’s heritage is the immortal pop music of The Beatles. Your tour passes places associated with the ‘Fab Four’, including Penny Lane and Mathew Street, where the Cavern Club is located.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society Tour

On the June 19, 1940 Winston Churchill ordered the demilitarisation of the Channel Islands. Unaware of this decision, the German Luftwaffe bombed St Peter Port, killing 33 civilians. Two days later German troops arrived and so began nearly five years of occupation. The implementation of the Nazi regime brought food shortages and curfews: themes explored in Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows’ award-winning novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, subsequently transformed into a popular film. On this excursion, you board a vintage bus for a guided tour of the island, through each of the characters’ eyes: See the pretty cottages which inspired the creation of Elizabeth and Dawsey Adams’ homes. Journey along rutted lanes and perhaps foggy meadows past the farmhouses within which the fictional literary meetings might have been held. Also drive to the ‘Little Chapel’, considered to be the smallest consecrated church in the world, before continuing along the west coast, stopping for tea or coffee and a piece of Guernsey Gâche. After your refreshments stop, pass the witches stone and the memorial to those that lost their lives in the German bombing raid of 28th June 1940 before re-joining the ship.
Additional Information
There will be approximately 1,500 yards to negotiate on this tour and at least 20 steps. Access to the vintage bus is via steep steps and a narrow entrance. Leg room is less generous than on most modern coaches, and there are no seat belts or air conditioning. Regrettably this vehicle is not suitable for wheelchair users. We reserve the right to substitute an alternative vehicle in the unlikely event of the vintage bus being unavailable.
Fruits of the Valley
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
Visit a local family-run smallholding set in a beautiful valley to sample locally grown Rocquettes Cider in its orchard environment. A short drive to the cider orchard will take you through the heart of the Guernsey countryside to visit the home of Rocquettes cider, La Pommeraye. Cider making in the Channel Islands dates back to the 1700's when the skills were brought over the Channel from nearby Normandy in France. This tradition has been re-introduced with the planting of over 5,000 apple trees since re-establishing the industry in 1998. There is always something to see at this family-run cider farm, from bluebells, trees in full blossom, the rose garden and a buzzard or two hovering in the sky. You will be guided around the apple orchard and shown the cider making process. During your visit, you will be invited into the tasting barn, where you will be treated to an informal cider tasting session, with carbonated and still cider, fruit liqueurs and apple juice, all produced on site. Nibbles of local cheese and biscuits will also be offered, along with a sample of the farm’s own apple chutneys. After an enjoyable visit you will re-board your coach for a scenic drive along the west coast back to the harbour.
Additional Information
Expect to walk approximately 500 yards at the farm, which will involve some uneven, rural terrain, gradients and steps. Good mobility is required to explore the farm. The tasting is informal and you will help yourself to many of the items. The selection of items available for tasting on the day may differ to those mentioned.
Guernsey Gardens and Wildflower Walk
Walking difficulty: Strenuous Activity
Your coach will take you to Sausmarez Manor, where you can spend time exploring the historic grounds on foot. The original manor house was built in the early 13th century, but little remains of the original as it has been rebuilt over the following centuries. The façade you see today dates from 1714 and the reign of Queen Anne. The surrounding natural woodland gardens are a delight throughout the year, with many species of Mediterranean plants thriving in this climate. The Giant Echium are a special feature of the grounds, reaching heights of six to seven metres, and during the spring and summer months, the camellias, tree ferns, hydrangeas and fuchsias provide a colourful backdrop to the modern sculptures scattered throughout the garden. After some time at the manor, you’ll continue to Icart – a viewpoint over the south coast bays. You may wish to join a guided 15- 20-minute ramble along the cliff path to see the wildflowers and more stunning views. Your coach will continue to Candie Gardens, which were once part of a private estate but are now a public garden. There are numerous mature trees and shrubs, including the largest Canary Palm in the UK, a huge Gingko Biloba which was brought back from China in 1900, and a Magnolia Grandiflora Goliath. The two original glasshouses are home to a variety of tropical plants, including the Nerine Lilly from South Africa, which is also Guernsey’s national flower. You will also see two statues in the grounds, one of Queen Victoria dating from 1900 and one of Victor Hugo which was gifted to the island by the people of France in 1914. After your visit, you’ll be driven back to your ship.

There will be walking of approximately one-and-a-half miles in total, over uneven ground with inclines and a few steps. You will need to remain standing for lengthy periods at each venue.
Discover Guernsey and Little Chapel
Walking difficulty: Easy Activity
Beautiful scenery awaits you on this memorable drive to the north. Passing through St Sampson and Bordeaux Harbour, you arrive at Pembroke Bay for a short stop to take photographs of the rugged coastline. Continue to ancient Vale Church, consecrated in 1117, and along the west coast to Cobo Bay where the distinctive pink-red hue of the rocks can be seen. Discover the beautiful wide expanse of sandy Vazon Bay before turning inland at Rocquaine Bay. Pause for tea or coffee and a slice of Guernsey ‘gache’, a type of fruit bread, before continuing to the Little Chapel. Like the fabulous buildings designed by Gaudí in Barcelona, the Little Chapel’s exterior has been created using thousands of broken pieces of china, pebbles and glass. Unlike the landmarks in Barcelona however, this tiny chapel is the work of a little-known monk, Déodat, and his friend, Brother Cephas. Modelled on the grotto at Lourdes, the Little Chapel is barely 16 feet long and can accommodate no more than a dozen people. Originally erected in 1914, it was rebuilt in 1923 after the Bishop of Portsmouth was unable to fit through the door! In more recent years it has undergone a major restoration to safeguard its future.

There is approximately 300 to 400 yards' walking at the Little Chapel, plus 21 steps up from the roadside and one or two more to go inside.
Occupied Guernsey
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
Over many centuries, the Channel Islands have been seen as a strategic gateway to invading British soil and were the only part of the British Isles to end up under enemy rule during World War Two. On departure from St Peter Port Harbour, your coach heads inland to the German Underground Hospital, consisting of more than 75,000 square feet of tunnels housed within the largest World War Two structure in the Channel Islands. After time to visit this fascinating museum, the coach heads out to the most south-westerly part of Guernsey’s coastline, Pleinmont Point. Explore a fully-restored German gun emplacement, Batterie Dollman, as well as passing a high observation tower. Descend back down to sea level, passing fortifications from both the Napoleonic era and the more recent German Occupation. Spot one of the most iconic historic constructions - the Martello Tower - situated at Rocquaine Bay. We stop here for a short while for free time to visit Guernsey Pearl if you should wish to purchase refreshments. We then continue our drive along the west coast to another Martello Tower, Fort Hommet, overlooking the spectacular Vazon Bay.
Additional Information
Expect to walk at least 600 yards with long periods of standing on this excursion. Visiting Pleinmont Point involves a further 600-yard stroll along an uneven clifftop path, although you may remain in or near the coach if you prefer.
Pepper Pot Ramble
Walking difficulty: Strenuous Activity
Enjoy the scenic bays on the south-east coast of Guernsey, as well as views of the neighbouring islands of Herm and Sark, from the high vantage point of the coastal cliff path, and fortifications along the way. Upon arrival by tender into St Peter Port Harbour, you'll take a coach transfer to the Napoleonic watch tower (known as the Pepper Pot) that overlooks the clear waters of Fermain Bay down below. Begin your walk by heading northwards, with the cliff path climbing through the woods. This leads you to a reminder of wartime Guernsey, the German military cemetery which dates back to the 1940s. The area is steeped in military history, with the former barracks of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry situated just above the cliff path at Fort George, which since the 1970s has become the residence of many of the most wealthy residents in the Bailiwick. With the islands of Sark and Brecqhou just a few miles to the east, continue your walk and descend the granite lined pathway and steps to the restored Clarence Battery. Built in 1780, this is one of the remaining parts of Fort George – the island's principal fort during the French Revolution. As you drop down to sea level, the shoreline is dominated by the natural seawater bathing pools which are a popular choice for sheltered swimming throughout the summer months. Here you'll also find a cafe, where your guide will treat you to a well-deserved refreshment of your choice – be it ice-cream, tea, coffee or a soft drink. Guernsey has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, and dependent on the tide, you'll take a walk across Havelet Bay (or otherwise follow the sea wall) as you return to the St Peter Port seafront, passing the yacht marinas and restaurants that make up the eastern seaboard before arriving back at the harbour.
Additional Information
This excursion covers a distance of approximately two-and-a-half miles. You will encounter multiple steps, steep inclines and uneven surfaces throughout the walk. A high level of physical fitness is required to participate along with suitable outdoor footwear and clothing.
The Herm Explorer Wildlife Voyage
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
Step on board a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) for an exhilarating and interactive small group experience, combining coastal scenery and wildlife. Your excursion begins with a short walk from the tender landing to your RIB where you will be met by your captain and host. You will be kitted out with a waterproof coat and life jacket whilst listening to a short welcome and safety briefing, before the fun begins! Travel around the neighbouring island of Herm with its beautiful islets, reefs and beaches. Your captain-guide will provide an informative commentary along the way, discussing local history, folklore and the local rich maritime heritage. During your ride, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife – dolphins, seals, puffin and guillemots are often spotted. Pass an abandoned Victorian fort which stands on its own island and learn more about its history. This unique and memorable experience ends as you return to St Peter Port.
Additional Information
This excursion involves very limited walking, but you will need to embark and disembark the boat independently which requires a good level of mobility. Your boat will travel at high speed and participants may get wet. We do not recommend this excursion for those suffering with back problems as the ride can get a little bumpy. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Leisurely Sark
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
This excursion begins with a scenic ferry journey past the smaller islands of Herm, Jethou and Brecqhou en route to Sark. This tiny island has an area of just over two square miles and a population of about 600. Part of the historic Duchy of Normandy, Sark remains a possession of the British crown. Since the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the island has been leased to a local Head of State known as the ‘seigneur’, and the island retained a form of feudal government until its first general election was held in 2008. View the fishermen in the harbour laying lobster and crab pots before taking a ‘tractor-bus’ up the steep path to the main village. Next, enjoy a horse and carriage ride around the island, stopping at La Seigneurie gardens. You then have free time for lunch, shopping for souvenirs and perhaps taking a short walk, before heading back to the harbour where you take the ferry back to St Peter Port.
Additional Information
There are up to 30 steps to and from the ferries in Guernsey and Sark, and there is a 200-yard walk to the carriage, which has three or four steps up to it. In addition there may be a walk of 500 yards between the tender quay and the ferry departure point. Walking on Sark is at your discretion: you should expect to cover between 500 yards and one mile if you wish to view the island’s main sights. Roads are reasonably flat but most are simple dirt tracks.
Cruise into the Helford River Estuary
Walking difficulty: Easy Activity
Discover the rugged landscape and the scenic waters of the Helford River by boat, with tree covered inland creeks and a wide range of bird species flying overhead. Departing the ship, take a short coach transfer to the Princes of Wales Pier to board your river cruise boat. Leaving Falmouth Harbour, pass Falmouth Docks, Pendennis and St Mawes Castles and St Anthony’s Lighthouse. Then enter the Helford River: a popular, large estuary renowned for its scenery and marine ecology. By boat, explore the river and discover the inland creeks. The steep sides of the tree-covered creeks rise sharply from the water whilst the mud banks provide habitats for a wide range of bird species, including little egrets, grey herons, cormorants and various divers, grebes and ducks. Other points of interest on the cruise include Trebah beach (embarkation point for American troops on D Day), Manderley House (famed by the author Daphne Du Maurier, in her novel ‘Rebecca’), Helford Passage and Village, and a view of Daphne Du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek. Afterwards, return to Falmouth Harbour and take the short coach transfer back to the ship.
Additional Information
The sightseeing boat has both inside and outside seating. Minimal walking is required but depending on the tide levels on the day, there may be up to 25 steps to board the boat. These steps can be slippery when wet and have no handrail. The Explore Ashore team on board can provide additional information regarding the expected boarding process on the day. If the weather conditions are not suitable for cruising on the Helford River, you will instead enjoy a cruise on the River Fal.
Trebah Gardens
Walking difficulty: Strenuous Activity
Your trip begins with a short drive to Trebah Gardens, a 26-acre sub-tropical Cornish ravine garden, which is rated among the 80 finest gardens in the world and one of Cornwall's top five. This floral paradise is home to a unique collection of rare and exotic plants, trees and shrubs. Enjoy a tour with an expert guide and marvel at the water gardens complete with koi carp, the one-hundred-year-old tree ferns and 18-feet giant rhubarb. The paths through the gardens lead down to a private and secluded beach on the Helford River. Following your tour of the gardens, you may spend some free time exploring them on your own. Returning to your coach, enjoy a scenic drive back to Falmouth along the Cornish coast. Head towards Pendennis Castle, where you pause for photos. With its coastal setting, Pendennis offers panoramic views of Falmouth, St Mawes and the Fal Estuary. From here it is just a short journey back to your ship.
Additional Information
Trebah is a ravine garden, so there are steep sections on some paths and about 30 steps. The total walking distance covers approximately one mile, and we do not recommend this tour for those with limited mobility.
Idyllic St Ives

Visit St Ives, with its narrow winding streets, harbour and sandy beaches. The town has long been a haven for artists and is now home to an outpost of the world-famous Tate Gallery. This excursion provides an opportunity to explore its treasures and understand why St Ives is known as the jewel in Cornwall’s crown. Departing from Falmouth, pass through Cornish countryside and a patchwork of fields and rolling hills. Your journey will take you via the tin mining route, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site where relics of the mining era can still be seen along the roads. Reach the northern coast of Cornwall, with its wide, sandy bays, and arrive in the town of St Ives. The town first thrived as a bustling port, with around 400 boats pilchard fishing during the mid-19th century. Additionally, sailing ships were involved in importing coal and exporting tin, copper, stone, and fish. Since the arrival of the railways in the late 1800s, St Ives grew into a popular holiday destination, famous for its beaches and quintessentially English atmosphere. After an introduction from your guide, you will have time to stroll through this colourful and quaint town with flower bedecked granite cottages, cobbled streets and narrow alleyways - all surrounding a sheltered harbour and golden beach. There are numerous craft shops and galleries in the town, as well as walking routes through the town or along the beach. At the designated meeting time, return to your coach for the drive back to Falmouth.

The Cornish Coast to Lands End

Head away from Falmouth on a scenic journey into an area of Cornwall which you may recognise from Rosamunde Pilcher’s romantic novels and film adaptations. Drive past the wide sweep of Mounts Bay to the village of Marazion, from where you can see the granite tidal island of St Michael’s Mount, crowned by its historic castle. Journey back through the countryside, through the harbour town of Penzance, on to Land’s End, the most westerly point of mainland Britain. Admire the dramatic scenery where cliffs plunge into the sea and the surf pounds the shore. The English Channel lies to the east and to the west is the Celtic Sea. After taking in the view, continue your tour inland along the tin mining route, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Relics of the mining industry, such as chimney stacks and derelict engine houses, can still be seen along the winding roads, which are fringed by heather and green fields and dotted with historic stone cottages. Then head back to Falmouth and your ship.

A Hop Across to St Mawes

Discover Cornwall off the beaten track, beginning with a ferry ride to the beautiful Roseland Peninsula, an area of unspoiled natural beauty that has inspired numerous authors and artists and historic St Mawes and its castle.
Departing from the quayside in Falmouth, walk to the ferry departure point for your foot passenger crossing of the River Fal. After the 20-minute crossing, arrive in St Mawes, a charming harbour town with a well-preserved coastal fortress. St Mawes has had a range of notable visitors in the past, including several members of the Royal Family. From the ferry, stroll up the hill to visit St Mawes Castle – among the best-preserved of Henry VIII's coastal artillery fortresses and the most elaborately decorated of them all. Built between 1539 and 1545, the castle is part of a chain of forts to counter the threat of invasion, and guarded the important anchorage of Carrick Roads. Wander around its charming clover-leaf shape which was originally surrounded by octagonal defences and notice the embellishment of Latin inscriptions in praise of King Henry VIII and his son Edward VI.
Following your castle visit, stroll back into the town and enjoy some free time. This old fishing port is full of character, with narrow streets, old flower-bedecked cottages and small shops. You will be given a voucher to enjoy a delicious ‘99’ ice cream from the local fudge shop. Perhaps enjoy it whilst sitting beside the water, before returning to Falmouth on the ferry. On arrival back in Falmouth, return to the ship on foot.

This includes a walk of a little over half a mile between Falmouth port and the ferry departure point and the same on the return. The walk to St Mawes Castle is on a gradient which becomes steeper as you approach the castle. A good level of physical fitness is required to participate in this excursion. The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Cornwall is home to many world-famous gardens and this tour takes you to visit one of the most intriguing: The Lost Gardens of Heligan, a restored Victorian garden. Leave Falmouth behind and travel through the Cornish countryside, passing the cathedral city of Truro and the town of St Austell before arriving at the Lost Gardens of Heligan, where you will have free time to explore the different areas of the garden and enjoy the lush vegetation. The gardens at Heligan Manor were one of the glories of Victorian Cornwall, almost completely self-sufficient, they included a number of farms, quarries, woods, brickworks, a flour mill, sawmill, brewery, and productive orchards and kitchen gardens. However, after World War One the gardens fell into disuse and gradually became lost in the overgrowth, where they would remain for over 70 years. The Lost Gardens of Heligan project, Europe's largest garden restoration, has returned the gardens to their former glory and has been documented both in books and on national television. Over 200 acres of working Victorian gardens and pleasure grounds, together with a complex of walled gardens are the result of ten years of restoration. Heligan is a unique time capsule, a testament to the Victorian vision and ingenuity which first created this subtropical paradise. Enjoy a walk in the jungle with its dense vegetation and exotic plants, take a stroll in the pleasure grounds of The Northern gardens, go in search of the Mud Maid, Grey Lady and Giant’s Head sculptures hidden within the woodlands and admire the colourful displays within the Flower Gardens. After your visit you will return directly to the ship at Falmouth.

Delights of St Mary's Walk

Take a walk around the Garrison on St Marys to see the Elizabethan defences and Star Castle Hotel, as well as the far-reaching view across to the outer islands and the famous Bishop Rock Lighthouse. The Isles of Scilly are comprised of just five inhabited islands within a windswept archipelago of numerous isolated rocky islets situated 28 miles from Land’s End, the most south-westerly point of the British Isles. St Mary’s, the most populous island, is home to Hugh Town, the islands’ tiny capital, where a local guide will entertain and inform you about the rich history of one of the most impressive coastal defence systems in England, plus observations and insights on local wildlife and island life. Perched high on a hill above Hugh Town, the Garrison is a well-preserved coastal fort with the Elizabethan-era Star Castle (now a hotel) at its centre. The main fortifications date from the 17th Century with a fascinating history spanning over 350 years, from providing a Royalist refuge in the English Civil War to being at the forefront of the Battle of the Atlantic in World War Two. Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee at the Star Castle Hotel before returning to your ship.

St Mary's History Walk

St Mary’s, the most populous island, is home to Hugh Town, the islands’ tiny capital, where a local guide will entertain and inform you about the rich history of one of the most impressive coastal defence systems in England, plus observations and insights on local wildlife and island life. Your walk across St Mary’s touches on thousands of years of human inhabitation in the islands and their key role in England’s defence since Elizabethan times. The walk comes through the main part of Hugh Town, up over Buzza Hill where you can see a wonderful view across the archipelago. From there continue down into the Old Town to visit the Old Town Church, where you can see the grave of Harold Wilson and look inside the medieval church. Continue across Old Town Bay, and then through Lower Moors to the west side of the island, with its picturesque harbour and pilot gig racing history. Finally, return to the quay for the tender journey back to your ship.

The Legendary Giant’s Causeway

From Belfast’s port, you drive through County Antrim and make a short photo-stop at the viewpoint overlooking Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, which spans a chasm some 80 feet deep. From here continue to the world-famous Giant’s Causeway. The 40,000 irregular basalt columns here are thought to have resulted from volcanic activity, but they have also been the subject of many intriguing legends. One of the most popular is that a giant, Finn MacCool, constructed the causeway as a path to his true love, Oonagh. The unique rock formations have stood for millions of years as a natural rampart against the ferocity of the Atlantic storms, and the rugged symmetry of the columns never fail to intrigue and inspire. As you travel back to Belfast, admire unspoilt coastal scenery and make a short stop by Dunluce Castle. Perched on the edge of a steep crag and dating back to the 13th century, the castle ruins offer an opportunity for dramatic photographs.

The Titanic Experience and Giant's Causeway

This full-day excursion visits two of Northern Ireland’s most popular visitor attractions: the Titanic Museum and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Giants Causeway. Begin with a visit to the purpose-built Titanic Belfast Museum which opened in April 2012, nearly 100 years to the day since the disaster. It contains nine galleries offering a deep insight into the tragedy of this event through scale models, interpretative materials and an included immersive ride through the Titanic under construction. Stories of passengers, crew and the heroes of the day are told in an exciting and modern way, and you’ll have approximately two hours here to browse the museum at your own pace. After, re-join your tour vehicle and guide for your journey to the Giants Causeway, travelling along the inland route from the City of Belfast to the North Coast of Antrim. On arrival, browse the visitors centre which explains how the causeway’s 40,000 basalt stones were formed. Stories about the area’s rich mythology, history, geology, flora and fauna will paint the Causeway in your mind’s eye before you make your way to the stones themselves. The Historic Royal Palace of Hillsborough

Leaving Belfast, travel to the village of Hillsborough, which has won many awards in the ‘Ulster in Bloom’ competition. At the Historic Royal Palace of Hillsborough, see the official Northern Ireland residence of the royal family and visiting dignitaries. Hillsborough has also played an important role in the Peace Process in Northern Ireland since the 1980s. A guided tour of the palace acquaints you with tales of the Hill family – who held the title of Marquess of Devonshire – and of the Governors of Northern Ireland. Learn more about Hillsborough’s role in recent Northern Irish history and view its furnishings and works of art. Afterwards, you will have time to stroll in the gardens before returning to your ship.

Scenic Coast and Glens

This tour showcases the very best that Northern Ireland has to offer, from the rugged cliffs of the coast to the beauty of the glens. Leaving Belfast, head along the coastal road to Glenariff Forest Park. At each bend in the road, dramatic headlands and bays come into view. Glenariff Forest Park forms part of the world-famous Glens of Antrim, an area where tourists have been coming for over a century. Glenariff, called the ‘Queen of the Glens’, is considered by many to be the most beautiful of the nine Antrim Glens. The park covers an area of over 2,900 acres, most made up of dense forests. The remaining 700 acres include several small lakes, recreation areas and spaces that have been left open for landscape and conservation reasons. The park is bisected by two small rivers - the Inver and the Glenariff. During their course through the park, they form tranquil pools, waterfalls and stretches of fast-flowing water that tumble through steep-sided, rocky gorges. Spend some free time in the national park before continuing to the tea house for tea or coffee and homemade scones. The Glenariff Tea House is famous throughout Ireland for its views across the park and along the glen to the sea. You have time to enjoy this spot before re-joining your coach and heading back via Ballymena to the port of Belfast.

Belfast - Birthplace of the Titanic

Belfast is a city of industry and elegance, with a rich and varied past. Its origins go back to an ancient fort controlling the ford across the River Lagan, which flows through the city. Your excursion starts with a panoramic tour that will introduce you to the many varied features of Northern Ireland’s largest city. Built with 19th-century industrial wealth, many fine Victorian buildings still grace the city as reminders of its prosperous past. Your guide will point out sights, such as the Grand Opera House and Albert Clock, as you wind your way through the city. You drive past Belfast City Hall - an impressive building with a long façade of Portland stone - which dominates Donegall Square. In the grounds you can see a marble statue by Sir Thomas Brock that commemorates sinking in 1912 of the RMS Titanic. From here you continue to Titanic Belfast. Opened in April 2012, this dramatic new building tells the story of the ill-fated Belfast-built liner. Its nine galleries incorporate a variety of interpretative materials and media including CGI, film, audio and scale models. Begin your visit in the building's giant atrium surrounded by the four ‘hull’ shaped sections which house the exhibition. The stories of passengers, crew and the heroes of the day are told in an exciting and modern way. The tour concludes with a ‘virtual visit’ to the wreck at her resting place on the floor of the North Atlantic, returning to your Saga ship.

Chester and Port Sunlight

Departing Royal Albert Dock, head through the historic Mersey Tunnel to the Wirral peninsula that separates the Mersey and Dee Rivers. Arrive at Chester, situated on the Dee and once a port to rival Liverpool before the river silted up. First settled by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago, Chester boasts one of the UK’s most complete circuits of city walls, with sections dating back to the Roman times. The city has a fascinating history: it was sacked by the forces of William the Conqueror and besieged by the Roundheads during the English Civil War as well as being an important stop on the trade routes to Ireland. There are many buildings of interest to see in the city, including the remains of a Roman Amphitheatre, and the medieval Cathedral. The shopping arcades, known as the Rows, are one of the most famous attractions of the city centre. These unique two-tiered galleries date from Tudor times and are excellent examples of traditional black and white half-timbered architecture. After seeing some of the sights from your tour vehicle, enjoy a short walk through the centre. Continue to charming Port Sunlight, a model village, built by the Lever family for their soap factory workers to provide decent accommodation, education, entertainment, and welfare. After a short stop here, we will return to the ship.

Liverpool and The Beatles Story

On this magical mystery tour, see many of the sights that inspired The Beatles – from Penny Lane to the Empire Theatre – and discover how this city shaped the music that we all know and love from the comfort of your tour vehicle. Begin with a visit to The Beatles Story, a state-of-the-art attraction located in Albert Dock. Explore the lives of John, Paul, George and Ringo by walking through recreations of key locations from the band’s career, such as the Cavern Club and Abbey Road Studios. See drawings created by Lennon, Ringo’s drumkit and original handwritten lyrics. This tour is a must for any fans of music, The Beatles or the history of pop culture. Afterwards, take a panoramic tour of the city through The Beatles’ eyes. Pass Liverpool’s college of art, where Lennon’s passion for art was harnessed and the Empire Theatre, where the band gave their final Liverpool concert in December 1965, among many other sights.

Liverpool City Walk

This guided walking tour is a chance to experience Liverpool's rich and varied architectural heritage up close. Starting at the quayside, you’ll see the Three Graces of Liverpool’s historic waterfront: The Royal Liver Building, built in 1911; the Italian palatial-style Cunard Building, built between 1913 and 1916; and the neo-Baroque Port of Liverpool Building, built between 1904 and 1907. This waterfront trio recall an age of pre-first world war confidence and optimism. On the Liver Building look out for the twin Liver Birds – the city’s guardian angels. In its heyday, Albert Dock’s innovation was to enable ships to berth right alongside warehouses. Built in 1846, its pioneering iron, brick and stone construction involved no wooden framework. Later, a cargo store, today comprehensively renovated, it boasts a selection of hotels, bars, and restaurants. Heading up into the city, pass by the Beaux Arts-style Queen Victoria Monument at Derby Square, built on the former site of Liverpool Castle. From here it’s a short walk to Matthew Street where you’ll pass the famous Cavern Club, one time haunt of The Beatles, who played here no less than 292 times between 1961 and 1963. Before returning to the ship you’ll pass the former Adelphi Bank building and the 19th-century Church of Our Lady and St Nicholas, which was badly damaged during World War Two.

Exploring Angelsey's Coastline

Declared a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the coastline of Angelsey is a paradise for photographers, birdwatchers and those that simply want to explore the outdoors. On this tour, enjoy traditional Welsh cakes and visit the town with the longest place name in Europe. Begin with a scenic drive, passing through the villages of Aberffaw and Newborough – settlements seemingly enveloped by picturesque surroundings. Your first stop is at Llanfair-pwllgwyngyll-gogerychwyrn-drobwllllanty-siliogogogoch – quite the tongue twister – where you have time to snap a picture of the town’s famous name sign. Re-boarding your tour vehicle, advance along the shores of the Menai Strait, stopping at a viewpoint which looks out across to the Menai Suspension Bridge. Continue to the pretty town of Beaumaris where you'll make a stop for refreshments, including traditional Welsh cakes. Finally, return to Holyhead and your ship via the northern coastal route.

This excursion is largely panoramic with most of the sightseeing taking place from your vehicle. Short stops will be made along the way. You should expect to walk up to 200 yards in total at the various stops.
Peaks and Valleys of Snowdonia

Enjoy a panoramic tour of Snowdonia National Park, where a series of dramatic mountain peaks are separated by peaceful valleys dotted with quaint towns and villages. Head out from Holyhead to travel through the lush countryside of the Isle of Angelsey and across the Menai Straits, a narrow strip of cascading seawater, separating the Isle of Anglesey from Wales. Pass through the historic walled town of Caernarfon, with its UNESCO-listed 13th-century castle. This medieval castle was built by Edward I as part of his ‘Iron Ring’ designed to contain the Welsh and was used as a seat of government as well as a Royal palace. It was here that King Charles was crowned Prince of Wales in 1969. Continue inland towards the rugged landscapes of Snowdonia National Park, which boasts some of the country’s most naturally beautiful scenery, with over 100 lakes and a series craggy peaks. Pause at the town of Llanberis, set beside the Llyn Padarn Lake, in the cradle of the Snowdon Range before continuing along the Llanberis pass that skirts the base of Snowdon and driving through the small mountain village of Capel Curig. Head north-west along the Nant Ffrancon Pass back to Holyhead and your ship.

Beaumaris Castle and Isle of Anglesey

When Edward I marched west and annexed what would become the principality of Wales during the mid-13th century, he recognised the importance of defence: subsequent Welsh uprisings could spell disaster for his crown. A lasting solution was required. That solution became known as the ‘Iron Ring’ – a series of defensively impressive castles, each one a day’s ride from another and boasting seemingly impregnable walls. On this tour, make a visit to one such fortification: Beaumaris. While travelling to the castle, pass the town with the longest place name in Europe – Llanfair-pwllgwyngyll-gogerychwyrn-drobwllllanty-siliogogogoch - which means ‘St Mary’s church in the hollow of the white hazel near the fierce whirlpool of St Tysilio of the red cave’ in Welsh. Cross over the Menai Suspension Bridge, built by Thomas Telford in 1810, before heading into the town of Beaumaris to the castle. Potential attackers during Edward I’s reign certainly would not have received the same warm welcome that you will today: a moat surrounds the fortifications, creating just one of 14 deadly obstacles. However, the castle did not have to face any attackers: the king’s coffers quickly became empty and there was no money to pay the huge workforce (which included 400 stonemasons), so the project was halted. It is therefore an impressive, incomplete ruin. Leaving the castle, enjoy some free time in the town of Beaumaris itself. Perhaps browse the quaint shops or purchase refreshments in a local cafe. Finally, a scenic drive takes you along the north west coast of Anglesey, which has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Enjoy the views before returning to Holyhead and your awaiting ship.

Portmeirion & Snowdonia

In 1925, Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis had a plan. He wanted to prove to fellow architects that an area of natural beauty could be enhanced without being spoilt. Portmeirion was founded, filled with Mediterranean-influenced architecture combined with surreal elements that offered sudden panoramic views. Step into this world of architectural creativity for yourself and discover why its construction took almost 50 years! Start your excursion with a countryside drive through the lush landscape, across the Menai Straits to the private village of Portmeirion, designed as an ‘ideal village’. Your guide will explain its origins and point out its many unique features – many of which were utilised during filming of The Prisoner – a 1960s cult classic television series starring Patrick McGoohan who played Number Six. The town’s designer, Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, noted that Portmeirion would often ‘steal the show from its human cast’. Enjoy free time to explore at leisure before returning to your tour vehicle. Continue via Beddgelert to the lakeside location of Llanberis for some free time and spot the hikers beginning their adventure to the summit of Snowdon. Return to Holyhead, through less mountainous countryside to your awaiting ship.

Plas Newydd House & Garden

Boasting views across Snowdonia and along the Menai Strait, Plas Newydd (not to be confused with the stately home with the same name in Llangollen) is visually stunning and undeniably historic – ancestral home of the Marquess of Anglesey. On this tour, pass through its grand entranceway and into an era dominated by the Napoleonic Wars and ruled by those with grand social titles. On your journey to the house, make a stop at Llanfair-pwllgwyngyll-gogerychwyrn-drobwllllanty-siliogogogoch, the town with the longest place name in Europe - certainly a tongue twister to impress your friends with (if you can work out how to pronounce its many syllables). You will soon arrive at Plas Newydd, perhaps noting its different architectural styles: the house is an elegant 18th-century mansion utilising both Classical and Gothic styles, built around a 14th-century hall. Inside, you will find ornate ceilings suspended above lavishly-decorated rooms. See the exquisite romantic mural, painted by Rex Whistler – his largest painting – and learn about Henry William, who led a cavalry charge during the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and was awarded the title of 1st Marquess of Anglesey for his bravery. You have plenty of time to explore the estate at leisure, perhaps calling into the military museum, before walking through the well-tended gardens. Return to the port via a different route: one that passes through the pretty villages of Averffaw and Newborough to perhaps capture any final Welsh beauty before arriving at the ship.

Ffestiniog Railway

Take the opportunity to travel on the world-famous Ffestiniog Railway aboard a unique, steam-hauled narrow-gauge train. Leaving the pier, cross the island of Anglesey with its landscapes of meadow, farmland and low-lying hills and over the Menai Strait, via Caernarfon and down to Porthmadog: an attractive busy little town standing on an inlet of Tremadoc Bay. With fine views across the bay to the mountains of Snowdonia, Porthmadog was once a flourishing port, its prosperity built on the slate trade. Here you will begin your journey on the Ffestiniog Railway, the oldest of the Welsh narrow-gauge railways which was founded in 1832 to bring slate from the quarries of Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog for shipment. The railway closed in 1964 but has since been restored and is now one of the most popular attractions of North Wales. A steam-hauled narrow-gauge train runs along a 13 mile mainline in miniature from the coastline at Porthmadog into the mountains at Blaenau Ffestiniog. Your memorable journey climbs 700 feet through tranquil pastures and forests, past lakes and waterfalls, round horseshoe bends and even in a complete spiral. Every twist and turn will bring you impressive vistas through the carriage window. Upon arrival in Blaenau, you re-join your coach for the return journey to Holyhead.

There are no refreshments served during this excursion and therefore we recommend bringing your own. This excursion involves a coach journey of approximately one hour 45 minutes in each direction. Charm of Western Wales

Leave the quaint town of Fishguard and head south-west where you will uncover Newgale Sands. At two miles in length, this is one of Wales’ biggest and most renowned beaches. Newgale’s position on the far western coast of Wales makes it an ideal spot for surfing with waves coming uninterrupted from the Atlantic Ocean. At high tide, Newgale tends to lose its sandy aesthetic- leaving a huge pebble bank stretching the length of the beach in its path; the cause of this formation was created back in 1859 during an unfortunate almighty storm. Continue to the remarkable city of St David’s, the smallest city both in size and population in the whole of the United Kingdom. Named after the patron Saint of Wales, St David’s is a magical place and the location for Wales' most important religious monument, the huge St David’s Cathedral. Since the 6th century, it dominates the city and surrounding countryside and provides regular services along with some of the “world’s best” religious choir performances during festival seasons. Enjoy a visit to the cathedral followed by some free time to explore further at leisure. Before returning to the pier, travel through the only national park that is entirely coastal: Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, with a wonderful series of rugged cliffs, rocky coves and sheltered sandy beaches.

Carew Castle and Tenby

The historic southern coast of Pembrokeshire was settled by Norman invaders in the 11th century. By building a series of castles, the Normans created a land known as ‘Little England beyond Wales’. As a result of pushing the native Welsh people to the north, the Normans created the historical ‘Landsker Line’, separating the Welsh speaking people from the English speakers to the south of the county. Travel to the small town of Carew and visit the impressive ruins of Carew Castle. There has been a castle on this site since the Norman Conquest and the remains of the building show its development through to Elizabethan times. Head back in time and explore the fascinating past of the castles various owners as well as discovering the 19th Century Water Mill located in the extensive grounds. Afterwards, continue south through the historic and quintessential seaside town of Tenby. Here, you will enjoy a short stop within the 13th century town walls and learn about its own ruined castle. The town walls of Tenby are known to be notably significant as they are packed with history since they acted as defensive structures during the medieval times. Tenby was an important stronghold but is now more famous for its three impressive beaches and safe, clean bathing water.

Enjoy a guided visit to the cathedral followed by a stop for a hot drink an traditional Welsh cakes. From St David’s, continue to the historic and quintessential seaside town of Tenby. Here, your guide will introduce you to the 13th century town walls its ruined castle. The town walls of Tenby are known to be notably significant as they are packed with history since they acted as defensive structures during the medieval times. Tenby was an important stronghold but is now more famous for its three impressive beaches and safe, clean bathing water. Enjoy approximately 90 minutes to explore the town at your leisure. Perhaps take a stroll on the beach, browse the delightful shops or purchase lunch in one of the many eateries. Finally, return to your coach for the drive back to Fishguard.

Tenby and Lovespoon Carving

From Fishguard, travel south and inland through fertile farmland towards the Lovespoons Workshop. The Welsh tradition of carving lovespoons dates back to the 17th century with the earliest example being dated back to 1667. The Lovespoons Workshop has an impressive collection of unique spoons with its first ever spoon made as an attempt by Thomas, the Woodcarver, to save himself having to buy an engagement ring. Each lovespoon holds its own message and theme and your host will be delighted to tell you the stories behind the spoons as well as demonstrate the art of lovespoon carving. Following the demonstration, visit the shop which has an extensive range of hand carved spoons and wooden treasures. Afterwards, you will take the scenic drive back to Fishguard passing through the pleasant holding town of Saundersfoot before arriving in Tenby for a short stop. With its ruined castle and medieval town walls dating to Norman times, Tenby was an important stronghold, but is now more famous for its three beautiful beaches and safe, clean bathing water. Heading away from the coast and inland, cross over the Cleddau Bridge and through the onetime inland river port, and today charming county town of Haverfordwest before arriving back at the ship.

Ramsey Island by Boat

Departing from Fishguard, enjoy a scenic drive through the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, a wonderful series of rugged cliffs, rocky coves and sheltered sandy beaches. Your destination is St David’s, named after the patron saint of Wales and officially recognised as Britain's smallest city. On arrival, embark your small boat for a tour around Ramsey Island to observe the local wildlife including seabirds, natural heritage and more impressive scenery. Ramsey Island is a RSPB reserve and home to spectacular sea caves and large colonies of Atlantic Grey Seals and Porpoises. This dramatic offshore island has cliffs up to 120 meters high, the perfect place for breeding seabirds in spring and early summer. After your boat trip, continue to Whitesand Bay with its photogenic beach, which is a paradise for surfers. Along with its long stretches of sand, it’s renowned for its dramatic high clifftops and rockpools filled with sea life. From here we return to Fishguard following the coast road with its glimpses of the sea and fields and farms inland.

The boat tour will take place on a 12 seater open-topped Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat. Waterproof clothing and footwear is recommended and participants will be provided with a life jacket. You will need to embark and disembark the boat independently. The boat tour may be bumpy and is not recommended for anyone suffering from back pain. This tour may be cancelled at short notice due to the weather or sea conditions. Whilst there is very little walking required on this excursion, it has been graded as a moderate activity due to the nature of the boat trip.
Exploring West Wales - Small Group Experience
Walking difficulty: Strenuous Activity
Spend a day in the company of your local host on this special, small group experience, taking in the scenery and historic hotspots in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. From Fishguard, head north through the coastal villages of Lower Town Fishguard and the glacial valley of Cwm Gwaun. This steep-sided valley was formed out of an epic geological convulsion and the rushing waters from melting glaciers. Geologists list it as one of the most important meltwater channels in Britain from the last Ice Age. It runs from Lower Town Fishguard towards the Preseli Mountains, where the Gwaun River rises to the east of Pontfaen. For most of its 10 miles, it is within the confines of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Leaving the valley floor, continue up over the hills which offer a coastal view of the Irish Sea and the National Park. Then, head into Nevern, a small village with plenty of history. Visit St Brynach’s 6th-century church, where you can see the ‘Bleeding Yew Tree’, along with the Celtic Cross and one of the oldest forms of communication, ‘Ogham’ writing. St Brynach was a disciple of St David, the Welsh Patron Saint. Continue through the narrow country lanes and visit Pentre Ifan. This 5000-year-old dolman is one of Wales oldest preserved monuments. The surrounding landscape is steeped in ancient myth, and you will learn about these legends along the way. The nearby Preseli Hills are home to the bluestones believed to have been used to build Stonehenge, around 150 miles away. You'll learn more about these stones as you travel through this historic landscape. Continue to Castell Henllys Iron Age Fort and visitor centre where a short walk takes you up to the Celtic Round Houses to discover how these Celtic tribes lived, some 2500 years ago. After your visit to the round houses, enjoy a Welsh lunch in the cafe here. Your journey back to Fishguard will take you along the coastal road and through the town of Newport.

This small group excursion will have no more than six participants and your transport will be a people-carrier-style car. Expect to walk approximately one mile in total and encounter some uneven terrain, steps and gradients. A good level of mobility is required to participate.
