Gothenburg, Sweden

Step ashore in southern Sweden and the cosmopolitan city of Gothenburg. With its canals, fascinating architecture, trams and art, this is one of Sweden’s trendiest cities. Join an included panoramic excursion, then soak up the Scandi atmosphere as you stroll along the waterfront or through the ‘Haga’ – the city’s old quarter. The city has a choice of museums and galleries to visit, from the Gothenburg Museum of Art with its fine collections and the cutting edge Roda Sten Art Centre, to the niche Radiomuseet (Radio Museum). Perhaps visit the Volvo Museum and discover more about Sweden’s iconic brand.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The cosmopolitan Danish capital is an eclectic mix of architectural styles which attest to its long history. Once a small village, it was fortified when Bishop Absalon of Roskilde built a castle here in 1167. Attractions include Tivoli Gardens, characterful Nyhavn Canal graced with 17th-century houses, the Baroque-inspired Christiansborg Palace and Rococo Amalienborg Palace, residence of the Danish Royal Family. The Little Mermaid Statue, which has been plucked straight from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy-tale of the same name, graces the waterfront. An included excursion will help you get your bearings.

Klaipeda, Lithuania

Lithuania's main port was built in the Middle Ages by the Teutonic Order, a German crusading military force. Once known as Memel, and part of the Prussian kingdom for centuries, it has had a turbulent history with repeated invasions from Sweden, Russia and Germany. Much of the city was destroyed by fire in the 19th century and rebuilt predominantly in an art nouveau style. Klaipeda has numerous sculptures, including a statue of Ann from Tharau and a Magical Mouse, a diminutive bronze sculpture reputed to convert good wishes into reality.

Gudhjem ⚓, Bornholm, Denmark

Gudhjem is located on the small island of Bornholm, known for its distinctive round churches dating from the 12th century. Visit Hammerhus – the largest fortress ruin in northern Europe. There are a number of museums in the area dedicated to the town’s ceramics and maritime history too.

Warnemünde, Germany

The port town of Warnemünde has an attractive old town brimming with timbered fishermen’s houses. There is an extensive waterfront, complete with a long, white-sand beach, marina and 19th-century lighthouse. Nearby, the Old Stream is lined with 18th-century houses, one of which belonged to Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch, who moved to Warnemünde to escape the bustle of Berlin.
Aarhus, Denmark

Established in Viking times, Aarhus has a strategic position on the Jutland peninsula and has long been an important centre for trade with Germany and the Baltic countries. Today, the city is celebrated for its thriving culture scene, having previously been recognised as a European Capital of Culture. Aarhus has an array of art galleries and museums, such as the ARoS Art Museum and underground Viking Museum where you can learn more about the local history.

Kristiansand ⚓, Norway

The sunny southern Skagerrak coast paints a different picture of Norway with its lowland countryside interrupted only by the occasional painted waterfront house. Along its scalloped coastline lies the popular holiday resort of Kristiansand, founded in 1641 by King Christian IV. Walking difficulty: Panoramic tour
Despite Gothenburg’s reputation for being very walkable, this excursion introduces you to the laidback city by tour vehicle, spotting several of its main sight. Begin with a short photo stop at the Gustav Adolph Square measuring approximately 15,000-square-foot and featuring several pieces of modern art, including ‘Five Fountains and a Ball’ by Silvert Lind Blom. Back on your tour vehicle, you then continue past the post-modern, angular opera house to arrive at ‘Klippan’, a once-bustling industrial district that is today a heritage centre. Learn about the old quarters of Majorna and Masthugget – where sailors and those working in the docks used to live – before spending some time to marvel at the view across the city: we suggest keeping your camera at the ready! Driving back to the city centre, you will pass Slottskogen, Gothenburg’s green and pleasant park. On your way back to the ship you will also see the famous ‘Poseidon’ statue created by Carl Milles, rising above the famous square known as Gotaplatsen. It is located at the end of ‘Avenyn’, Gothenburg’s main boulevard, and marks the end of this introductory sightseeing tour.

Highlights of Copenhagen - Included Excursion
Walking difficulty: Easy Activity
This is an ideal introduction to the Danish capital, Copenhagen, as you will explore 850 years of history in a compact timeframe on a panoramic drive.
Begin with a stop at one of the most famous sights in Copenhagen: The Little Mermaid statue. This creation was completed in 1913 and was erected to express gratitude to Hans Christian Andersen for his well-known fairytales. Continue past Amalienborg Palace, home to his Majesty King Frederik the 10th of Denmark. Your guide will tell you about the palace and surrounding area, which has played a significant role in Danish history. You will also see the Old Stock Exchange and the idyllic Christianshavn district. Finally, stop at the King's Garden which is set beside the Rosenborg Palace. Enjoy a short stroll in this delightful green area which is popular with locals and visitors alike. Return to your awaiting ship after your city exploration.
Additional Information
Most of the sightseeing is from your tour vehicle. You will spend approximately 30 minutes at the King's Garden. Walking of approximately 400 yards is required for a good exploration but this is entirely at your discretion.
Easy Klaipeda - Included Excursion
Walking difficulty: Easy Activity
Begin your introduction to Klaipeda with a scenic drive, passing the former residence of the Prussian queen Louise and the military barracks, from where the 3rd Soviet Coastal Division left Klaipeda under tense circumstances in 1993. Pass the Park of Sculptures, an open air gallery of modern Lithuanian works of art. A popular place to stroll among the locals, the park features more than 100 sculptures and a Russian orthodox church. As your drive continues towards the south of the city, your local guide will provide an insight into life during the Soviet era and how that compares to today. The second half of your tour heads to the delightful Old Town of Klaipeda. Begin your guided tour with a short walk to the Theatre Square, where you will see the sculpture of Ann from Thara, A symbol of love, and the neoclassic theatre. Enjoy some free time in the Old Town, perhaps shop for Lithuanian souvenirs or stroll around the narrow streets, where once craftsmen used to live and ply their trades. Finally, a short coach transfer will bring you back to the ship or if time allows, continue your independent exploration and return to the ship via the shuttle bus service at your convenience.
Additional Information
This excursion involves approximately 200 yards of walking which will involve some uneven, cobblestone surfaces and seven steps. You will have approximately 30 minutes to explore at leisure in the Old Town where walking is at your discretion.
An Introduction to Kristiansand - Included Excursion
Walking difficulty: Panoramic tour
Enjoy a scenic introduction to Kristiansand and the region of Sørlandet, which stretches along the southern coast of Norway. Step aboard your tour vehicle and, in the company of your local guide, you will wind your way past typical Norwegian wooden houses and small boat harbours. Along the way, learn about the region and its people and gain an understanding of why Kristiansand is a popular summer destination for Norwegians. Enjoy a short stop to take in a view of Christiansholm Fortress, built in the 17th century to defend the city from attack. You also pass the pretty Oddernes Church Kirke, constructed in stone and wood and dedicated to the patron saint of the land, Olaf. Your excursion concludes back at the port where you can choose to return to the ship, or if time allows, continue your exploration independently.

Most of the sightseeing during this excursion is from your tour vehicle. Walking during your short stop is entirely at your discretion. There will be no comfort stops made during this two-hour excursion.
Kristiansand on Foot - Included Excursion
Walking difficulty: Strenuous Activity
Discover Kristiansand on foot, with its colourful houses and interesting history. Depart with your guide from the pier along a series of boardwalks to the pretty marina with its little boats and peaceful atmosphere. The marina is surrounded by small bridges, restaurants, shops and wooden maritime inspired buildings painted in red and yellow. You’ll stop at the popular Fish Market, where traders are selling the local catch, before strolling along the seafront to Otterdalsparken, a unique recreational area decorated with fountains and created by the artist and sculptor, Kjell Nupen. Continue to the northeast part of town where the historic Posebyen area is situated. After a devasting town fire in 1892, this was the only area to survive. Posebyen is dominated by its large collection of original, white wooden houses which give the area its character. Finally, you’ll visit the town centre with its colourful square surrounded by green lawns and flower beds, overlooked by the charming Kristiansand Cathedral. You’ll then take a leisurely stroll back to the pier to rejoin your ship.

A choice of two included excursions is offered during your visit to Kristiansand – please select your place on just one of these options. This excursion will involve approximately two miles of walking, mostly on paved paths but with some cobblestone surfaces and slight gradients to negotiate. A good level of physical fitness is required to participate and suitable outdoor footwear and clothing.
Discover the Northern Archipelago
Walking difficulty: Strenuous Activity
Enjoy a tour to Gothenburg’s beautiful northern archipelago. Öckerö municipality is spread over ten islands situated only 25 minutes from Gothenburg City, and is connected to the mainland only by ferry. Öckerö is the municipality’s maritime centre, where fishing boats and boathouses abound. The archipelago is noted for its Arctic flora, ancient remains and stunning views of the sea, beautiful harbours and delightful fishermen's huts. Your tour begins with a scenic drive to Lilla Varholmen, followed by a short ferry crossing. Take a tour of charming Öckerö and Hälsö, stopping to visit the old church at Öckerö that dates back to the Middle Ages. Enjoy a visit to a local folklore centre, where you enjoy coffee and pastries before leaving Öckerö for the islands of Fotö and Hönö, which are connected to Öckerö by road bridges. As you cross between the islands, look out of the window for an extensive view of the whole archipelago. Once on Hönö, join your guide for a walking tour of the island's main settlement, a typical old fishing village where fishermen's huts are nestled beneath granite cliffs. Rejoin your coach after the walk and head back to the ship, with a short ferry crossing back to the mainland.

You should expect to walk approximately one mile, over surfaces that may be rough and uneven. Views will depend on the weather.
Gothenburg's Canals and Botanical Gardens
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
Begin your tour with a short coach drive to Kungsportsplatsen where you will embark one of the characteristic flat-bottomed boats known as ‘Paddans’ for a fifty-minute cruise around the city’s network of canals. These canals are reminiscent of the moats that surround castles and were constructed by Dutch engineers in the seventeenth century. The boat accommodates over 80 passengers and cruises past the sights of Lejontrappan, Lilla Bommen and Fiskekyrkan. See the old shipyards and fishing port, and pass under the notorious low bridge known as the ‘cheese slicer’ when you leave the canal system for a short cruise into Gothenburg Harbour, the largest in Sweden. A local guide will provide an intriguing commentary during your journey. From the harbour your canal boat takes you back to the city centre. You then continue to the attractive Botaniska Trädgården – Gothenburg's Botanical Gardens, where you join your guide for a walk. Formerly a forest surrounding a castle, the park was created by August Kobb in the 1880s and has mature linden, oak, ash, maple and cypress trees, a rhododendron valley, a small zoo and a tropical greenhouse.

There are approximately three steps up and three steps down when embarking and disembarking the canal boat. The boat will be uncovered and regrettably is not wheelchair accessible. Expect to walk at least 400 yards in the Botanical Gardens, where you will be on your feet for about 45 minutes.

Vintage Tram Tour and Haga
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
Your tour starts with a coach journey to Masthuggs Church where you can admire sweeping views of Gothenburg and its port. From here, your drive takes you to a tram stop for a ride in one of the city's historic museum tramcars. Gothenburg has a famous network of trams that covers most of the city. With almost one hundred miles of track, it is the largest light rail network in Scandinavia. During the one-hour tram ride, your guide will point out the highlights as you pass through the city centre. Returning to your coach, you drive past Götaplatsen, with the famous Poseidon Fountain by Carl Milles, and also view the Museum of Fine Arts, the concert hall and the municipal theatre. Drive along Avenyn, the main street and the Grand Boulevard of Gothenburg with its large number of restaurants, bars and shops. See the city hall, the courthouse and the stock exchange at Gustaf Adolf Square and drive past the renowned fish market. Reaching the historic Haga quarter, join your guide on a short walk through this district, known for its picturesque cafes. Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and a pastry at one of them before rejoining your coach and travelling back to the pier.

This excursion involves walking approximately 500 yards, partly over cobblestones and slight inclines. The tram offers an authentic vintage transport experience and is accessed by two quite high steps. Warm, layered clothing is recommended.
Southern Archipelago Cruise
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
Step onboard your sightseeing boat, exclusively chartered for Saga guests, and head out into the Gothenburg Archipelago. Approximately 20 large islands and many more uninhabited islands make up the Southern Archipelago. Each island is completely car-free with the permanent residents riding around on golf carts and bicycles. Shortly after departing Gothenburg port, you will pass the landmark of Älvsborgs fortress, located at the entrance to the harbour. See the islands of Vrångö, Styrsö and Brännö – each with the typical West Coast features of a rocky coastline and quaint red wooden houses. During your cruise, your guide will tell you stories of these islands and introduce you to the local way of life here. Continue towards Vinga island, at the western tip of the archipelago and the location of a locally famous lighthouse. Nearby, you may be lucky to see a colony of seals basking on the rocks. Afterwards, enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet pastry as you return to Gothenburg and your ship.

This excursion takes place on a sightseeing vessel with a capacity for approximately 75 passengers. Expect to walk up to 200 yards in each direction between your ship and the sightseeing vessel. There may be some steps or a slopped gangway to embark and disembark and further steps to the upper deck. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Explore Copenhagen on Foot
Walking difficulty: Strenuous Activity
The city of Copenhagen is filled with wonder: from enchanting tales to military symmetry and historical architecture. Begin your walking tour with a photo stop at the Little Mermaid – Copenhagen’s cherished landmark, based on the Hans Christian Andersen story. Hear how her sacrifice to become a human cost her almost everything. Despite the story’s sadness, the city’s mermaid continues to welcome visitors to Copenhagen. Continue along the waterfront to Gefion Fountain – a magnificent, tiered water feature portraying the story of Gefion, the fabled creator of Zealand. Continue to Nyhaven, a colourful district full of Renaissance architecture. Your walk then brings you to Amalienborg Palace, the home to his Majesty King Frederick the 10th of Denmark. Your guide will tell you the story of the palace and the surrounding area that has played a significant role in the Danish history. Finally, take a leisurely walk back to the ship.

As this is a walking tour there will be extensive periods of standing and walking. You should expect to walk at least three miles on this tour. No inside visits are included during this excursion.
The Seaside Town of Dragoer
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
This scenic tour takes you to Dragoer, one of Denmark’s oldest and quaintest fishing villages. Set on Amager Island and lapped by the blue waters of the Øresund, Dragoer is well preserved and has retained its historic character due to the fact that conservation work was started as long ago as 1934. In 1968, parking was prohibited in the entire old district, and in 1978 Dragoer became Denmark’s first ‘pedestrian town’, which is now protected by a local preservation plan. Historically, Dragoer was once an international trading post for Hanseatic merchants, and it became a thriving fishing port during the 16th and 17th centuries. After the herring industry dwindled, the town survived as a major centre for shipping, and is now a friendly place with a fascinating history. Your guide will take you on a leisurely stroll through the cobbled back streets to the bustling harbour. Then you have free time to explore: look around the village, browse for souvenirs in some of the small handicraft shops that line the main street or admire views of Øresund Bridge, which has connected Copenhagen with the Swedish town of Malmö since the year 2000. Refreshments will be served at a hotel by the harbour before you travel back to Copenhagen and your ship.

You will need to walk approximately three-quarters-of-a-mile on this excursion, partly along cobbled streets. There are six steps to access the refreshment venue.
Two Kingdoms in a Morning
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
Leaving the quayside, you travel from Denmark to Sweden by crossing the Øresund Strait, which forms the border between the two countries. Before making the crossing, a short stop allows you to capture photos of this impressive construction. It is the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe. Apart from the main cable-stayed bridge, which is about six miles long, the crossing also includes a two-and-a-half-mile tunnel and an artificial island called Peberholm, which has an area of 325 acres. After a drive of approximately one hour, you reach Malmö. The city has a wonderful contrast of old and new and your visit here will introduce both sides. Stop to take in the view of the towering Twisted Torso skyscraper, which stands beside the waterfront, and then enjoy a short city tour on your coach. Afterwards, you have some free time to visit Malmö’s main square, Stortorget, and the picturesque, cobbled Lilla Torg or Little Square. Finally, return across the Øresund Bridge to Copenhagen.
Additional Information
This tour involves minimal essential walking, as most of the sightseeing will be from the coach. Walking during your free time in Malmö is at your discretion. You should note that there are some cobbled streets in Malmö. Please bring your passport, as you will be crossing an international boundary and there may be a check at the frontier.
Canals of Copenhagen
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
Explore Copenhagen by sea on this one-hour private canal cruise. Embark your canal boat together with your fellow travellers, just a short walk away from your ship. After safety instructions, set off on your cruise through the inner harbours and canals of Christianshavn with its picturesque old buildings. During your cruise, you will see some of the city’s major sights such as Holmen’s Church, the old naval base at Holmen and the old Stock Exchange with its unique spire of entwined dragon’s tails as well as some of the interesting new experimental architecture along the harbour front, such as the new Royal Library. Also sail by Nyhavn, the colourful and lively waterfront district which was once the favourite haunt for sailors dating back to the seventeenth century. Today the canal district is lined with gabled houses, pavement cafes and bars and the fairy tale author Hans Christian Andersen lived at three different addresses along the Nyhavn canal. Try to spot the most cherished landmark of Copenhagen, the famous Little Mermaid statue, watching over the port of Copenhagen. End your cruise back at your starting point and walk back to your ship.
Additional Information
The distance to walk between your ship and the sightseeing vessel will depend on the mooring locations on the day. We estimate this to be approximately 300 yards in each direction with 14 steps to negotiate and you will need to embark and disembark the canal boat independently. Your sightseeing vessel has a covered top but with open sides.
Carlsberg City and Brewery
Walking difficulty: Strenuous Activity
Experience a piece of Danish city architecture and brewery history, beginning with a drive through Copenhagen city centre to the new and exciting urban city district of Carlsberg city.
Join your local guide for a leisurely walk and spend some time exploring the area that once brewed the world-famous Danish beer and today has transformed into an architectural gem that incorporates modern facilities within historic buildings and landmarks. Your guide will take you to some of the main landmarks and will explain their history, including the famous Elephant Gate, the twisted chimney and the lighthouse. Carlsberg city also houses the new Home of Carlsberg visitor centre. The exhibition is housed in some of the original buildings from 1847 that used to belong to the brewery and the family of JC Jacobsen – the founder of Carlsberg. By the late 19th century, the company had gained an international reputation for its beer, which is still going strong today. After a leisurely walk around Carlsberg city you will end up at the visitors centre, where your guide will introduce you to the exhibition, where you will be given an interactive bracelet that can be used throughout the centre. Continue through the centre at your own pace. At the end of your visit, enjoy a beer at the Brewery bar and browse the souvenir shop. Rejoin your local guide and tour vehicle for the return drive back to the ship.
Additional Information
Expect to walk approximately one-and-a-half miles in total during this excursion, with some uneven cobblestone surfaces and gradients outside and steps inside the visitor centre. A good level of physical fitness is required to participate. The visitor centre is an interactive experience, your guide will give a short introduction to the exhibition, but you are then free to walk through at your own pace and the story is told via video displays and exhibits. One beer is included and served after the tour. Guests will receive an interactive bracelet that will unlock interactive features and experiences during the exhibition.
Christianborg Palace and Tivoli Gardens
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
Visit two historic but contrasting attractions during your time in the Danish capital. Begin with a visit to Christianborg Palace and enjoy a guided tour inside. It is the only building in the world to be the seat of all three supreme powers of a nation: the executive, the legislative, and the judicial. A visit is made to the Royal Reception rooms, used by the Danish Queen for entertaining VIP visitors and foreign heads of state. Klaipeda Highlights and Beautiful Amber

Having been formed between 30 and 90 million years ago, amber acts as a translucent window into the world’s ancient past: long before the USSR, the foundation of the city in 1252 and even the first recognisable humans. However, the fossilised plant resin is valuable not only for its pre-historic properties: its beauty is universal, hence its popularity as the centrepiece for fine jewellery. On this tour, discover Klaipeda’s connection to amber and see the many workshops still used to create amber-encrusted jewellery today. Begin with a drive through central Klaipeda, past the ‘Clocks and Watches Museum’, the Gothic Revival post office and the Park of Sculptures. Your guide may point out the abundance of Soviet residential architecture, explaining its ideological importance and why certain materials were used in the building process. Amongst these buildings is one of the biggest amber workshops, staffed by a team of skilled, passionate jewellers who will demonstrate the remarkable process of cutting, polishing and baking the amber. After your visit to the workshops, head to Klaipeda Old Town where the history of the landscape will be told using amber antiques: taste amber tea and Lithuanian cake while learning about the amber trading route which once stretched as far as Rome. Secrets of the Cold War

It was a war unlike any other – one without direct conflict but fuelled by ideology and filled with dramatic, apocalyptic tension. In 1960, as the Americans and USSR competed in the space race, a secret nuclear missile facility was built by hand, deep in the natural, oak-filled landscape of what is now Zemaitija National Park. Today, take a guided tour of the silos for yourself and walk through the military corridors to the control room: perhaps you will understand the intense stress experienced by those that worked here. Leaving the port, travel through wonderful Lithuanian countryside to the clear waters of Lake Plateliai: its clear water provides a fine subject for a photo or two. Continue to the Nuclear Weapon Site, fully restored to bring back to life the realities of the Cold War Period. You will also be shown the propaganda from both sides which fuelled the tensions. Your guide may tell the story of the Cuban Missile Crisis, in which missiles from this site
were transported towards Cuba in a moment often described as the closest point to war that the world came. After your top-secret exploration, travel to a local restaurant to enjoy a selection of traditional Lithuanian dishes accompanied by a local beer or soft drink. Finally, relax as your coach brings you back to Klaipeda.

Best of Bornholm

This is a scenic tour through the picturesque farmlands of the tiny Baltic Island, which belongs to Denmark. Travelling by coach, enjoy the scenery of the coastline on your way to Baltic Seaglass, a few miles outside Gudhjem. This is the largest of the island’s glass blowing studios, located in a converted chicken farm, and nowadays receives between 100,000 and 120,000 visitors a year. Although they mostly design and produce functional glassware, they also create unique works for gallery and museum exhibitions. Following this visit, continue across the island through Almindingen - one of Denmark’s largest forested areas - to reach Østerlars Church, one of the four round churches on Bornholm, where half of all Denmark’s round churches can be found. Visit the church interior before continuing to Hammershus, an old fortress on the northern tip of Bornholm, which today is the largest ruined castle in Northern Europe. The oldest part was built in the early 12th century to consolidate the Archbishop of Lund’s rule of the island. The Swedish city of Lund Danish until 1658, and its archbishop obtained control of Bornholm in 1149 through an agreement with the Danish King, Svend Grathe. For the next 500 years Hammershus was the seat of the island’s rulers, and was rebuilt and extended several times before being finally abandoned in 1743. After leaving Hammershus, continue to the charming village of Allinge, where you visit one of the island’s well-known smokehouses. Here you enjoy local smoked herring and ice-cold beer before the short coach ride back to your ship.

A short stop is then made in Svaneke, a small and picturesque town, although still the second largest town on the island. Finally, drive back along the coastal road to Gudhjem and your ship.

Your excursion begins with a drive to the northwest tip of the Island. Here you will find the ruins of Hammerhus Castle, dating from the 13th century. Pause for a short stop and take in the fine view over the Baltic Sea before you continue to your next stop, the quarry of Vang. Granite has been quarried in Vang for more than 100 years and has supplied stone for German rivers, the Great Belt bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden, and the large expansion of Copenhagen in 1900. Today, the quarry has been transformed into a habitat, where birds are thriving, and visitors can enjoy the unique nature while learning more about the former industry of the island. Continue to Kultippen, a man-made landscape unlike any other on the island. Here, learn about how this area was formed as a result of coal mining nearby, almost a century ago. After a short walk, continue to the middle of the island, where you will find Kræmmerhuset, a property with a unique history and delightful gardens. The building dates back to 1886 and once served as a school. It is surrounded by a unique old garden consisting of several sections. Today, the school functions as a place of craft and design, and the works are displayed throughout the garden. You have a chance to meet the owner and ceramicist Anina Kofod, who has created a beautiful little gem here. Browse the shop which is filled with local produce, before you reboard your coach for the journey back to your ship.

Island Nature Walk

In the centre of Bornholm you will find one of the largest forest areas in Denmark – Almindingen. Centuries of extensive deforestation had all but turned the entire island into a grassy heath with grazing for livestock from all over Bornholm. But
from 1800 onwards trees were planted and the forest re-grown, and today it covers approximately 40 square miles, making it the third-largest forest area in Denmark. Almindingen has several marsh areas with a rich plant and birdlife. Travel by coach from the pier to Rytterknaegten in Almindingen – the highest point on Bornholm, at 532 feet above sea level. Your coach will park close to the viewing tower 'Kongemindet' – a 72 foot-high observation tower built in honor of King Frederik VII, who visited here in 1851. You may climb the tower to enjoy a great view across most of the island. From here, set off on a 90-minute walk through the natural landscape. Ekkodalen (Echo Valley) was formed by ancient tectonic forces that split the rock apart and formed a rift valley with an average width of 200 feet and a total length of seven-and-a-half miles. The valley is now a popular recreational area with many nature trails. Listen for the calls of the nightingale and other species of the plentiful bird population and admire the lush scenery. From Ekkodalen, take a short coach drive to see one of the island's famous round churches. These unique churches are named for their completely circular structures and were a popular type of construction in the 11th and 12th century, when churches not only served as places of worship, but as defensive structures in uncertain times. After a short stop, return to your ship in Gudhjem.

This town, named after a swan, is said to be the culinary capital of the island, and among others is home to chocolate, ice-cream and caramel makers. Enjoy a stroll as your guide points out the many shops in the city square before you enter the local brew house. Sample some beer and learn more about the local production process. Return to your coach for a short drive along the coast to your next stop, at Denmark’s first organic sea buckhorn plantation. The venue is called HØSTET, which translates as harvested, and the owners Camilla and Mads pride themselves on clean ingredients and great taste. The delicious items produced here include a sea buckthorn marmalade, which pairs well with cheese or bread, a juice drink and a sea buckthorn gin. See the plantation that has grown to approximately 3500 plants, sample some of the sea buckthorn products, and hear about how the couple moved from a town north of Copenhagen to start a new life on Bornholm. You begin by leaving the port behind and driving into the countryside, stopping at medieval Bad Doberan Cathedral. Then your drive continues to Rostock, a powerhouse of Soviet manufacturing. During your time driving through the city, you will see plenty of traditional red brick architecture and pass the beautiful city hall. Hard to miss is St Mary’s Church, one of Rostock’s major landmarks, and the remains of the old city walls. Your guide may also highlight the former STASI prison, where more than 4,900 prisoners were held before sentencing for crimes such as attempting to escape East Germany and defamation of the Communist Party. Finally, a short drive will bring you back to Warnemünde and your ship.

UNESCO Wismar - A Baltic Beauty

Leaving the port behind, a short coach transfer brings you to the tramway departure point: trams being a popular mode of transport in Rostock. Step on board your tram, which has been reserved exclusively for Saga guests for a ride into the heart of the city. Your first impression of the city might be one of architectural diversity: modern housing blocks and 19th-century villas fill the suburbs, and in the centre you will find both medieval and 1950s Stalinist constructions. On arrival into the centre, step back in time on an orientation walk through Mecklenburg Vorpommern’s largest city. Your guide will introduce you to Rostock University: founded in 1419 it is the oldest in northern Europe. Stroll along the ‘Kroepeliner Strasse’ and ‘Am Neuen Markt’ to explore quaint shopping streets that have flourished since the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990. Despite being extensively damaged during the Second World War, you will still find Rostock’s centre filled with plenty of historical buildings. Following your walking tour, you will be given some free time to perhaps step inside St Mary’s Church and marvel at its 15th-century astronomical clock. The final leg of your journey is made by boat along the Warnow River. As you sail back to Warnemünde, you will be invited to taste some traditional German beer or sparkling wine.

The Molli and the Minster

Puffing along the tram tracks of Bad Doberan is the narrow-gauge steam train known as ‘Molli’, in operation since 1886. It is perhaps a little surreal to see this impressive piece of industrial history running along the town’s cobbled streets. On this excursion, you have an opportunity to ride the train for yourself and visit one of Germany’s finest red-brick Gothic churches. You begin with a short coach drive through Warnemünde and the surrounding countryside to the Minster of Bad Doberman. Built like an impenetrable castle, this church dates back to the 14th century. Step inside to view the high altar, depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments, and the 700-year-old oak choir stalls. Re-boarding your tour coach, it is then a short transfer to the ‘Molli’ train station where you will board the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast. Take your seats and steam past the area’s forests, villages and through the centre of Bad Doberan. Arriving in Heiligendamm, Germany’s oldest seaside resort dating back to 1793, you re-board your coach and head for a scenic drive to Kuehlungsborn. It is beloved for its fine beaches and known as the crown jewel of the German Riviera. After a brief guided orientation of the centre, discover the secret of the German ‘Strandkorb’ – a roofed wicker beach chair – during leisure time and perhaps dip your toes in the water for a genuine beach feeling. A Walk in Warnemünde

Often unfairly overlooked by visitors, who flock to nearby Rostock, Warnemünde is a quaint fisherman’s town and a seaside retreat for locals. Despite extensive destruction during World War Two, it continues to bustle with Baltic Sea-going charm. We hope that during your walking tour you will discover a little of this charm for yourself. Begin by passing along the promenade lined with one-storey gabled houses towards the heart of Warnemünde. Your guide may direct your attention towards the church that has stood in the centre of town for over 100 years. Capture its red-brick architecture – typical of northern Germany – on your camera before glimpsing the white-sandy beaches that instantly enamour Warnemünde’s summer sunseekers. It is here that you will hear the history of the ‘Strandkorb’: in 1882, local basketmaker Wilhelm Bartelmann was tasked with creating a wicker seat that would protect the occupier from excessive sun and wind. The resulting seats can be seen up and down the Baltic coast! Gaze up at the 102-foot-tall lighthouse, built in 1897, before stopping in a local pub or restaurant to quench your thirst with a refreshing glass of traditional German beer. Return to the ship, perhaps ready to tell your friends all about the subtle charm of Warnemünde.

Silkeborg and the Highland Lakes

In May 1950 an alarming discovery was made in Bjeldskovdal’s marshland. It was a body. At once, those that had found the body alerted the police and an investigation was launched, however after carrying out a post-mortem it became clear that this investigation was better suited to historians: afterall, the body was over 2,000 years old! Today you will find this piece of history, nicknamed ‘Tollund Man’, in Silkeborg Museum, an institution whose primary goal is to ‘investigate and convey the role of man throughout history’. Upon arrival, you are invited to explore the vast collection of artefacts from the stone, bronze and iron ages, as well as those that belong to the Viking era before meeting the Tollund Man for yourself. Discover his story: why was there a rope tied around his neck and how was he found so well preserved? You then continue to ‘Himmelbjerget’, which translated into English (intentionally humorously) means ‘Sky Mountain’. It climbs to 482 feet above sea level and is dubbed a ‘false hill’ by scientists due to being carved out of the landscape by glacial streams during the last ice age. Nonetheless, the views from its ‘summit’ are undeniably impressive, ready to be captured before returning to the ship.

The Renaissance Manor - Gammel Estrup

Meet your local guide in Aarhus and step on board your tour vehicle for a scenic drive to the Renaissance manor of Gammel Estrup. This charming manor nestles in the countryside, surrounded by a double moat. Although the manor was built during the Renaissance period with characteristic large red medieval bricks, excavations have revealed evidence of earlier constructions dating back to 1340. The manor is a family-owned estate with a long and exciting history. One of the owners was Eske Brock, a member of King Christians IV’s council of the realm, who restructured and modernised the manor house. He was one of the richest men of this time in Denmark and is known for his diaries, which contain remarkable insights into the everyday life of a rich nobleman during the reign of Christians IV. After a guided tour through the main castle, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake, made from an old recipe and baked in the manor kitchens large wood-burning oven. Next, take some time to explore on your own, perhaps discover the beautiful baroque garden that surrounds the main building. Vintage Train Ride and the Danish Countryside

Enjoy a unique opportunity to step back in time by taking a trip on a vintage train through some delightful Danish countryside. Furthermore, that vintage journey is enhanced by its exclusivity: Saga has privately chartered the train for its guests. Leaving the quayside, you drive approximately one hour towards the lake highlands of central Jutland, arriving at Bryrup. It is then all aboard your vintage train which will take you through a series of beautiful landscapes, passing the three lakes: ‘Kvindso’, ‘Kulso’ and ‘Snabe Igelso’. It is an authentic piece of Danish history, running on a stretch of the former Horsens-Silkeborg line that was closed in 1968 and lovingly-restored by passionate rail enthusiasts. The 15-minute rail journey is described as ‘the shortest, but most beautiful train ride in all of Denmark’. Arrive at ‘Vrad’s Station’, a delightfully-restored restaurant, for a pastry accompanied by coffee. For those not seated in the restaurant (due to capacity restrictions), you may be seated in a dining carriage which acts as an extended area of the restaurant. Re-board your train for a journey back to your coach. On your way back to the port, your guide will point out some of the city’s architectural splendour: see city hall, the country’s second-oldest university and modern music hall before arriving back at the port.
Additional Information
Essential walking is limited to approximately 200 yards. There will be several large steps to climb when entering and exiting the train. The train is diesel driven, not steam-powered.
Harbour Sightseeing Cruise

Experience Aarhus from the water side and enjoy a sailing on MS Helene. Your local host will meet you on the pier and lead you on a short walk to the boat. Your captain and friendly staff will welcome you on board the modern wheel steamer before you depart on a guided cruise of Aarhus harbour. Listen to the interesting stories about the city's history and development as you sail through the inner harbour, passing Toldboden and continue through the new district to the old marina, home to some beautiful wooden ships. See the city’s new architectural landmarks from the water and look out for marine wildlife along the way. Enjoy a cup of coffee and slice of cake on board, before arriving back at the pier. A short walk will bring you back to your ship.
Additional Information
There will be a walk of approximately 300 yards between your ship and the boat and the same again at the end of your excursion. Embarkation is via a sloped gangway and the boat has indoor seating areas on both the Main and Upper Decks. There are two steps to access to Main Deck and 10 steep steps to access to Upper Deck.
Lillesand: The Jewel of Sørlandet
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
This excursion discovers the very best of the Sørlandet region of Norway, exploring coastal scenery and the pretty town of Lillesand. Begin in Kristiansand, where you will board the sightseeing vessel SS Christiansand for a scenic coastal sailing. Take a seat and admire the scenery as you sail through the archipelago, passing the Lighthouse of Oksøy and typical Norwegian summer cottages. Enjoy a commentary from your guide as you glide past the islands and skerries of Norway's southern coast. After your scenic cruise, board the coach in Marvik and continue to the picturesque waterfront town of Lillesand. Stroll past the traditional, white-painted houses, gardens in bloom and charming alleys. Many houses in Lillesand date from the 18th and 19th centuries, when Lillesand was bustling with maritime activity, due to its sheltered harbour, and it was an important port for shipping timber. Enjoy some time to explore here on your own, strolling along the narrow streets lined with shops, restaurants and galleries. Finally, return via the highway to Kristiansand and your waiting ship.

There is minimal essential walking during this excursion, but you should expect to walk at least 500 yards for a good exploration in Lillesand. The sightseeing boat is a traditional wooden vessel with outside, bench-style seating. Covered seating areas are limited and there are basic restroom facilities on board. Embarking the vessel may involve steps or a sloped gangway.
The WWII Occupation of Kristiansand
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
Gain an insight into the influences of World War Two on Kristiansand while Norway was in the grip of the German Occupation. Meet your knowledgeable guide, then board your tour vehicle at the pier and begin with a visit to Stiftelsen Arkivet, a former Gestapo headquarters. This building gained a grim reputation during the war and the Gestapo prison cells and torture chambers in the basement have been recreated as they existed back then. Arkivet provides a chilling glimpse into some of the horrendous conditions and atmosphere that the prisoners endured during the German Occupation. Your next destination is the Kristiansand Cannon Museum (The Vara Battery), which is an important part of Norwegian military history. The main attraction is a large battery canon built by the Germans to defend the coastline during World War Two. It is the only complete surviving 380mm calibre Krupp gun and, at almost 66 foot in length, weighing 337 tons with a firing
range of 34 miles, it is one of the largest ever built. The large gun casement surrounding the cannon contains bunkers with interesting exhibits displaying artillery, uniforms and materials from World War Two. After this insightful and thought provoking experience, it's time to return to your ship.
Additional Information
Expect to walk approximately 600 yards in total. Stiftelse Arkivet is accessed by several flights of stairs, however a lift is also available. There is uneven terrain and steps at the Cannon Museum and an incline to reach the top of the cannon area. Participants should expect to be on their feet for the duration of this excursion, with the exception of the short coach journeys.
RIB and Hike Adventure
Walking difficulty: Strenuous Activity
Further south west along the coastline of Kristiansand is a collection of small islands looking out across the gateway to the Baltic Sea. In April 1940, after the arrival of German forces, the strategic possibilities of Norway’s defensively exposed southern shores were recognised. Protection was needed and the solution was the fortification of Ny Hellesund, featuring a large battery which could fire up to 7.5 miles. Visit the island and perhaps experience the defensive advantages for yourself after an exciting RIB (rigid inflatable boat) ride! Meet your boat’s skipper a short walk from the ship who will provide the necessary safety equipment, including splash goggles and a life jacket. After a safety briefing, board your boat and set off westwards. Pass towering lighthouses rising from rugged coastline, small islands which are home to plenty of varied wildlife and a section of the Skagerrak Sea before arriving at Ny Hellesund. See the bunkers built upon Germany’s arrival in April 1940 and hike to the summit of this island, for a commanding panorama out across the waterway and along the coast. Re-boarding your boat, your RIB journey back to Kristiansand will take you through the ‘deep sea’ route, providing large waves to ensure an exciting thrill ride!

Due to the steep gradient on the island, walking boots should be worn. As the RIB ride may be turbulent, this tour is not recommended for guests with back problems. You should expect to walk approximately one-and-a-half miles, which will include some steep gradients. Expect high winds when on the water and wear warm clothing as appropriate.
Kristiansand Past and Present
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
Kristiansand, with its distinctive right-angled streets, was founded in 1641 by King Christian IV. Start your excursion with a short drive to the Vest-Agder County Museum to begin a journey of discovery through the architectural and social history of the area. Divided into four sections to reflect each of the different county districts, 30 houses have been moved and re-erected in the museum: these date from the mid-17th century to the 1930s. Concentrating on the farmhouses from Setesdal and Bygaden – a city street with 11 houses moved from the town centre – step back in time for a memorable visit. Leaving the museum, your tour continues via the winding coastal road to Høllen. This charming little seaside town was formerly a fishing village, but is now a popular residential area. Enjoy a short walk here, with your guide, before returning to Kristiansand.

You should expect to walk a total distance of approximately three-quarters-of-a-mile. Some walking at the museum is over uneven ground and on an incline. Several of the museum buildings have high thresholds that you will need to step over.30th May 2024
