Ullapool
Today Spirit of Discovery was in our second Scottish port, Ullapool. We travelled over the top of Scotland taking the Fair Isle channel, and early this morning we came into the very pretty harbour that once boasted the largest herring fishery in the UK. Ashore today were tours that took guests around the Highlands of Scotland. Ullapool being on the mainland on the shores of Loch Broom has ready access to Inverness and the Cairngorms. Loch Ness is also relatively close by.
In the town were the usual staples for a seaside Scottish town, a woollen shop, a shop specialising in a myriad of local whiskies, a pub called ‘The Captain’s Cabin’ and of course a very fine chippy. While savouring their lunch, some crew members snapped this photo of the ship lying to the anchor. Tomorrow we sail to the Isle of Skye where we get to see more signs in Scottish Gaelic as we visit Portree, our last Scottish tender port.
