Spirit of Discovery blog

Dover

23rd July, 2019

Well Ladies and Gentlemen – Captain Nick Sunderland is back!! It’s great to be in command of our fantastic new ship the Spirit of Discovery, after many years of design, yard trips, conveyance, delivery and shakedown. I took over from Captain Burgess this morning and he is going on a well-deserved leave for 2 months. Well we have 895 passengers this cruise and with 518 crew from 27 different nationalities they are going to be very well looked after and pampered!!

A beautiful sunny day here in Dover and plenty of activity on the quayside as we are loading ready for the cruise. We are also loading some extra instruments today – who could that be for – that’s right it is Mr Jools Holland and his band, who have 2 shows scheduled this cruise, tonight and tomorrow night and it will be a full house in the Playhouse I am sure!! My senior team this cruise are Staff Captain Matt, Chief Engineer Mark, Hotel General Manager Dawn and Cruise Director Kayleigh.

When embarkation was complete it was time to do our Passenger Emergency Drill – very important to make sure everyone is fully familiar with our safety procedures. Shortly after completion of the drill it is time to leave our home port and head to Guernsey where we have a great warm day ahead of us and we all are looking forward to that!!

Full ahead to Guernsey, speak to you soon…
