Spirit of Discovery blog

Key West

22nd December, 2019

A bit of a windy day here in the Everglades area, if we have winds they tend to blow right across from the Gulf Of Mexico with no lee. I was confident in the mighty Spirit of Discovery and she made her way into the shipping channel and then alongside the Mallory Pier area, which is the best spot in town.

Quite showery today (get the umbrellas out) and windy but this did not stop the majority of our guests. The Royal Caribbean Cruise ship due in the same day cancelled due to the weather so this made our guests even more determined to go ashore and to say at least they have been here!

Key West is home to the Southernmost part of contiguous United States and sits at the base of the Interstate 1 highway (US Route 1) which is the longest north/south road in the USA.

Key West is beautiful, especially in the old town area, with many nice shops, restaurants and bars. Many of our guests and crew loved it today – even though they got a little wet!! Never mind…

5pm and time to sail, I had hoped the wind would reduce a little but in the exit channel it was still there – never mind – full steam ahead and we will be fine.

Next stop Miami – I know many excited crew and guests alike as we continue our adventure up the Florida coast.
