Discover the lush scenery of São Miguel Island on this panoramic drive. Pass through the western part of Ponta Delgada via the coastal route, before arriving at Feteiras, where the road climbs to Sete Cidades. You make a stop for photographs at the extinct crater of Sete Cidades, some 1,900 feet above sea level. From the edge of the crater, eight miles in circumference, there is a fine view of the two lakes at the bottom. One is deep blue, reflecting the sky, and the other is bright green, reflecting the rich vegetation of the lush crater walls. On your return drive to Ponta Delgada, another short photo stop will be made at Carvão Belvedere.

Admire the unique crater lakes of Sete Cidades before visiting the striking Antonio Borges Botanical Garden in the heart of Ponta Delgada. Leaving the port along the coastal road through the western part of the city, you will pass through picturesque villages before arriving at Feteiras. The route ascends towards Sete Cidades, leading to the main crater of this extinct volcano, rising 1,900 feet above sea level. From the edge of this crater, eight miles in circumference, you can enjoy a view of the twin lakes below. One shimmers a deep blue and the other glows a bright green, reflecting the rich vegetation of the lush crater walls.

Your drive continues as you return to Ponta Delgada to visit the Antonio Borges Botanical Garden. After an introduction from your guide, you are free to take a stroll at your leisure in this peaceful paradise. Discover the varied collection of European and tropical trees, and the caves and ponds that are dotted throughout the garden. Alternatively, you can relax in the entrance cafe. Finally, return to your coach for the drive back to the port.

Please note: You will spend approximately 45 minutes at Antonio Borges Botanical Gardens. Walking here is entirely at your discretion, but you should expect to cover at least 500 yards. Views of the Crater Lakes are weather dependent.

Take a snapshot tour from Funchal, with three photo stops.

Leave the port, passing Santa Catarina Park, and travel west towards the Santa Rita area, before arriving at your first photo stop offering a view of Funchal. Your drive continues to your second photo stop at Pico dos Barcelos. This viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the coastline, surrounding hills and the city. Next, drive southwest, passing Câmara de Lobos, a picturesque fishing village, once painted by Sir Winston Churchill. Pause for a photo at Pico da Torre viewpoint, which offers a window onto the bay and fishermen’s village below. Having seen Funchal and its surroundings from three viewpoints, you head back to your ship.

After a short coach transfer, you will arrive at the Botanical Gardens nestled in the verdant hills overlooking Madeira’s capital. Once the grounds of a private estate, these gardens are now one of the island’s most celebrated attractions. Spread across five hectares, the garden showcases more than 2000 species of plants from every continent, some endangered in their native habitats, alongside a wealth of Madeira’s own flora. On arrival, you will be free to explore independently, wander at your own pace and take in the fragrance of blossoming flowers and the vibrant palette of greens, reds, yellows and purples. Each step unveils new wonders, including viewpoints that offer sweeping vistas of Funchal and the island’s coastline.

Please note: You must be physically fit to participate in this excursion due to the terrain and high number of steps. This is not a guided tour, you will have approximately one-and-three-quarter hours to explore the Botanical Gardens independently. Expect to walk up to one mile over uneven ground with cobblestones, inclines and steps to negotiate. Within the gardens there are approximately 100 steps. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. The gardens are not wheelchair accessible.

Stroll through Funchal’s old town and visit the market on this introductory walk.

Begin with a short transfer by coach to the old town where, on arrival, you will set off on foot for a leisurely stroll with your guide past the public gardens to Santa Maria Street. Renowned for its painted doors, here you can learn more about the painted doors project from your guide. Next, head to the local farmers market where stalls are brimming with tropical fruit, flowers, fish and regional products. While at the market you can taste a traditional Pastel del Nata, Portugal’s beloved custard tart. Afterwards, return to your ship by coach.

The short walk through the old town will take approximately 30 minutes, followed by approximately one hour to explore the market. The coach transfer will take approximately 15 minutes each way. Take in the highlights and views of La Palma on a scenic drive.

Beginning from the pier in Santa Cruz de la Palma, your drive takes you firstly to the Mirador de la Concepcion, pausing for photos at this viewpoint before continuing to the visitor centre of Caldera de Taburiente. After stopping at the visitor centre, drive to Mirador de La Cumbrecita, where you will stop for photos at the look out. Then, continue the drive to the western part of La Palma, through Los Llanos de Aridane, surrounded by cacti and banana plantations, before returning to your ship via the town of El Paso.

Please note: This is a coach-based excursion with most of the sightseeing taking place from your vehicle. At each photo stop expect to walk approximately 150 yards. You will spend approximately 15 minutes at Mirador de la Concepcion, 30 minutes at the visitor’s centre and 30 minutes at Mirador de La Cumbrecita. The drive involves travelling on steep, winding roads – vertigo sufferers should take this into consideration. Visibility from the viewpoints is dependent on the weather and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

Visit La Laguna Market before driving through northern Tenerife, pausing at Humboldt viewpoint for a short photo stop.

Departing from the pier, head along avenue Santa Cruz known as ‘Las Ramblas’, passing by the now disused bullring and Parque García Sanabria. Next, head towards San Cristóbal de La Laguna, where you will have approximately 30 minutes to explore the historic market officially known as Mercado Municipal de La Laguna. The drive continues east pausing for a drink at Bodegas Alvaro, before reboarding your coach and travelling to Humboldt viewpoint. Pause here for a short photo stop to take in the view of the coastline, the Orotava Valley and, on a clear day, perhaps even see Mount Teide. Afterwards, return to your ship.

Please note: This tour includes a scenic drive, a 30-minutes stop at La Laguna Market for time at leisure and a 15-minute photo stop. There is an essential walk of 350 yards required, with any additional walking at the market at your discretion. The Christ Church in La Laguna is not always open due to festivities and services. At the bodega you will stop for approximately 15 minutes to sample a small glass of wine. The tour may operate in a different order to described, so your visit to La Laguna may be at the beginning or end of the tour.

Departing from the pier, your coach will climb up towards the Esperanza Forest area, featuring Canarian pine and eucalyptus trees, as you make your way to La Tarta viewpoint to pause for a short photo stop. Next, journey south along the base of the mountain range, through more pine forests and the foothills to Teide National Park, declared a national park in 1954. The park features a vast volcanic crater measuring over 29 miles in circumference and within it is Mount Teide, rising to a height of 12,000 feet. It is the highest peak in Spanish territory and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The park is situated at an altitude of over one mile above sea level: in winter, snow and gale force winds often close roads through it; during the summer months, the arid landscape gives visitors the impression of having walked onto the set of a western movie and can reach temperatures of over 37°C. Pause for a refreshment at Bambi Restaurant, before heading further into the national park. Stand in the shadows of the majestic Roques de García as you pause for a photo stop. Then it is time to make the return journey to your ship in Santa Cruz.

Please note: Expect to walk at least 500 yards, over some uneven surfaces. There may be a considerable amount of standing. We recommend that you take an extra layer of clothing as temperatures may be considerably colder than at sea level. The drive to the first viewpoint will take approximately one hour. The duration of each stop is between 15 and 30 minutes. The return drive to the ship will take approximately one and half hours. Enjoy a snapshot tour of Lanzarote to see Teguise, Caleta Famara Beach and Aloe Vera Farm. Travel from the pier inland to the historic town of Teguise, founded in the 15th century by the Conquistadores. On days when there is no market, you will be able to admire the beautifully restored houses and picturesque square during a short stop. Next, continue to Caleta Famara Beach, which Lanzarote artist César Manrique frequented as a child. A short photo stop will be made here.

Next, the drive takes you through the charming, typical Canarian villages of Soo, La Santa, Tinajo, Tiagua, and Mozaga. You will then pass through the La Geria wine region, famous for its unique, ash-covered landscape where grapevines are grown in volcanic hollows. Your final stop is at an Aloe Vera Farm, where you will have approximately 30 minutes to learn about the island's celebrated Aloe Vera, which thrives in Lanzarote's volcanic soil and is used in numerous ways. After your farm visit, you will return directly to the ship.

Explore Playa Blanca at your own pace. Playa Blanca is a popular resort situated on Lanzarote’s south coast. After a 45-minute transfer you will arrive in Playa Blanca where you will have approximately four-and-a-half hours of free time. Perhaps wander around the marina, walk along the promenade and stop for a drink and a bite to eat at a bar or cafe overlooking the Atlantic. After your visit, meet at the designated time and place for the return transfer to the port.

Leaving the port, drive past the Jerónimos Monastery, built using limestone over a period of 100 years starting in 1501; UNESCO-listed Belém Tower, constructed with the primary objective of protecting the bay; the Monument to the Discoveries; the pink façade of Belém Palace, the official residence of the Portuguese president; the new Coach Museum; Avenida da Liberdade, the most central avenue in Lisbon and a popular shopping district for both tourists and locals; and Edward VII park. 

You will also cross the 25th April suspension bridge over the Tagus River to see the imposing statue of Cristo Rei, Christ Statue of Lisbon. Stretching across the estuary to the Tagus River in Lisbon the suspension bridge is considered as a twin sister of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco because of its similar design. 

The bridge is an impressive sight, and it also offers a breathtaking view when crossing it. Visible from most parts of Lisbon and beyond, the statue of Cristo Rei stands a striking 270 feet high on its angular pedestal, overlooking the south bank of the Tagus River. One of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks standing tall with its robed arms outstretched, it was erected in 1959 and modelled on the famous Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro. Then, enjoy your scenic drive back to the port.

This is a coach-based excursion with most of the sightseeing taking place from your vehicle. Any walking at any short photo stop will be at your discretion. Lisbon is a busy city with ongoing roadworks. The duration of this tour is dependent on traffic conditions and the tour may operate in a different to described. Dependent on traffic conditions on the day, you may have a photo stop at the Top of Edward VII Park instead of crossing the 25th April bridge to see the Cristo Rei.

Starting from the pier your guide will take you to the lower section of the Alfama district, through the labyrinth of narrow cobbled alleyways, passing by the Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa), which was built in the 12th century, here you will have an exterior view before continuing to Figueira and Restauradores squares on your way to Rossio, once the liveliest square in the city. You can see the exterior of the Dona Maria National Theatre before continuing to Rua Augusta and Praça do Comércio, also known as “Black Horse Square”, named after the statue of King José I which has a central position. Having explored the sights of downtown Lisbon you will return to your ship.

For calls to Lisbon on the 3rd and 17th December: At the end of your walking tour you can opt to stay in Lisbon City Centre and enjoy Rossio Christmas Market. The market is located within a short distance from the shuttle bus service pick up point. Your local guide will provide you with all the details.

Traditionally a fishing village, Cascais began to rise in prominence in 14th Century when it became a major stopping point for boats on their way to Lisbon.

Cascais became a very popular summer resort, driven by the king of Portugal, Dom Luís I, who in 1870, converted the Fortaleza da Cidadela into the summer residence of the Portuguese Monarchy. The Kings example was immediately copied by the nobility, who built palaces and grand villas in the town, where they spent the hottest season of the year, completely transforming the appearance of the former fishing village.

During your free time, we recommend a stroll through the town’s streets, where you can browse the local shops or enjoy a coffee in one of the many outdoor cafes. Cascais also offers the Castro Guimarães Museum, the Boca do Inferno cliffs, the beachfront promenade, the Mercado da Vila market, and the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego art gallery.

For calls to Lisbon on the 3rd and 17th December: We would like to advise that during your visit to Cascais on these dates there will be a Christmas Village in Cascais. This takes place at the Parque Marechal Carmona, located approximately 850 metres from the coach drop off. The Christmas Village hosts several attractions including carousels, a Christmas market and plenty of seasonal fun. Guests can visit the Christmas Village independently during their free time in Cascais. Please note, guests who would like to visit will have to pay an entrance fee, the cost of this is not yet advertised. Once you board your cruise we should have more information on opening times and entrance fees of the Christmas village.

Begin with a visit to one of the island’s main pineapple plantations, where you can try locally-produced liqueurs before continuing to Ribeira Grande, the oldest and largest town on the north coast. From here, stop at Santa Iria Belvedere for dramatic views of the coast, and then continue to Pico de Ferro which overlooks the magnificent Furnas Valley.

A huge crater filled with diverse vegetation, beautiful lakes and spectacular geysers, the Furnas Valley is an integral part of local traditions and this is where people would bury sealed pots in the earth, waiting for the natural warmth to cook their meal of mixed meats and vegetables, known as ‘cozido’. Continue to the stunning Terra Nostra Gardens, an enchanting park laid out more than 200 years ago in the style of an English garden. Afterwards enjoy lunch at the adjacent Terra Nostra Casino.

After lunch, visit the extraordinary Hot Springs, where no fewer than 23 mineral springs spout boiling water into a sulphur-laden atmosphere. On your return drive to Ponta Delgada, pass through the island's former capital, Vila Franca Do Campo, now one of the principal tourist centres of the Azorean Archipelago.

Please note: There is approximately 200 yards of walking over uneven terrain at the Hot Springs. The walks in Ribeira Grande and through the Terra Nostra Park are both optional and each involves a further walk of approximately 500 yards, which is partly over cobbles and uneven terrain. Anyone not wishing to join the walk at Terra Nostra Park can wait in the hotel lobby, which has a shop and wc facilities.

Please bring swimwear and a towel, we recommend wearing and easily removable footwear, such as flip-flops too if you would like to swim in the thermal pool. Changing rooms are available. The water in the thermal pool can dye swimwear, therefore it is not recommended to wear your best. Views will vary according to the weather. Dietary requests must be advised to the Explore Ashore Team on board ship at least 72 hours prior to arrival.

Furnas Valley was once a huge volcanic crater which erupted in 1630. Today, it is an oasis of lush greenery, showcasing both exotic and native flora. On this tour, pass into the volcanic landscape towards the largest botanical garden in the Azores – Park Terra Nostra, an area made popular by the health properties contained within the mineral water here. Here, a short walking tour will allow you to appreciate the wide range of plants that grow in the volcanic soil and for those who wish, there will be an opportunity to swim in the thermal warm water pool.

Continue towards the Caldeiras: an area still experiencing volcanic phenomena today (many restaurants in the area choose to cook their meals using the volcanic heat). Leaving the valley behind, continue north, past an abundance of impressive views across seemingly inaccessible landscape before arriving at the oldest tea garden in Europe – Chá Gorrean. Here, learn the process of tea production by visiting the factory and museum (which displays machinery from the 19th century), before enjoying a cup of cha (tea) for yourself and a slice of homemade pineapple cake. Leaving the tea garden, enjoy a scenic drive back to your ship.

Begin with a drive from west to east across São Miguel Island to Furnas Valley. This is where your walk begins. This is one of the richest hydrological areas in Europe, boasting 22 thermal springs. Walking on unpaved roads and trails, you will pass through dense and lush vegetation to arrive at beautiful viewpoints along the way.

The scent of sulphur mingles with the perfume of flowers, and the cold, transparent waters of the streams mix with the boiling water, made golden by the iron contained within. The land surrounding Furnas Lake is dominated by farms, pastures and the great slopes of the volcanic crater. Fields are edged with Japanese red cedars, hydrangeas and the kahiki ginger.

Finally you reach Furnas Hot Springs, an area of diverse volcanic activity where water and mud geysers spout and boil. From the Hot Springs you will return by coach to Ponta Delgada.

Please note: Expect to walk up to two miles during this excursion, some of which will be on uneven paths and up gentle slopes. No refreshments are served during this excursion and we recommend bringing your own.

Enjoy a scenic drive through Ponta Delgada and across the island to Ribeira Grande, the oldest and largest town on the north coast, with a strong Portuguese influence. Here you will have time to explore the town square and church with a guide, or do some independent sightseeing.

Continue along the mountain roads to Pico Da Barrosa Mountain where you can see breathtaking views of Fire Lake, which is set in a volcanic crater and said to be one of the most beautiful on the island.

Your return journey to Ponta Delgada takes you towards Remedios in the south via Lagoa and a pineapple plantation, where you can sample the pineapple liqueur.

Please note: There is approximately 120 yards walking at the pineapple plantation. For those passengers wishing to explore Ribeira Grande with the guide there is a further 600 yards of walking. You are advised to bring a warm jumper as it can get cold in the mountains. Views will vary according to the weather.

Climb onto a 4x4 vehicle and head off-road, along old tracks and crossing small streams, before pausing to relax beside the crystal-clear waters. You will discover the island of São Miguel with vehicles well suited to its terrain, discovering unusual panoramas and an unspoilt wilderness far away from the city.

The rugged mountains are covered by indigenous trees, hydrangeas and other types of vegetation that contrast with the soft green valleys below with their sparkling streams and small villages. You can see how the locals live and work the rich farmland in communion with nature.

Please note: This tour involves approximately three-quarters-of-a-mile of walking, and a certain degree of agility is required in order to climb on board the jeeps. The drive will be bumpy at times, therefore please consider its suitability if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. Go in search of the whales and dolphins in the sea surrounding Madeira in an RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat).

After a short transfer to the marina, there will be a briefing before your adventure begins. Then you will set off on your RIB adventure, fully equipped for observing a variety of marine life. Thanks to lookouts on land who will guide your boat towards the mammals, which may include Short-finned Pilot Whales, Bottlenose Dolphins, Atlantic Spotted Dolphins and Common Dolphins that often leap from the water displaying their acrobatic moves as they swim alongside the boats. If you are lucky, you may also spot a Risso’s Dolphin, a Beaked Whale or an Orca, all of which are occasional visitors to Madeira.

You must be able to climb in and out of the RIB unaided. Dexterity is required to get on and off the high-positioned seats. The RIB will provide a thrilling, bouncy and sometimes physically demanding experience that combines speed, motion and exposure to sea conditions, therefore please consider the suitability of this excursion if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. Lifejackets are supplied, but you must wear your own warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy nonslip shoes. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. This tour has limited capacity. The transfer from the port to the marina of Funchal will take approximately 15 minutes each way. There is no comfort stop during excursion.

The route the vehicles take is subject to weather conditions across the island, and your driver will give you a detailed itinerary on the day. Throughout this tour, you will have ample opportunities to discover and learn about the island’s native flora and fauna, including the Laurissilva forest. If conditions allow, you travel off road through mountains, across small rivers and along valleys, capturing scenic views of the island along the way. Towards the end of the drive, you will pause and enjoy a refreshment before returning to your ship.

Follow the course of the Levada do Norte from Ribeira Brava to Quinta Grande.

Walking a ‘Levada’ trail is one of the most enjoyable ways of exploring Madeira. These irrigation channels were created in the 19th century by the Portuguese settlers, who painstakingly carved them out of the rock by hand. Designed to carry fresh water from the north to the drier southern regions of the island, they helped to create many of the lush landscapes that can be seen today. Departing from the pier travel to Ribeira Brava where you will begin the walk following the Levada do Norte route to Quinta Grande.

After walking for approximately two-and-a-half hours, head to a nearby bar to taste poncha, a traditional Madeiran alcoholic drink made with aguardente de cana, honey, sugar, and juice before returning to your ship in Funchal.

Please note: This tour requires walking of at least four miles over uneven terrain with frequent steps. You should be physically fit to participate, and we recommend that you wear walking boots. Leave Funchal and travel west to the Pico da Torre viewpoint from where you can see Câmara de Lobos and the surrounding landscape. Next, the drive continues inland through the mountains to Eira do Serrado. Palheiro Gardens was originally established in the early 19th century as a hunting lodge for the Count of Carvalhal, the estate was acquired by the Blandy family in 1885. Since then, generations of the Blandy family have nurtured and expanded the gardens. On arrival to the gardens, stroll with your guide through the different themed sections of the gardens. Today, Palheiro Gardens is home to a collection of rare trees, exotic plants, and vibrant flowerbeds, including centuries-old camellias, towering African tulip trees, proteas, azaleas, and jacarandas. Herbs, such as mint, lemongrass and lemon verbena, are grown in the garden and feature in the fresh herbal teas served in the tea house.

Enjoy a boat ride along the coast of Tazacorte in search of whales, dolphins and other marine life.

Leaving the pier, journey west across the island to the small fishing village of Tazacorte. Here, you will embark the boat and set off in search of marine life. A number of different whale species, including pilot whales, and several species of dolphins can be spotted off the coast of La Palma. Head off the beaten track in a 4x4 bus to explore the island’s volcanic vistas, shaped by volcanic activity over the past century.

Board your 4x4 bus at the pier and head towards the hills of Las Breñas, crossing thick vegetation and looking over Cumbre Nueva, the island’s main mountain range. Continue into the mountains, across the National Park and on towards the Refugio del Pilar, until you reach the Mirador del Jable viewpoint. From this natural balcony enjoy a panoramic view of the Aridane Valley, the Caldera del Taburiente and the Cumbre Nueva hills. Seek out whales and dolphins on board a catamaran in the waters of southern Tenerife.

Leaving the pier, travel for one-and-a-quarter hours by coach to the harbour of Puerto Colon, in Playa des Las Americas. On arrival, board the catamaran and go in search of whales and dolphins. Pilot and sperm whales swim in the waters around Tenerife all year round and you may also see dolphins or other species of whales if you are lucky. During the catamaran trip, drinks will be served and you will have some free time to swim if you wish or sunbathe on the Catamarans netting. After spending approximately three hours on the catamaran you return to the ship by coach.

Please note: The boat used during this excursion is not exclusive to Saga guests and this tour is unguided. Minimal walking is required but there are approximately eight steps to negotiate when getting on and off the catamaran, which you need to be able to do unaided. Enjoy a cable car ride to the summit of Mount Teide for an aerial view of Cañadas del Teide National Park.

Setting off from Santa Cruz your drive will take you through the Esperanza Forest and on to the National Park. On reaching the cable car station at approximately 7700 feet above sea level, a short stop will be made to admire the view before boarding the cable car. Be sure to have your camera close to hand during this eight-minute ride to the mountain’s 12,198-foot summit. You have some free time here to take in the vista of sprawling mountains punctuated by rugged petrified rock. Then, return to the lower station to rejoin your coach for a scenic drive that takes in again this unique island’s countryside, before finally arriving back at the port.

Head to Puerto de la Cruz to visit two gardens: Jardin Botanico and Orchid Gardens of Sitio Litre.

First, take a drive along the island’s main highway to Puerto de la Cruz, an old colonial town on the north coast. The first garden you visit is the Jardin Botanico, founded by a Royal decree of King Charles III of Spain in 1788. He wanted to create a nursery where plants, shrubs and flowers, brought by the Conquistadors from the New World, could acclimatise to Spanish soil. Many of the plants here are the original specimens, delivered shortly after the opening of the garden. The centrepiece is a huge South American fig tree whose branches and roots have created an outlandish treehouse.

Next, a short drive brings you to the Orchid Gardens of Sitio Litre, which have welcomed many distinguished visitors including the famous crime writer Agatha Christie. These tranquil gardens are bursting with colour and have the largest collection of orchids in the Canary Islands. Here, enjoy tea or coffee with a pastry and perhaps browse the shop. Afterwards, enjoy some time at leisure in Puerto de la Cruz before the return drive to Santa Cruz.

Explore the Pyramids of Güímar, a complex of six terraced structures made from lava stones, before visiting the Basilica de Candelaria.

Leave the pier and head to the Pyramids of Güímar. The Ethnographic Park was founded in 1998 by the renowned Norwegian researcher Thor Heyerdahl. The site features a complex of six terraced, rectangular structures constructed from lava stones without mortar, which resemble step pyramids.

You will tour this ancient site before heading to Candelaria to visit the Basilica de Candelaria, the first Marian Shrine of the Canary Islands. Built in the Moorish-influenced Mudejar style, the basilica is home to the Virgin of Candelaria, declared the island's patron saint in 1599.

Set off on a drive through north Tenerife towards the Orchid Gardens. En route, you will pass through Oratava Valley, pausing for a photo stop at the Humboldt Viewpoint to take in the view of the coastline, the Orotava Valley and on a clear day perhaps even Mount Teide. The viewpoint is named after the explorer and naturalist Alexander Humboldt, who visited the island in 1799. He also visited the garden that previously stood on the site of what is now the Orchid Gardens, established in 1774 and the oldest on the island. In their company, explore the garden with its water feature, Dragon Tree, believed to be over 400 years old, and of course the collection of orchids, housed and displayed in a curving walkway. Departing from the pier, travel to the north of Lanzarote to visit the Jameos del Agua Cave. César Manrique turned what was once a water hole in the earth’s surface into an inspiring volcanic cavern and exotic subterranean water garden, Jameos del Agua. On arrival, you descend into the cavern via a winding staircase leading down to the underground, natural lake. This underground lake is slightly illuminated by the sun and is home to the blind albino crab, which are unique to Lanzarote. After your visit inside the cavern, you walk along the volcanic path to the surface where you can see the crystal blue waters of the swimming pool, a backdrop for many visitor’s photos.

Reboard your coach and head to Mirador del Rio, a viewpoint located 1640 feet above a cliff. This is one of the most unique architectural creations by César Manrique where you can capture a panoramic view of Lanzarote and the Chinijo Archipelago. Before returning to Arrecife, enjoy a visit to an Aloe Vera Farm, tucked away in the village of Orzola.

Visit the charming town of Sintra, where you can admire many stunning buildings and works of art. The whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its 19th-century romantic architecture. On arrival you will visit Sintra National Palace, also known as Palácio da Vila, famous for its magnificent painted ceilings. The palace is the only survivor of the country's Royal Halls, dating from the Middle Ages. One of the highlights is its kitchen, complete with huge 110-feet high conical chimneys.

After your visit to the palace, stop for a sweet treat, and then enjoy free time to explore on your own. The town has retained much of its medieval layout, with labyrinthine streets, flights of steps and arcaded buildings. On your return journey to the ship you will follow a section of the scenic ocean road, and pass the Belém district with its famous tower.

Please note: During the visit to Sintra Palace there will be one hour of standing and essential walking covering approximately 550 yards. There are approximately 120 steps and a winding staircase inside the palace. Walking during time at leisure is at your discretion, but please note Sintra Town has cobbled streets, steps and inclines. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. A good level of fitness is required to participate on this tour. The drive to Sintra will take approximately one hour, the return drive to the ship will take one-and-a-half hours. You will have approximately one hour at the Sintra National Palace, followed by free time.

Leaving the port, your journey by coach takes you over the 25th April bridge and on a scenic drive to Sesimbra, an old fishing village which lies at the foothills of the Serra da Arrábida mountain range. The village is lined with traditional whitewashed houses, overlooked by Sesimbra’s Moorish Castle. Enjoy an exterior visit of the castle for approximately 30 minutes before the tour continues by coach to Azeitão. Azeitão is located in the nature reserve of the Serra da Arrábida and is known for its tasty regional products.

During your time in the area, you will visit one of the local wine cellars and have the opportunity to taste the Moscatel wines. The tour concludes with a scenic drive through Arrábida Natural park before returning to the ship.

Please note: This tour includes two visits: one to the exterior of Sesimbra Castle, where walking is over uneven ground, but is at your discretion, and the second is to a winery, where 350 yards of essential walking is required over uneven ground with up to 40 steps, with one staircase that is particularly steep with a handrail. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. The order of sights may vary. The drive to Sesimbra Castle will take approximately one hour. The return drive to the ship will take approximately two hours.
