Follow the trail of the Mediterranean’s great civilisations past and present on this all-inclusive cruise to the eastern Mediterranean in 2027, with opportunities to explore ancient archaeological sites such as Pompeii, the Acropolis and the Pyramids of Giza.
See the influences of ancient Roman civilisations in Salerno, on Italy’s Tyrrhenian coast, and visit the Turkish town of Kusadasi, gateway to ancient Ephesus. From Pireaus, head to Athens, ‘The Cradle of Western Civilisation’, where the city is overlooked by Athen’s crowning achievement, the UNESCO-listed Acropolis.
Cruise to Limassol on the southern coast of Cyprus, an island where historic attractions include Limassol Castle, the archaeological sites of Kourion and Kolossi, and the UNESCO-listed Tombs of the Kings. An overnight visit to Alexandria is sure to be a highlight and it offers the opportunity to visit the Pyramids of Giza and The Grand Egyptian Museum, and El Alamein on a choice of optional excursions.
More relics await in Heraklion, with its Venetian and Turkish fountains, and Valletta, home to forts built by the Knights of St John in the 16th century. This action-packed cruise concludes with a visit to Malaga, home to impressive Moorish citadels.

Watching over the entrance to the Mediterranean, stands the unmistakable limestone Rock of Gibraltar. At its base lies Gibraltar which is connected to the end of the Iberian Peninsula by a sandy isthmus and offers an intriguing blend of British and Spanish culture. Discover Gibraltar’s Palladian architecture and typically British sights, such as red pillar boxes and familiar highstreet chains.
Alternatively, visit the military museum or ascend the limestone monolith by cable car for panoramic views and to meet the mischievous Barbary macaques. From the top of the Rock you can look out over two continents: Africa lies just 13 miles to the south, whilst Europe stretches to the north.

Mahon, capital of Minorca, lies in a sheltered natural harbour. The rocky shoreline is dotted with elegant Georgian-style architecture, a throwback to its period of 18th-century British occupation. The museum in Fort Marlborough offers a look back at this era. Other attractions close by include 19th-century Mola Fortress, built to prevent the return of the British, and Far de Favaritx lighthouse.

This once Roman town has an idyllic setting on the Tyrrhenian Sea and is a gateway to the Amalfi Coast and the city of Pompeii. During the 11th century, Salerno was known far and wide for its leading School of Medicine. One of the school’s most prominent physicians, Matteo Silvatico, grew medicinal plants on the terraced slopes of Minerva Gardens. These medieval gardens were a forerunner of botanical gardens and offer a cool retreat in the heart of the city.

This large resort town on Turkey’s western Aegean coast is popular for its beaches and shops, and it also offers a gateway to the classical ruins of Ephesus. Among the Greek and Roman ruins of this UNESCO-listed ensemble is the great Library of Celsus and an amphitheatre built to seat around 24, 000 people.

‘The Cradle of Western Civilisation’, ancient Athens was the birthplace of democracy as well as a crucible of creativity, leading to great advances in philosophy, art, literature and architecture. This is represented by Athen’s crowning achievement, the UNESCO-listed Acropolis. The exceptional well-preserved 5th-century BC complex watches over the city from a rocky outcrop and encompasses the monumental Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaia and the temple of Athena Nike. In its lee sprawls the old Plaka neighbourhood packed with tavernas, cafes and small shops.

With a core full of character and an eastern resort area that has been popular with holidaymakers for decades, Limassol offers visitors a little bit of history, a lot of modern comfort and access to many of the island’s must-see attractions.
It was at Limassol Castle that Lionhearted King Richard I of England married Queen Berengaria following his impromptu invasion of Cyprus in 1191. Surrounding the castle, you will find a medieval centre of pedestrianised streets, ancient mosques, Greek Orthodox churches and boutique-lined boulevards.
From Limassol you can explore the archaeological sites of Kourion and Kolossi, or venture further afield to Paphos, home to the UNESCO-listed Tombs of the Kings.

Alexandria, Egypt’s second-largest city, has a thriving port along its 20-mile coastline. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, the city was home to the Library of Alexandria, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Alexandria has many buildings of historic interest from 15th-century Citadel of Qaitbay overlooking the Mediterranean to the vast Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque. Numerous archaeological treasures can be found within the city’s museums, such as the Alexandria National Museum which contains over 1,800 priceless pieces.

Named after Hercules, the capital of the Greek island of Crete has an extensive history stretching over 5,000 years. Once under Arabic, Venetian and Ottoman rule, both the island’s landscape and Heraklion itself are dotted with ancient relics that reveal more of its fascinating past.
As you explore the charming backstreets hidden behind the fortification walls, look out for beautiful Venetian and Turkish fountains scattered across the city. You can choose to uncover more of Crete’s history on a visit to the Palace of Knossos, court of the legendary King Minos whose wife Pasiphae gave birth to the Minotaur, half-bull, half-man. The Heraklion Archaeology Museum, which is regarded as one of the most important museums in Greece, is also a must-see attraction.
