Discover the island charms of Corsica and Sardinia
Enjoy an all-inclusive cruise to the Mediterranean in 2026. Experience the vibrant blend of cultures in the souks of Tangier. Then, contrast the traditional charms of Minorca with the medieval walled city of Alghero in Sardinia, and the rugged landscapes of Elba, dotted with hilltop villages and castles.
Continue to the west coast of Tuscany to step ashore in Livorno, founded in the 11th century to protect Pisa. Its old town features a latticework of canals and fortifications, such as Fortezza Nuova – other notable attractions include the restored Duomo and the checkerboard promenade. Italian influences can also be found on the island of Corsica, particularly within the culture and dialect of the locals. In the Andalusian city of Almeria see highlights such as the crenellated cathedral, neoclassical San Pedro church and impressive hilltop citadel.
While Lisbon, Portugal’s lively capital, is known for its vintage trams, UNESCO-listed landmarks and tempting pastel de nata.

The history of this Moroccan port on the Strait of Gibraltar, just 20 miles from the Spanish coast, goes back to the ancient Greeks and its beginnings are embedded in mythology. It is believed to have taken its name from Tingis, the daughter of Atlas, the mythical supporter of the Heavens. It was later ruled by the Romans and Arabs while Spain, Portugal, France and England also played important parts in the city’s diverse history. The city lies on a bay between two promontories and you can enjoy superb panoramic views if you head up to the ancient Kasbah, a former military fortress now full of elegant buildings and architecture while the Medina – the oldest part of town – is a warren of cobbled streets boasting a chronology of architectural styles charting the city’s colonial history. Perhaps sip a mint tea at a pavement cafe and watch the chaos of everyday life unfold around you.

Mahon, capital of Minorca, lies in a sheltered natural harbour. The rocky shoreline is dotted with elegant Georgian-style architecture, a throwback to its period of 18th-century British occupation. The museum in Fort
Marlborough offers a look back at this era. Other attractions close by include 19th-century Mola Fortress, built to prevent the return of the British, and Far de Favaritx lighthouse.

Alghero is an attractive medieval city, set on the island’s sandy Coral Riviera. Honey coloured walls encircle this fortress city, which brims with nostalgic charm and character. Alghero gets its Catalonian feel from several centuries of Spanish rule, and was once known as Barcelonetta. A walk through the narrow streets of the old town will uncover a selection of bars, restaurants and unique craft shops, while there are also several scenic beaches and coves nearby.

The rugged island of Elba, dotted with hilltop villages and castles, is set between Italy’s Tuscan coast and the island of Corsica. The principal town of Portoferraio sits at the tip of a deep bay on the northern coast. Yachts and pleasure craft fill the marina while boutiques and cafes line the narrow streets. A dominating fortress built by the powerful Medici family has guarded Portoferraio since the 16th century. The French emperor Napoleon spent a year in exile in Portoferraio and stayed at the Villa of the Mills, which enjoys a prime setting on a promontory overlooking the Ligurian Sea. In contrast, Napolean’s simple summer villa in San Marino features a museum displaying art and antiques from the era. Mount Capanne is the highest point on the island of Elba. The summit, 3,340 feet above sea level, can be scaled by cable car, where you can take in far-reaching island views on a clear day.

During the Renaissance, the powerful Medici family commissioned its old town which features a latticework of canals and fortifications, including Fortezza Nuova. Of note are the Baroque facades along Via della Madonna, the restored Duomo and the checkerboard promenade.

As the birthplace of the French Emperor, Napoleon’s memory has been preserved in a museum in his childhood home, the grand cathedral where he was christened and in the square named after him. Explore the atmospheric squares and lanes of the old town, enjoy the relaxed air of the harbourside cafes or visit one of the fine museums, such as the Fesch which has paintings by Botticelli, Raphael and Titian.
