Cruise along the Tagus River to reach the sprawling city of Lisbon, which is spread across seven hills. It boasts two UNESCO-listed sites: Jeronimos Monastery, where Vasco da Gama is entombed and Bélem Tower, built in his honour.

Explore the sights and experience the atmosphere of Lisbon by vintage tram or travel by Tuk Tuk into the heart of Lisbon’s old quarter of narrow cobbled streets.

The elegant capital of the Balearics is characterised by attractive, palm-fringed squares lined with stylish shops and cafes, while the maze of streets in the old town reveal a distinctly Moorish heritage.

Set on the west coast of Tuscany, Livorno was founded in the 11th century to protect Pisa. During the Renaissance, the powerful Medici family commissioned its old town which features a latticework of canals and fortifications, including Fortezza Nuova.
It became a free city during the 17th century, attracting traders which has contributed to its multicultural nature. Of note are the Baroque facades along Via della Madonna, the restored Duomo and the checkerboard promenade.
An included panoramic excursion will reveal this working port’s mix of old and new. Pisa and the Renaissance city of Florence can be visited on optional excursions.

Civitavecchia, Italy
Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
Civitavecchia was founded in the second century AD and has a tumultuous history that has seen it attacked by the Vandals and sacked by the Saracens.
Enjoy the bustling seaside ambience and seek out such historic sights as the 16th-century Michelangelo Fort and Roman thermal baths at Terme Taurine.

Visit the ‘Eternal City’ of Rome on an optional excursion and experience the atmosphere of this lively metropolis. There are numerous attractions to explore, from the 18th-century Trevi Fountain to the Roman Colosseum.
Sorrento ⚓, Italy
Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
Located on the scenic Sorrentine Peninsula facing the Bay of Naples, Sorrento has a clifftop setting overlooking its lively marinas and the turquoise sea. The town’s historic centre is a warren of cobblestone streets lined with artisan workshops, boutiques and monasteries.
It is also home to the town’s main square, the Piazza Tasso, with its honey-coloured buildings, decorative archways and lively street cafes selling the local speciality, Limoncello, a citrus liqueur produced from the lemons that thrive around Sorrento and Amalfi.
Sorrento is a new port of call for Spirit of Adventure.

Olbia, Sardinia
Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
A gateway to Sardinia’s Emerald Coast, a haunt of the rich and famous, Olbia is a bustling trade hub thanks to its strategic setting on the island’s west coast facing Italy. Upmarket shops, jewellers and pavement cafes edge piazzas.
From the ancient Phoenicians and Carthaginians to Romans, Olbia has passed hands many times. The Romanesque Basilica of San Simplicio is a fine example of an early Pisan church, while some of the region’s ancient relics are showcased at the Archaeological Museum. Nearby archaeological sites worth visiting include the Roman aqueduct and baths. The nearby Neolithic Rui Mulino O Cabu Abbas and sacred well of ‘Sa Testa’ ruins, left behind by the ancient Nurgahic culture, on the outskirts of town.

Visit nearby Calangianus, famous for the production and export of cork. Alternatively, enjoy a scenic drive along the Emerald Coast.

Cartagena, Spain
Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
Cartagena is a historically significant city, a fact illustrated by its Roman theatre that was only unearthed in 1988. The surrounding hills are crowned by castles while the harbour is protected by an 18th-century sea wall. Set on the coast of Murcia, Cartagena has been a prized port since the Carthaginians wrapped it in ramparts and there are still portions of these Punic fortifications standing.
Other attractions include the 13th-century cathedral in the old town as well as an array of modernist gems, such as the town hall.

Optional excursion
Journey through the foothills of the Sierra Carrascoy to the city of Murcia, capital of the province of the same name. Settled by the Moors in the 9th century and conquered by the Christians in the 13th, this bustling city features an array of architectural styles, from Gothic to Baroque.
Gibraltar
Arrive 1000. Depart 1700.
Watching over the entrance to the Mediterranean, stands the unmistakable limestone Rock of Gibraltar. At its base lies Gibraltar which is connected to the end of the Iberian Peninsula by a sandy isthmus and offers an intriguing blend of British and Spanish culture.
Discover Gibraltar’s Palladian architecture and typically British sights, such as red pillar boxes and familiar high street chains. Alternatively, visit the military museum or ascend the limestone monolith by cable car for panoramic views and to meet the mischievous Barbary macaques.
From the top of the Rock you can look out over two continents: Africa lies just 13 miles to the south, whilst Europe stretches to the north.
