Uncover the cultural treasures and ancient sights of Greece and its idyllic islands during this 22-night, all-inclusive cruise to the Eastern Mediterranean in 2026. Explore Gibraltar’s quirky British charm and the UNESCO-listed streets of Valletta, where highlights include 16th-century St John’s Co-Cathedral.
Cruise across the Ionian Sea to the Mani Peninsula of Greece, where the traditional town of Gythio was once a gateway to the ancient city of Sparta. Enjoy the island charms of Syros, where the capital Ermoupouli has elegant neoclassical architecture, and Mykonos with its whitewashed villages and iconic windmills. While Volos, at the foot of Mount Pelion, is steeped in Greek mythology and was the starting point of the ancient expedition of Jason and the Argonauts, and Piraeus offers a gateway to ancient Athens and its famous Acropolis.
In Sicily, the ancient port city of Catania sits at the foot of Mount Etna and is a new port of call for Saga Cruises. Its UNESCO-listed central square, Piazza del Duomo, features an elaborate cathedral and 18th-century Elephant Fountain.
Finally, call at Spain’s Costa Tropical and the charming town of Motril, gateway to Granada, whose crowning glory is the Moorish Generalife gardens and Alhambra palace.

Watching over the entrance to the Mediterranean, stands the unmistakable limestone Rock of Gibraltar. At its base lies Gibraltar which is connected to the end of the Iberian Peninsula by a sandy isthmus and offers an intriguing blend of British and Spanish culture. Discover Gibraltar’s Palladian architecture and typically British sights, such as red pillar boxes and familiar highstreet chains. Alternatively, visit the military museum or ascend the limestone monolith by cable car for panoramic views and to meet the mischievous Barbary macaques. From the top of the Rock you can look out over two continents: Africa lies just 13 miles to the south, whilst Europe stretches to the north.

Cruise into the Grand Harbour of Valletta, overlooked by honey hued forts built by the Knights of St John in the 16th century. The UNESCO-listed streets exude old-world charm at every turn. Highlights include St John’s Co-Cathedral, which houses the Caravaggio masterpiece, ‘The Beheading of Saint John’, and the Upper Barakka Gardens, located on the upper level of 16th-century St Peter and St Paul’s Bastion.

Set on the eastern shore of the Mani Peninsula, the traditional Greek town of Gythio was once the main gateway to the ancient city of Sparta. Today, it has an extensive waterfront with views over the Laconian Gulf, a warren of quaint streets, sandy beaches and several Roman ruins, including a theatre. On the Kranae islet, near the port of Gythio, the Tzanetakis Tower houses the Historical and Ethnological Museum of Mani.

The little island of Syros is part of the Cyclades archipelago in the South Aegean. Its charming capital Ermoupouli features pastel-coloured buildings and pedestrianised lanes shaded by canopies of pink bougainvillea. The central market is a hub of activity where local produce such as cheese, olive oil and souvlaki are sold. There are numerous churches in the area, including the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin which houses a 16th-century painting of the Assumption by El Greco.

Cruise into the Pagasetic Gulf to visit the city of Volos, located at the foot of Mount Pelion. Volos was the starting point of the ancient expedition of Jason and the Argonauts, one of the best-known chapters of Greek Mythology. Today, the city has grand architecture, historic churches and over ten museums, including The Archaeological Museum, which has exhibits dating back to the Neolithic Period.

Mykonos is framed by sandy beaches and dotted with whitewashed villages and windmills that have attracted sightseers and celebrities alike for decades. The cosmopolitan main town bustles with life and is a warren of flagstone lanes fringed with chic boutiques, pavement cafes and galleries. The district of Little Venice features waterfront houses with balconies that overhang the sea below.

‘The Cradle of Western Civilisation’, ancient Athens was the birthplace of democracy as well as a crucible of creativity, leading to great advances in philosophy, art, literature and architecture. This is represented by Athen’s crowning achievement, the UNESCO-listed Acropolis. The exceptional well-preserved 5th-century BC complex watches over the city from a rocky outcrop and encompasses the monumental Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaia and the temple of Athena Nike. In its lee sprawls the old Plaka neighbourhood packed with tavernas, cafes and small shops.

This ancient port city sits on the east coast of Sicily at the foot of Mount Etna and is a new port of call for Saga Cruises. The grand, UNESCO-listed central square, Piazza del Duomo, is overlooked by the elaborate cathedral dedicated to St Agata, the patron saint of Catania. At the centre of the square is the 18th-century Elephant Fountain, designed by architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini. Much of the surrounding architecture is built from volcanic basalt, which has earned Catania the title, ‘the city in black and white’.
