You will pass the Castle of San Anton, built on an island and today housing the local archaeological museum.

Next, you will arrive at the Tower of Hercules for a photo stop. This beacon was built by the Romans and is the only lighthouse in the world still working as originally intended. It is arguably the city’s most important monument and features on La Coruña’s coat of arms. Legend has it, the bones of Gerion – a giant killed by Hercules – are buried under the lighthouse, hence its name.

Finally, pause for photos at the base of Mount San Pedro, where you can see the Tower of Hercules across the bay. Afterwards, it is time to return to your ship.

Leaving the port, drive past the Jerónimos Monastery, built using limestone over a period of 100 years starting in 1501; UNESCO-listed Belém Tower, constructed with the primary objective of protecting the bay; the Monument to the Discoveries; the pink façade of Belém Palace, the official residence of the Portuguese president; the new Coach Museum; Avenida da Liberdade, the most central avenue in Lisbon and a popular shopping district for both tourists and locals; and Edward VII park.

You will also cross the 25th April suspension bridge over the Tagus River to see the imposing statue of Christ the Redeemer. Stretching across the estuary to the Tagus River in Lisbon the suspension bridge is considered as a twin sister of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco because of its similar design. The bridge is an impressive sight, and it also offers a breathtaking view when crossing it.

Visible from most parts of Lisbon and beyond, the statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Rei) stands a striking 270 feet high on its angular pedestal, overlooking the south bank of the Tagus River. One of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks standing tall with its robed arms outstretched, it was erected in 1959 and modelled on the famous Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro.

Then, enjoy your scenic drive back to the port.

This is primarily a coach-based excursion, with most of the sightseeing taking place from your vehicle. You will spend approximately 45 minutes at Magdalena Peninsula. Expect to walk approximately 300 yards here over flat and uneven ground.

This relaxing panoramic tour introduces you to some of the sights of the UNESCO-listed city of Bordeaux. Among the highlights will be the Chartrons river front, where the city’s famous wine trade begun, and L’Esplanade des Quinconces – one of Europe’s largest squares, with a column commemorating the French Revolution.

Santiago’s cathedral has become the most popular site of Christian pilgrimage after Jerusalem and Rome, and you will see both the beautiful Jubilee Door and the traditional tomb of St James on this excursion. Leaving the port of La Coruña, travel one-hour by coach to Santiago. 

On arrival, walk to Obradoiro Square, where your guide will point out the cathedral, the city hall and the college of San Jerónimo. Experience the scenic surroundings of Galicia on this tour, which begins with a panoramic sightseeing tour of La Coruña from the comfort of your coach. Drive along the famous seafront promenade lined with houses and their many windows, which have given the city its informal title of the ‘Crystal City’. You'll reach Maria Pita Square, where the town hall stands, and one of the most important names in the city. The walk continues to one of the most iconic churrerias, Bonilla, where you will taste the local churros before returning to the ship with the guide.

There will be up to two miles of essential walking, over flat and cobbled ground. You must also be prepared to spend considerable periods of time standing. Flat and comfortable shoes are recommended. At the end of the tour, you can choose to remain in town and continue to explore independently, returning to ship at your own leisure.

Leave La Coruña and head to Pazo de Oca, often known as the “Galician Versailles.” This 17th to 18th-century manor house features Baroque gardens, a watermill, and laundry, along with swans, ducks, and geese gliding in the water. The French-style landscaped gardens showcase camellias and magnolias, and a special feature is a 350-yard avenue of linden trees.

Next, visit the nearby Pazo de Ribadulla gardens, an English-style landscape with a small pond, Virginia tulip tree and an abundance of camellias. After exploring both manor house gardens, return to your ship in La Coruña.

Expect to walk approximately three quarters of a mile, the terrain in the gardens will be uneven and may be slippery. It may also be muddy. On this half-day tour, explore the city of Aveiro, nestled along the Ria de Aveiro. The city is distinguished by its canals, often filled with vibrant boats and lined with Art Nouveau style buildings. Drive to the charming town of Sintra, where you can admire many stunning buildings and works of art. The whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its 19th-century romantic architecture.

On arrival you will visit Sintra National Palace, also known as Palácio da Vila, famous for its magnificent painted ceilings. The palace is the only survivor of the country's Royal Halls, dating from the Middle Ages. One of the highlights is its kitchen, complete with huge 110-feet high conical chimneys.

After your visit to the palace, stop for refreshments, and then enjoy free time to explore on your own. The town has retained much of its medieval layout, with labyrinthine streets, flights of steps and arcaded buildings.

On your return journey to the ship you will follow a section of the scenic ocean road, and pass the Belém district with its famous tower.

During the visit to Sintra Palace there will be one hour of standing and essential walking covering approximately 500 metres. There are approximately 120 steps and a winding staircase inside the palace. Walking during time at leisure is at your discretion, but please note Sintra Town has cobbled streets, steps and inclines. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. Guests must be physically fit to participate on this tour. The drive to Sintra will take approximately one hour, the return drive to the ship will take 90 minutes. You will have approximately one hour at the Sintra National Palace, followed by 90 minutes of free time.

Uncover the history of Lisbon as you explore the city with a local guide on foot.

Starting from the port your guide will take you into the city to see some of Lisbon’s significant examples of historical architecture and tell you the city’s stories and traditions. The Chiado district is one of the highlights of your walking tour. The several bookstores, cafes and other shops here have barely changed since they were founded more than half a century ago.

As you walk through the city, you'll see the Praça do Comércio, also known as Black Horse Square, and Largo do Carmo, where Quartel do Carmo can be found, before heading down to Rossio, once the liveliest square in the city. Here you can admire the Dona Maria National Theatre, originally built around 1450.

Just off the northeast corner of Rossio sits a small but lively square brimming with history: São Domingos, home to the São Domingos church which is now a National Monument. Enjoy a short stop for a coffee and cake before continuing your walk through Rua da Prata passing by Sé de Lisboa, the 12th-century cathedral of Lisbon.

You will then begin the walk back to the ship via part of the Alfama district, a labyrinth of narrow cobbled alleyways and colourful houses.

This tour is all on foot and you will be required to walk up to three miles, sometimes over uneven ground, and there may be more than 15 steps to negotiate. Guests should be physically fit to participate and be able to keep up with the group. Toilet facilities will be available in the local cafes and a small purchase may be required. Join us to discover the lesser explored area of Lisbon, Arrábida.

Leaving the port, your journey by coach takes you over the 25th April bridge and on a scenic drive to Sesimbra, an old fishing village which lies at the foothills of the Serra da Arrábida mountain range. The village is lined with traditional whitewashed houses, overlooked by Sesimbra’s Moorish Castle. Enjoy an exterior visit of the castle for approximately 30 minutes before the tour continues by coach to Azeitão.

Azeitão is located in the nature reserve of the Serra da Arrábida and is known for its tasty regional products. During your time in the area, you will visit one of the local wine cellars and have the opportunity to taste the Moscatel wines.

The tour concludes with a scenic drive through Arrábida Natural park before returning to the ship.

This tour includes two visits: one to the exterior of Sesimbra Castle, where walking is over uneven ground, but is at your discretion, and the second is to a winery, where 350 yards of essential walking is required over uneven ground with up to 40 steps. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. The order of sights may vary. The drive to Sesimbra Castle will take approximately one hour. The return drive to the ship will take approximately two hours.

Travel inland by coach from Gijón to Oviedo, the regional capital of Asturias and the most culturally and historically interesting city in the province. Founded in the eighth century but later destroyed by the Moors, Oviedo was rebuilt a century later as a royal stronghold by the Spanish kings Alfonso II and Ramiro I.

On arrival, you will start a walking tour with your guide, visiting the historic city centre where numerous medieval buildings still stand. You will visit Oviedo Cathedral, dating from the 14th century and a fine example of the Flamboyant Gothic style: it is noted for its delicate openwork spire and the three Gothic portals on the west front.

You have free time to explore further on your own before heading back to Gijón.

This tour involves walking a total distance of approximately one mile over largely flat terrain, with some cobbled streets in the city centre. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Enjoy a scenic drive along the coast of Asturias to the seafaring town of Avilés, now a modern city and a major centre for the production and export of iron and steel. The town has preserved its old quarter, which is now considered an area of artistic and historic interest.

A walking tour will show you the pedestrian streets of Galiana and Rivero, the Plaza de España with the City Hall, and the Church of Sabugo. You will also view the modern Óscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre, named after this great Brazilian architect.

Returning to Gijón, your coach will take you to the Labour University, which was built between 1948 and 1957 by architect Luis Moya Blanco. The bell-tower, the tallest stone structure in Spain, is based on the Giralda in Seville, and is 426 feet high. The university was originally founded to provide education for the children of local miners and factory workers who had been killed or injured in industrial accidents.

Leaving the University after a photo stop, the drive continues to Gijon, alight the coach at the drop-off point and head on foot to the old town. You will have some free time to explore on your own before the return walk to your coach for the short drive to the pier.

This excursion involves walking about three miles, much of which will be over cobbled streets with occasional steps and kerbs to negotiate. Flat walking shoes are recommended. Due to coach parking restrictions in Gijon, the coach will drop you off outside the Train Museum, you will continue on foot to the city centre to visit Gijon's old quarter. The distance will be approximately half a mile each way.

Gijon is the oldest and most populated city in Asturias.

After a short drive you will arrive at the Labour University of Gijon. Built between 1946 and 1955 by the Ministry of Labour, it is considered the most important architectural building from the 20th century in the Asturias region. Covering 322,917 square yards this is the largest building in Spain, even larger than the Monastery of El Escorial.

On arrival, your guide will provide a short explanation about the building before you head to the Labour Café for a coffee or tea and a bun. Afterwards, the drive continues to the old quarter of Gijon before returning to your ship having gained an overview of this dynamic, lesser-travelled city.

Most of the sightseeing will take place from your vehicle. At the Labour university you will be required to walk approximately 350 yards.

Enjoy a drive through Gijón, the oldest and most populated city in Asturias, and a visit to a local cider factory. During your city drive, your first stop is at the Labour University of Gijon, considered to be the largest building in Spain.

Next, head to a traditional Llagar – a cider brewery, where you will discover how cider is traditionally made in Asturias. There will also be the opportunity to taste Asturias cider alongside some local cheeses. Following your visit, re-board your coach for a drive through Gijón’s old quarter before heading back to the ship.

There is approximately 600 yards of walking involved during this tour. The visit to the cider factory is entirely on foot, you will need to remain standing for one hour while here.

Begin this excursion with a drive to Santillana del Mar, located approximately 22 miles from Santander.
