Casablanca and the Canaries

Since the end of the 15th century, the city of Cádiz has provided a gateway to the New World. Throughout this panoramic tour, you will be met by several sights including the cathedral, city walls, Genovese Park and Alameda de Apodaca. You will also see some of the settlements surrounding Cadiz such as La Cortadura, San Fernando and Puerto Real before returning to the port.

Depart the pier for a snapshot tour of Lanzarote, see the Island’s capital Teguise, Caleta Famara Beach and Monumento al Campesino.

First, travel inland to Teguise, which was founded in the 15th century by the Conquistadors. You will spend approximately 20 minutes here, where walking is at your discretion during time at leisure. On days when there is no market, you will be able to admire the beautifully-restored houses and picturesque square.

Next, continue to Caleta Famara Beach, which Lanzarote artist César Manrique frequented as a child. A short photo stop will be made at Caleta Famara Beach for approximately 20 minutes.

The drive continues, passing through the typical Canarian villages of Soo, La Santa, Tinajo, Tiagua and Mozaga. Stop at the Peasants' Monument (Monumento al Campesino), which is 50-feet high and was created by Manrique in 1968 as a tribute to the work of the island’s peasant farmers. A short comfort stop will be made here, before returning to the ship.

Take in the highlights of La Palma on a scenic drive around the island, beginning in the capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma. From here, continue to the Mirador de la Concepcion, stopping for photos at this viewpoint before continuing to the Caldera de Taburiente, one of the largest extinct volcanic craters in the world. It is more than five miles in diameter and, in places, over 5,000 feet deep.

After pausing for photographs, your coach takes you through the western part of La Palma to Los Llanos de Aridane, the largest town on the island which has a population of over 20,000. Enjoy vistas of Los Llanos, surrounded by cacti and banana plantations, before returning to your ship via the town of El Paso.

This included excursion takes you on a drive to two viewpoints, where photo stops will be made. You will also have the opportunity to try the traditional Madeiran drink Poncha.

The excursion begins as you leave the port, passing Santa Catarina Park, and travels west towards the Santa Rita area, before arriving at your first viewpoint overlooking Funchal.

Then continue southwest, passing Câmara de Lobos, a picturesque fishing village once painted by Sir Winston Churchill. Enjoy a short stop at Pico da Torre viewpoint where you can see the village and its bay from above.

Reboard your coach and head to a local establishment, close to the port, where you can try the traditional Poncha made with sugarcane Rum. After your taste of Poncha, return to the ship by coach or make your own way back independently.

This tour starts with a panoramic drive around Cádiz, the oldest continuously inhabited city in Spain. The historic town centre is still surrounded by fortifications, dating mainly from the 18th century, and inside the walls it has changed little over the past 300 years: few buildings are more than three or four stories high, and the cathedral dome still dominates the city. Following your tour, proceed to a local ‘tablao’ – an Andalusian tavern – for an authentic flamenco performance.

Flamenco originated as the music of Spanish gypsies, incorporating both Western European and North African influences. Sit back and enjoy a traditional performance of its staccato, balletic dances, haunting ballads and fiery guitar music. While enjoying the music and dancing, you will be served wine and local ‘tapas’ – small plates of Serrano ham, cheese and Spanish omelettes. You can even try some flamenco dancing for yourself!

Following this cultural and gastronomic experience, your coach will take you back to the port.

You will need to walk at least 200 yards from the coach stop to the flamenco venue, and the same distance back again. This is partly over cobbled streets, so flat walking shoes are recommended. All other sights in the city are viewed from the coach.

The ‘classic white’ village of Vejer de la Frontera sits between the sierras and the sea, perched high above the steep gorge of the River Barbate. It attracts visitors with a passion for history, as they wander its labyrinthian cobbled streets and gaze up at the ruined castle.

Leaving the port by coach, travel through Cádiz and then along the winding roads, climbing the tree-flanked hillside. Arriving at the Spanish hillside town, see the whitewashed houses, declared a national monument in 1978. Enjoy a walking tour along the cobbled streets, lined with traditional architecture, with a local guide.

Afterwards, return to Cádiz and your awaiting ship.

The city of Cádiz has – since the Discovery of America – provided Europe with a gateway to the New World. The city, popularly known as the Tacita de Plata (Silver Cup), boasts monuments of great interest. Following your panoramic drive, you will begin your walking tour through the city’s narrow lanes. Starting at the Town Hall, in the Plaza de San Juan de Dios, continue towards the golden cupola of the cathedral, which looms high above.

Afterwards, stop for a refreshment and enjoy a sherry, beer or soft drink at a local cafe before returning to the ship.

Seville’s history is punctuated by peaks and troughs: golden ages and a great plague which wiped out half of the city’s population. Standing testament to both its past and present is the architecture awaiting your exploration on this tour, including the largest cathedral in the world and a palace fit for a ruler – several, in fact.

Upon arrival in Seville, start your excursion with a visit to Plaza de España – a semi-circular brick building overlooking a small canal, then continue with a drive Paseo de Colon where you will start your walking tour through the Santa Cruz Quarter. This enchanting neighbourhood, formerly the Jewish Quarter, is renowned for its charming squares.

Your walk continues towards Seville’s cathedral, a symbol of Christianity’s triumph over Islamic rule: after all, the Christian holy place was built on top of the Islamic one. Gaze up at the tall minaret which has been transformed into the cathedral’s belltower and, stepping inside the cathedral itself, you will find extraordinarily high vaulted ceilings, 80 chapels and Christopher Columbus’s tomb. Here, you will gaze at the golden altar piece, which was the lifework of Flemish craftsman Pierre Dancart, taking over 60 years to perfect!

You will then have the opportunity for some time at leisure, to explore or enjoy lunch locally before returning to the ship by coach.

On this excursion, visit the Fundador winery to discover the simple secret that brandy goes exceptionally well with chocolate. The winery was founded in 1730 and consists of several vineyards, a winemaking plant, ageing cellars and a bottling centre. During your exclusive time at the winery, you are invited to tour the museum to learn about Fundador, credited as being Spain’s first brandy, before a tasting of three brandies paired with three different chocolates.

On your return journey back to the port, you will enjoy a panoramic tour of Jerez and Cadiz.

Leaving the pier, you travel south past the town of Chiclana, now a popular golf centre and beach resort, and then head inland to Medina Sidonia, a very ancient hill town. Your journey takes you along part of the Ruta del Toro (Route of the Bull), and as you go deeper into the countryside, passing olive groves and villages of whitewashed houses, your guide will tell you about local agriculture and the history of bullfighting.

Arriving at Jerez de la Frontera, famous as the home of sherry, flamenco dancing and purebred Andalusian horses, enjoy a short walk in the town centre. After your guided walk, reboard your coach before your return journey to Cádiz. Here, your coach will take you on a short panoramic drive around the city centre.

Depart the pier and head towards the Hassan II Mosque. Considered a masterpiece of contemporary Arab-Muslim architecture, the construction of the Mosque was a project initiated by the Moroccan ruler King Hassan II. A photo stop will be made here to marvel at the exterior of the Mosque, built at the sea's edge.

Afterwards, continue your panoramic drive around the city passing by the Notre Dame de Lourdes, a modernist Roman Catholic church built in the 1950’s by architect Achille D'angleterre. The drive continues to the resort area of Ain Diab, a stretch of coastline known as La Corniche. Here, you will make a short refreshment stop to sample some Moroccan mint tea.

Your tour concludes with a photo stop at Mohammad V Square before returning to the ship.

Learn the secrets to preparing a variety of Moroccan specialties during this cooking demonstration, followed by lunch at the popular Umayya Restaurant. Departing the pier, you first drive to the Hassan II Mosque for a photo stop of the exterior before continuing to the Central Market.

A stroll through this hub of colour and local activity will reveal a variety of fish, spices and unique African products – the market certainly provides an authentic local experience. Head next to Umayya, a renowned restaurant where you will be greeted with Moroccan tea, followed by an informative cooking demonstration, during which your instructor will showcase a selection of spices and prepare a variety of dishes.

Afterwards, a traditional Moroccan lunch will be served before returning to the pier and your awaiting ship.

Leaving the port, travel to Abderrahman Slaoui Museum, a tribute to the arts established by Abderrahman Slaoui – a traveller and treasure hunter for over fifty years. This museum is set up in an art deco building dating from the 1940’s and is dedicated to Moroccan jewellery and décor.

During your visit, admire the collection of antique jewellery, vintage posters by renowned artists like Dinet and Majorelle, as well as miniatures by De La Neziere. You will also encounter 19th-century Bohemian crystal boxes, illuminations and other artefacts collected from around the world. Following your visit, participate in a short Arabic Calligraphy workshop, learning the movements and techniques to create this artistic form of handwriting.

As you make your way back to the harbour, you will pass the Sacre Couer Cathedral, which you can admire before returning to your ship.

The information in the museum is displayed in Arabic and French. The order of sites may vary. It is advised that you do not take photos of any military personnel without their consent. Sitting on the Atlantic coastal plain, Rabat is the capital of Morocco. Here you will find a modern city with wide boulevards, gardens and white façades: a far cry from the hectic imperial cities of Marrakech and Fes, but no less steeped in history.

Your first stop is outside the Royal Palace, official residence of King Mohammed VI of Morocco, erected in 1864. Capture its grand exterior before driving to the Mausoleum Mohammed V, overlooked by Hassan Tower, a grand 12th-century project to create the tallest minaret in the world, abandoned after the ruler Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur’s death in 1199. The mausoleum was built to honour Mohammed V, the ruler who led Morocco to independence. Step inside the white marble pavilion, surmounted by a roof of green tiles, and gaze in wonder at the white onyx tomb, flanked by gold decorative flourishes.

A light Moroccan lunch is then served at a local restaurant, followed by a drive to Oudayas Kasbah. It is here where Rabat’s early history is echoed in the winding blue streets. If time allows, wander down to the Andalusian gardens, laid out by the French during the colonial period and boasting views across the Bou Regreg River, before the return drive to the ship.

There are steps throughout, with approximately 12 steps at Mausoleum Mohammed, 10 steps at the restaurant and 15 steps to reach the garden at Kasbah des Oudayas. With its French and Hollywood connections, Casablanca is more than just the largest port in North West Africa. By 1907, the city was occupied by the French who went on to establish a Protectorate in 1912. Their legacy can be seen in the buildings and design of the city which you will see as you visit some of its highlights.

Your first destination will be a photo stop at the Mohammed V Square in the heart of city. Built in the 1920s, admire this elegant space and its civic buildings, before continuing, passing the 20th-century church of Notre Dame de Lourdes.

Next, stroll through the New Medina, Habbous Quarter, with its intriguing alleyways and shops, visit the esplanade of the Royal Palace, and spot the parliamentary building of the Mahkama of the Pacha. No tour is complete without viewing the exterior of the Hassan II Mosque, completed in 1993 and one of the largest in the world.

Your tour concludes with a visit to ‘Rick’s Cafe’ – a recreation of the bar that featured in the 1942 Hollywood film ‘Casablanca’ starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Much of the action reflected the time, with some of the main scenes taking place in the bar. Step back to 1942 as you sip a complimentary drink and imagine Bogart uttering the now legendary words as he sees Ingrid Bergman... “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine”.

Travel to the historic town of Arucas, which features the impressive parish church of San Juan and the Plaza de la Constitution.

Then, continue to the picturesque town of Firgas, which has a long history connected to water. Today, an artificial waterfall flows down the steps in the centre of the old town, Paseo de Gran Canaria, providing a lovely place to walk.

From Firgas, you will head towards The Finca La Laja and Bodega Los Berrazales, a more than 200-year old farm known for its wine, coffee and oranges. You can learn about their coffee-making and wine-making process, and enjoy a tasting of both products.

Join us on this tour to visit a number of key sites in northern Gran Canaria. The tour starts with a 30-minute journey to discover the volcanic origins of Gran Canaria's Bandama Crater, an extinct volcano which rises nearly 1,900 feet above sea level. Take in the island views here, before travelling to Teror, a local town with whitewashed houses, red-tiled roofs and ornate carved balconies.

Stroll through the cobblestone streets and enter the Church of Our Lady of the Pine, dedicated to the patron saint of Gran Canaria. Continue on to Arucas and make a stop at Los Jardines de la Marquesa (The Duchess Gardens), where there are numerous tropical and sub-tropical flowers, plants and trees from around the world.

Enjoy tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes here, before heading back to the port, making a photo stop at the city of Altavista along the way.

There is just over half-a-mile of walking on this excursion, some of which is over cobblestones, with a few steps at the church and in the gardens. You will be driven along numerous winding roads with occasional steep drops - vertigo sufferers should take this into consideration. The duration of this tour may be affected by local traffic.

The Bandama Caldera is one of the youngest volcanoes on the Canarian archipelago. Its crater is over 650 feet deep, has a diameter of almost three-quarters of a mile and was last active about 3,000 years ago, when a series of eruptions took place that gave the Santa Brígida district its distinctive topography.

Leaving the pier, your coach will take you up towards the volcano. Here, begin your trek along a green path that takes you right into the heart of the Bandama Crater. At the very centre of the crater, you will see an abandoned homestead; this was formerly the only inhabited volcanic crater in the world! From this point, enjoy interior views of the crater which will reveal the effects of the eruptions.

After resting for a while, continue walking up the side of the crater: depending on the weather, you should be rewarded at the end with a panoramic view of the northern part of Gran Canaria. It will then be time to re-join your coach and transfer back to the port.

Additional Information

This hike involves continuous walking for around three hours, covering approximately five miles, over rough and uneven terrain that includes steep gradients to enter and exit the crater. Good walking boots and layered waterproofs are recommended. There are no opportunities to use public conveniences during the hike. You must by physically fit to participate in this tour. This tour is for small groups and has limited capacity. You will be required to negotiate a walk up and down hill over rocks, which may be slippery.

Sit back and enjoy some of the sights of Gran Canaria at a leisurely pace, with time at leisure to explore the picturesque resort of Puerto de Mogan. Start by heading south towards Playa del Ingles - the island’s main resort. En route stop at Maspalomas sand dunes with their rippling sands and sinuous curves.

Next, you’ll pause at a viewpoint overlooking modern Puerto Rico apartments built into the side of the hills that rise from the shoreline. Your tour concludes with a visit to the resort of Puerto Mogan. This resort with its backdrop of hills, white houses festooned with Bougainvillea and beachside promenade, offers a haven to enjoy some free time.

During 90 minutes of free time, perhaps stroll along the harbour, browse the shops or just take it easy in one of the cafes before returning to Las Palmas.

This tour involves walking of up to approximately 600 yards, with further walking at Puerto de Mogan town at your own discretion during your free time. There may be an extended walk to the main town, depending on the drop-off point. This tour involves winding roads and is not suitable for those who suffer from vertigo. It can take up to one hour from Las Palmas to reach the south of the island. The duration of this tour may be affected by local traffic.

Join us and travel south of Las Palmas to the resort town of Puerto Mogan, a modern resort with a timeless Mediterranean atmosphere. During the excursion you will embark on a submarine adventure for a unique underwater experience. Seated in the submarine, travel 20-25 metres underwater and capture the underwater world of Puerto Mogan through a porthole.

Afterwards there will also be an opportunity to explore Puerto Mogan with time at leisure, perhaps take a stroll through its bustling marina or relax in one of the local cafes or restaurants. After your visit to Puerto Mogan, return to the port of Las Palmas by coach.

There is approximately 550 yards of essential walking over flat ground. Walking during time at leisure is at your discretion. Access to the submarine is by vertical stairs through a hatch, approximately nine steep steps (ladder). There are no toilet facilities on board the submarine. The submarine part of the tour will last approximately 35–45 minutes and will travel approximately 20-25 metres in depth. This tour may operate in a different order. The submarine has limited capacity. The drive to and from Puerto Mogan is approximately one hour each way.

Join us on this easy tour of Northern Gran Canaria visiting the village of Teror, with its whitewashed houses and ornate balconies, and the town of Arucas, home to the Duchess Gardens.

Leaving Las Palmas, drive to Teror where you will stay for approximately 30 minutes. On arrival, set off on a short walking tour with your guide. Enjoy an outside visit of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pine, considered one of the most important churches in the Canaries after shepherds saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary nearby.

Then, continue by coach to Arucas, which is home to the Parish Church of San Juan Bautista, created by local master stonemasons – resulting in the town being declared an area of historic-artistic interest. A visit to this town would not be complete without a stop at the Duchess Gardens. You will spend approximately 40 minutes at the Duchess Gardens where you can take a stroll through the gardens, filled with Canarian and tropical plants, before returning to the ship.

This excursion visits the great Mirador del Rio viewpoint and Jameos del Agua underground cavern – which both showcase César Manrique’s architectural talent.

The tour begins with a coach transfer to the north of Lanzarote, to visit the Jameos del Agua Cave. César Manrique turned what was once a water hole in the earth’s surface into an inspiring volcanic cavern and exotic subterranean water garden, Jameos del Agua.

On arrival, you'll descend into the cavern via a winding staircase leading down to the underground, natural lake. This underground lake is slightly illuminated by the sun and is home to the blind albino crab, which are unique to Lanzarote.

After your visit inside the cavern, you walk along the volcanic path to the surface where you can see the crystal blue waters of the swimming pool, a backdrop for many visitor's photos.

Reboard your coach and head to Mirador del Rio viewpoint, located 500 metres above a cliff. This is one of the most unique architectural creations by César Manrique where you can capture panoramic views of Lanzarote and the Chinijo Archipelago.

Before returning to Arrecife, enjoy a visit to an Aloe Vera Farm, tucked away in the village of Orzola.

Join us on this small group tour for a trek into the famous Cuervo Volcano, also known as The Ravens Boiler. Begin your tour by travelling through Puerto del Carmen to the outskirts of Timanfaya National Park, where your trek begins. A sweeping view of the crater that was once visited by Alexander Von Humboldt, the great Prussian naturalist and philosopher, awaits you.

Now an extinct wonder, follow the inside perimeter of this volcano and take in more lunar landscapes as you enter and leave, admiring rocky winding paths and surrounding volcanoes in the distance. After the trek, the tour continues to the village of Yaiza where you will enjoy a tea or coffee before returning to the ship.

This tour involves between three and four miles of walking, including some steep inclines and over uneven terrain. Once at the crater, the walking will be mainly on flat terrain. Lanzarote has a fascinating history, one of its most notable events being the eruptions of the 1730s, when the volcanoes in the Timanfaya area erupted for six years and covered nearly a third of the island with lava. This volcanic landscape is revealed in Timanfaya National Park, also known as ‘Fire Mountain’, which will be your first destination after driving through the whitewashed villages of Puerto del Carman, Macher and Yaiza. Once at the national park, begin a tour of the craters and lava beds in this lunar-like terrain. At Islote de Hilario, enjoy a demonstration of the latent power of the volcano, as wood is ignited and steam produced by using the heat just below the surface.

Afterwards travel through the Salt Planes to La Geria, where vineyards dot the landscape. Here, the wines are protected by semi-circular stonewalls, making them look more like art than argriculture. A stop here will be made to visit a bodega, where there will be the opportunity to purchase some Lanzarote wine before returning to the ship, with a short stop at the Aloe Vera Farm on the way.

There is half-a-mile of essential walking, most of which is at the visitor centre over flat surfaces. However, at other stops some surfaces are likely to be exceptionally uneven. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes.

Join us on a scenic drive into the mountains of Anaga and enjoy some time at leisure in the town of La Laguna.

Your tour starts with a drive into the mountains, passing the fishing village of San Andres. During your drive you may be able to spot one of Tenerife’s symbols, the ‘Dragon Tree’, and admire the terraces of cultivated land.

There will be a short stop at the panoramic viewpoint of Pico del Ingles, where you can capture the view of the north and south side of the island. There will also be a stop at either Jardina viewpoint or Cruz del Carmen viewpoint, from where you can see La Laguna.

The last stop on your tour will be in La Laguna, where you can spend time at leisure and see the Christ Church. You will have approximately 30 minutes here before your return drive to the ship.

The Christ Church in La Laguna is not always open due to festivities and services. Toilet facilities will be available in La Laguna. Located in Cañadas del Teide National Park is Mount Teide, the highest mountain in all of the Spanish territories. The soaring peak and surrounding arid landscape offers contrasting panoramic views, and this tour takes you on the cable car to the summit so you can see the national park from above.

Setting off from Santa Cruz your drive will take you through the Esperanza Forest and on to the National Park. On reaching the cable car station at approximately 7700 feet above sea level, a short stop will be made to admire the view before boarding the cable car.

Make sure you have your camera close to hand during this eight-minute ride to the mountain’s 12,198-foot summit. You have free time here to take in the vistas of sprawling mountains punctuated by rugged petrified rock. Then return to the lower station to rejoin your coach for a scenic drive that takes in more of this unique island’s countryside, before finally arriving back at the port.

There is approximately three-quarters-of-a-mile of walking during this excursion. Some over uneven surfaces and inclines. There are 25 steps to access the cable car. This excursion involves spending several hours at altitudes ranging from 7,500 to 12,000 feet above sea level. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes and layered clothing and bring a warm jacket as it can be cold and windy. Each cable-car takes a maximum of 44 passengers and travels to the top in under eight minutes; you may need to stand in a queue while waiting to board.

Set off for a scenic drive through north Tenerife as you head for the haven of the Orchid Gardens. En route, you’ll pass through Oratava Valley, pausing for photographs at the Humboldt Viewpoint. Have your camera ready to record the views here which stretch from Mount Tiede to the coast of Puerto de la Cruz. The viewpoint is named after the explorer and naturalist Alexander Humboldt, who visited the island in 1799. He also visited the garden that previously stood on the site of what is now the Orchid Gardens, established in 1774 and the oldest on the island.

Upon arrival at the gardens, you will be welcomed by one of the owners who will act as your guide. In their company, explore the garden with its water feature, Dragon Tree, believed to be over 400 years old, and of course the collection of orchids, housed and displayed in a curving walkway. As well as yourself, past visitors to the garden have included the author Agatha Christie and the prolific and celebrated Victorian botanical artist, Marianne North. Afterwards, take time out to relax in the Orchid Gardens’ cafe as you enjoy some refreshments before returning to your ship.

Discover Tenerife’s most striking natural feature, Mount Teide, without the exertion of a demanding hike. Rising to a height of 12,000 feet, it is the highest peak in Spanish territory and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Your excursion begins with a drive towards the old colonial capital of La Laguna, situated in the Aguere Valley.

After passing through the photographic surroundings, journey south along the base of the mountain range, through pine forests and foothills to Teide National Park. Declared a national park in 1954, the park includes an enormous volcanic crater measuring over 29 miles in circumference. The park is situated at an altitude of over one mile above sea level: in winter, snow and gale force winds often close roads through it; during the summer months, the arid landscape gives visitors the impression of having walked onto the set of a western movie and can reach temperatures of over 37°C. At the heart of the crater, you visit the National Parador Visitors’ Centre and stand in the shadows of the majestic Roques de García.

During the course of the tour, a stop will also be made for refreshments. On your return journey to Santa Cruz, there will be several photo stops where you can savour the sweeping scenery.

Walking during this excursion is at your discretion but you should expect to walk at least 500 yards over some uneven surfaces, and there may be a considerable amount of standing. We recommend that you take an extra layer of clothing as temperatures towards the top of the mountain may be considerably colder than at sea level.

Seek out whales and dolphins in their natural habitat in the waters of southern Tenerife. Leaving the pier to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, travel one-hour by coach to the harbour of Puerto Colon in Playa des Las Americas.

Upon arrival, board one of the catamarans (not exclusive to Saga guests) in search of whales and dolphins. Pilot and sperm whales lurk in the waters around the island of Tenerife all year round and you may also see dolphins or other species of whales if you are lucky.

During the boat trip, drinks will be served and you will have some free time to swim if you wish. After this marine watching experience, return to Playa de Las Americas and travel back by road to the pier.

The boat used during this excursion is not exclusive to Saga guests. This excursion involves minimal walking but there are about eight steps to negotiate when getting on and off the catamaran and you should be a confident swimmer if you wish to go in the water. There are toilet facilities on board the boat and steps are required to access them. Comfortable clothing and sunscreen is recommended: please wear a swimsuit under your clothes and bring a towel if you wish to go swimming. Guests are required to remove their shoes before boarding the boat. All activities in the water are undertaken at your own risk. Participants may order a packed lunch from the ship. After leaving the busy harbour of Santa Cruz, enjoy a drive along Maritime Avenue to the village of San Andrés, one of the island’s oldest settlements dating back to 1497. The village is renowned for its golden beach, Las Teresitas, which was made partly from 238,000 tons of sand imported from the former Spanish Sahara. Pause for photographs here before driving on to El Bailadero, the highest point in this area, offering panoramic views of a wild landscape.

Through a tunnel, you then reach the other side of the Anaga Mountains and the hidden village of Taganana, where you stop to sample some local wine and cheese. Once refreshed, continue through the living museum of Mercedes Forest to Pico del Ingles, the Mirador del Carmen and Cantera: all offering more views of the wild countryside and northern coast. You return to Santa Cruz via La Laguna, pausing to visit the 18th-century ‘Iglesia del Cristo’ (Christ Church) if a service is not taking place.

The abundant colour and sheer variety of plants, flowers and vegetation that thrive in the Canary Islands is the focus on this excursion. First, take a drive along the island’s main highway to Puerto de la Cruz, an old colonial town on the north coast. Enjoy some free time to explore the town at your leisure.

After, the first garden you visit is the Jardin Botanico, founded by a royal decree of King Charles III of Spain in 1788. He wanted to create a nursery where plants, shrubs and flowers, brought by the Conquistadors from the New World, could acclimatise to Spanish soil. Many of the plants here are the original specimens, delivered shortly after the opening of the garden. The centrepiece is a huge South American fig tree whose enormous branches and roots have created an outlandish treehouse.

From the Jardin Botanico, embark on a drive to the Orchid Gardens of Sitio Litre, which have welcomed many distinguished visitors including the famous crime writer Agatha Christie. These tranquil gardens are bursting with colour and have the largest collection of orchids in the Canary Islands. Here, enjoy tea or coffee with pastries and perhaps browse the shop before the return drive to Santa Cruz.

Enjoy a visit to the unique El Paso Silk Museum and the restored 17th-century sugar estate, Hotel Hacienda de Abajo. Sit back and enjoy the lush scenery as you travel along mountain roads, passing vineyards and banana plantations en route to El Paso. Upon arrival, a short stroll takes you to the small silk museum where you can witness silk being weaved by a 500-year-old process - the only place in Europe where this method is still used.

Afterwards, it is time to visit a restored 17th-century sugar estate, now the small and luxurious Hotel Hacienda de Abajo. Surrounded by rich vegetation and botanical gardens, this historic manor house hosts a collection of art on display, including sculptures, paintings, furniture and porcelain, in addition to some tapestries. Fresh fruit punch will be served on arrival before your guide will take you on a tour of the main rooms.

Afterwards, a selection of teas and pastries will be served on a terrace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, weather permitting. On your return journey to Santa Cruz, a short photo-stop will be made at La Glorieta Square, allowing you to feast your eyes on the mosaics by local artist Luis Morera.

Over the past century, the volcanic origins of La Palma have shaped its landscapes. Join us and explore the volcanic vistas as you head off the beaten track in a 4x4 bus. Leave the pier and head towards the hills of Las Breñas, crossing thick vegetation and looking over Cumbre Nueva, the island’s main mountain range.

Continue into the mountains, across the National Park and on towards the Refugio del Pilar, until you reach the Mirador del Jable viewpoint. From this natural balcony enjoy a panoramic view of the Aridane Valley, the Caldera del Taburiente and the Cumbre Nueva hills.

Reboard your bus, to continue your adventure through volcanic scenery and along off-road tracks, pausing at the San Juan volcanic area, where you will be able to see a flowing lava river before crossing a large area of Canary Island pine. Make a short stop at a picnic area to tuck into some traditional Canarian snacks before driving to the town of Fuencaliente. You will stop here to see the San Antonio volcano and the Teneguia volcano. After admiring the view at approximately 633 metres above sea level, return to the ship by road.

Enjoy this small group tour as you embark on a scenic drive in an open top minibus to the Mirador de la Concepcion on the outskirts of Santa Cruz de la Palma. Marvel at the panoramas over the town and north coast of the island before heading onto the Santuario Virgen de Las Nieves, located in the highest part of the town and one of the most popular shrines in the capital.

Inside the small, whitewashed church, you will find the island’s most sacred icon, the Virgin Mary of the Snows - the patron saint of the island. Thanks to lookouts on land who will guide your boat towards the mammals, you will likely see Short-finned Pilot Whales, Bottlenose Dolphins, Atlantic Spotted Dolphins and Common Dolphins that will leap and jump from the water displaying their acrobatic moves as they swim alongside the boats. If you are lucky, you may also spot a Risso’s Dolphin, a Beaked Whale or an Orca, all of which are occasional visitors to Madeira.

This excursion explores different habitats and their unique biodiversity, from grassland, coastal, forest and freshwater species with a special focus on endemic birds. From around 1900 feet above sea level you have the opportunity to observe the endemic bird species and subspecies of Madeira and Macaronesia.

Visit the village of Monte, take a cable car ride over the valley of Joao Gomes and explore the botanical gardens. Leave the pier and drive towards Monte, known for its collection of fine properties and gardens, perched on a hill above Funchal.

Monte’s 18th-century, twin towered Church is one of the area’s most prominent landmarks. In the centre of the high altar of the church stands the statue of Our Lady of Monte, credited with being the source of many miracles. Make your way to the cable car station in Monte and take a ride to the botanical gardens.

Along the way, enjoy the views across the Valley of João Gomes River before reaching the gardens, located on the eastern edge of Funchal and known as one of the best examples of Madeiran landscaped gardens. Located in the grounds of a former private house, the gardens are host to a profusion of plants and flowers, from all parts of the world, which thrive in the island’s temperate climate.

This is a strenuous excursion where extensive walking is required over cobbled, uneven ground, many steps and steep inclines. Walking of up to one mile is essential and this may increase dependent on the garden visit. There are 40 steps in Monte Village (and an optional 75 steps to visit the church), 85 steps for the cable car and between 50-100 steps during the visit to the garden. Leave the pier and head to the belvedere of Pico dos Barcelos, which offers a sweeping panorama. Continue next to the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, which was once painted by Sir Winston Churchill. Known for its quaint, red-roofed houses and brightly painted fishing boats, its name translates to ‘The Sea Wolves’ Lair’.

To reach Cabo Girão, your coach takes you through pine woods and eucalyptus forests. Cabo Girão is said to be the second-highest sea cliff in Europe: it rises right out of the sea, and the viewpoint where you stop for photos offers coastal views along Funchal, and out to the distant horizon. Your journey then takes you up into the mountains, passing the vineyards of Estreito de Câmara Lobos, one of the most important winegrowing areas of the island. Many of the vines can be seen growing on terraces along the steep valleys that you pass on the way.

Arriving at the Adega da Quinta Restaurant, at Quinta d o Estreito, you can enjoy more panoramas over the coast. Nearby, you can spot the original wine cellar where barrels of Madeira wine, local brandy and ‘ginja’ - a sweet cherry liqueur - are stored. Sample some local wine and Portuguese cheese here before heading back to the ship.

Following a ‘Levada’ trail is one of the most enjoyable ways of seeing Madeira. These irrigation channels were created in the 19th century by the Portuguese settlers, who painstakingly carved them out of the rock by hand. Designed to carry fresh water from the north to the drier southern regions of the island, they helped to create many of the lush landscapes that can be seen today.

This guided walk will follow the course of The Levadas for over three miles, allowing you to admire the verdant plants, mountain views and green farmland that cover Madeira. You will first be driven to Vale Paraiso, where you set off for your two-hour walk. The first half will be a gentle stroll over fairly level ground, rising to the Camacha area for its surrounding views. The second stretch will take you all the way to Rochão, where you rejoin the coach for your return journey to the port.
