Day 8 Guayaquil to the Galapagos Islands
After breakfast transfer to the airport for your flight to the Galapagos Islands.
Here you’ll embark MV Galapagos Legend (4⚓) for a three-night cruise around the archipelago. The unique flora and fauna of these incredible islands inspired Charles Darwin to form his theory on evolution. Cruise to Bartolomé Island, a small, barren islet to the east of Santiago Islans, and the most photographed island in Galapagos. Climb the 600 metre trail through the incredible lunar-like landscape to reach the island’s summit, and marvel at the panoramic views of Pinnacle Rock, the immense black lava flows at Sullivan Bay, and the peaks of Santiago Island beyond. Descend to the beach below for a snorkelling session that could see you come face-to-face with Galapagos penguins, white-tipped reef sharks and playful Galapagos sea lions. B, L, D
Day 9 South Plaza Island and North Seymour Island
Arrive at South Plaza island this morning, off the coast of Santa Cruz.
Despite the island’s incredibly small size, it’s home to a wide variety of species and is especially noted for its extraordinary flora such as the endemic Opuntia cacti and the colourful Galapagos carpet weed. As you make your way ashore, look out for sea lions, swallow-tailed gulls and land iguanas, then take a walk up to the cliff edge. Here you’ll have the chance to see more of the island’s birdlife, including frigatebirds, Galapagos shearwaters and even displaying red-billed tropicbirds.
Continue to North Seymour island this afternoon where a walking trail reveals the largest colony of magnificent frigatebirds in Galapagos. You should also be able to see courting blue-footed boobies, as well as sea lions and marine iguanas along the coast. B, L, D
Day 10 San Cristobal Island
Sea lions will greet you as you arrive at the easternmost Galapagos island, San Cristobal.
The island is home to the oldest, permanent settlement of Galapagos and is where Charles Darwin first stepped ashore in 1835. This morning you’ll tour Punta Pitt, the only place in Galapagos where you can see all three of the native booby species nesting in the same place: red-footed, blue-footed and Nazca. After your walk, there’s another opportunity to go snorkelling.
Continue to Cerro Brujo, whose primary attraction is the coral sand beach. Take time to relax on the sands with the sea lions, snorkel along the shore, or take a walk to a nearby lagoon to see waders such as black-necked stilt, whimbrel and ruddy turnstone. B, L, D
Day 11 San Cristobal Island to Quito
Head into the highlands to visit the giant tortoise breeding centre, La Galapaguera, where you will witness the most iconic creature of the archipelago.
The reserve aims to restore the threatened populations of San Cristobal tortoise back to the wild through a breeding program, and you can learn about the species’ origin, evolution and current threats. The tortoises roam here in semi-natural habitats, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities for photographs.
This afternoon, disembark your cruise and fly to Quito on the mainland. Transfer to the locally rated 4-star Hotel Colon (4Q) for a two-night stay. Dinner is included at your hotel this evening. B, L, D
Day 12 Quito
After breakfast, set off for a full day excursion visiting the Middle of the World, a monument to the Equator, the perfect spot to pose for photos. Next, visit a local coffee farm, and enjoy an included traditional Ecuadorian lunch. B, L
Day 13 Quito to UK
Enjoy an included panoramic city tour of Quito’s Spanish colonial buildings this morning.
Transfer to the airport in Quito for your overnight flight to the UK. B
Day 14 UK
Arrive in the UK for your door-to-door travel service home.
See the Galapagos archipelago in luxury aboard the expedition ship MV Galapagos Legend. Graced with the amenities of a cruise ship, but small enough to cruise to the magical secret spots of the Galapagos, the MV Galapagos Legend is the best way to explore one of the most important and notorious ecosystems on the planet.
Discover the giant tortoises of the Santa Cruz highlands, after whom the archipelago is named; see yellow-crowned night heron and colonies of fur seals frolicking in the clear waters of the Pacific and perhaps even swim with Galapagos Penguins, sea turtles and whitetip reef sharks. As you cruise between islands enjoy panoramic views through picture windows, learn about this unique ecosphere from your onboard Naturalist guides or relax in the pool and boutique. There is no better way to discover the islands that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.
The unique ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands is highly protected by the Directorate of the Galapagos National Park, who constantly monitor and control visitor sites and numbers. As such, this part of the tour is subject to change. The itinerary in Galapagos may vary depending on departure date.
