You will visit the Bellavista fortress, home to the National Museum, and the exquisite National Theatre.

Day 3 Tortuguero

We journey through the stunning Braulio Carrillo National Park, with its dramatic landscape of tropical rainforest and volcanic mountains.

We pass through banana plantations before travelling by boat along the sinuous waterways of the Tortuguero Canals.

We’ll stay in an eco-lodge, in an area of rivers, lakes, wetlands and jungle. In the afternoon, we’ll head out to explore Tortuguero village and visit the Turtle Preservation Centre.

Day 4 Tortuguero National Park

Explore the breathtaking paradise of the Tortuguero Canals. With its unique system of natural and man-made waterways, this is a haven for a wide variety of birds, monkeys, sloths and toucans.

The afternoon is at leisure with the option of a guided walk.

Day 5 Arenal

This morning, we travel through the plains of the San Carlos region, the heart of Costa Rica, to Arenal and its famous volcano.

Day 6 Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge

View local communities as we travel to the village of Los Chiles, where you’ll take a floating safari through tropical rainforests.

The Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge is considered to be one of the most biologically diverse in Costa Rica, attracting a great variety of resident and migratory birds plus three different species of monkey and much more.

Day 7 Monteverde to Cloud Forest

This morning we depart Arenal for Monteverde, located along the continental divide at 5,000 feet above sea level.

We experience the Butterfly Gardens, to observe and learn about these beautiful winged insects. Then venture through the Cloud Forest private reserve to witness the wide array of flora and fauna.

This is one of the few places you may be able to glimpse a quetzal.

You stay at Hotel Montana Monteverde (3*) or Monteverde Country Lodge (3*).

Day 8 Monteverde

Today is free to explore this tropical haven, or take an optional excursion into the cloud forest canopy, a great opportunity to see how the forest works.

Day 9 San Jose

Travel back to San Jose via the picturesque town of Sarchi, famous for its elaborately painted oxcarts.

Day 10 San Jose to Panama City

This morning we take a tour of this fascinating city. Our first stop is at the UNESCO-listed Panama Viejo Historic Monument Complex, where the remains of the oldest European settlement on the Pacific Coast of the Americas are preserved.

We continue to the Historic District, with some delightful colonial architecture. We take a walking tour to view the Palace of the President and the Cathedral. Our final stop on the tour is at the Causeway, which provides wonderful views of the Miraflores locks of the Panama Canal.

Day 12 Panama Canal

In production for almost 400 years between the Spanish, French, and Americans, the mighty Panama Canal was finally completed in 1914 and stands today as both an engineering and economic marvel.

We board our vessel and progress through the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel lock systems. The canal is surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, and there’s plenty of opportunity to spot native wildlife as we go.
