Day 1 UK to San José

San Jose City, Costa Rica

After taking your included VIP door-to-door travel service to the airport, fly to San José and stay two nights at the 4-star Barceló San José (3Q). The hotel's free bar is open from 10am to 10pm. D

Day 2 San José

San Jose, Costa Rica

Perhaps join an optional visit to Irazu Volcano and Orosi Valley, or spend the day at leisure. B, L, D

Optional excursions

Join a trip to Irazu Volcano in the Central Volcanic Range. The summit has several craters, one filled with a green lake. Continue to Orosi valley and the Ujarras for a photostop at a viewpoint, then after lunch at a local restaurant, visit La Basilica church.

Day 3 San José-Tárcoles

An included morning tour of the capital visits the National Museum and the National Theatre. Travel to Tárcoles (50 miles, 90 minutes).

Spend four nights at the 3-star Hotel Villa Lapas (3Q) in a private reserve on the River Tarcolitos, staying in basic, bungalow-style lodges. Free bar from 10am to 10pm daily. B, L, D

Day 4 Tárcoles

An optional excursion visits one of Costa Rica's most beautiful reserves where turquoise waters lap white beaches fringed by lush rainforest. You may see sloths, iguanas, howler and white-faced monkeys. B, L, D

Optional excursions

Enjoy a walk in the rainforest in the company of a naturalist guide. The dense forest here camouflages toucans, parakeets and hummingbirds. You may see some of the park’s monkeys – the endangered Mono Titi, or Central American squirrel monkey, white-faced capuchin monkeys, and the vociferous howler monkeys. Lunch is included on this excursion.

Day 5 Carara National Park

Look out for scarlet macaws and flycatchers on an included excursion to one of the finest birdwatching sites in Costa Rica. There's also an optional aerial tram ride in the afternoon. B, L, D

Optional excursions

The Pacific Rainforest Aerial Tram (a suspended cable car) is set in 90 hectares of forest. You can also go for nature trails (there are ratings for the varying degrees of difficulty), visit the medicinal plants garden, the heliconias gallery and the snake exhibition.

Day 6 Tárcoles

Optional excursions

Enjoy a full day excursion to picturesque Turtle Island, located 20-miles off the coast of Costa Rica. Here you can partake in a range of activities included hiking, snorkelling and water sports, or simply relax on the stunning white-sand beach.

Day 7 Tárcoles-Muelle de San Carlos

You can join an optional boat ride this morning, venturing onto the river in search of crocodiles.

Travel to Muelle de San Carlos (76 miles, three hours). Stay seven nights at the 4-star Tilajari Resort Hotel (3Q+) for a seven-night stay. The hotel is set in 35 acres of gardens with orchids and a butterfly garden dome. The free bar here is open from 10am to 10pm daily. B, L, D

Optional excursions

Enjoy a two-hour mini-cruise on board a pontoon boat on the Tárcoles River. This river is considered to have the highest number of American crocodiles in the world along the last ten miles before the delta! But crocodiles are only one of the attractions, because the river is also one of the best places in the country to spot tropical birds.

Admire the views over the river

Spend today at leisure, either relaxing at your hotel or exploring your surroundings. B, L, D

Day 9 Rainforest walk

Explore the jungle

Explore the foliage, flora and wildlife of the rainforest on a half-day included guided jungle walk, with a further optional guided walk of the lava trails. B, L, D

Optional excursions

An experienced naturalist guide will lead you on a walk through rainforest to an area near an active volcano. Observe the volcano from the safety of an observation point close to its base.

Day 10 Muelle de San Carlos

Admire colourful birdlife such as toucans

Enjoy the next four days at leisure to take advantage of the hotel's facilities, with a choice of excursions you might like to join. Today's optional excursion is a boat ride down the Peñas Blancas River, with unrivalled opportunities to spot hummingbirds, monkeys, sloths, anteaters and rare butterflies. B, L, D

This guided excursion takes you by a flat-bottomed boat on a gentle journey down the Peñas Blancas River, home to a variety of wildlife, such as monkeys, sloths, iguanas and crocodiles.

Day 11 Muelle de San Carlos

Today you can join a thrilling optional excursion to the rainforest and cross bridges and walkways suspended high above the ground in the canopy. Alternatively, indulge your sweet tooth with a visit to a chocolate plantation. B, L, D

The rainforest canopy walk covers 3100 metres and enables you to enjoy the great diversity of birds and plants. You'll make your way across hanging bridges for an unforgettable experience.

Discover the art of chocolate production with a visit to a chocolate plantation. Learn more about the cacao tree and the production process, from harvesting the fruit, to drying and grinding the seed.

Day 12 Muelle de San Carlos

A two-toed sloth

Visit the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge and enjoy a two-and-a-half-hour floating safari on an optional excursion. At dusk there's an optional excursion to a hot springs complex in the middle of the rainforest. Take a dip in the pools, naturally heated by the Arenal Volcano, stand under a cascading waterfall and enjoy a drink at the bar. B, L, D

The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is an important area of wetlands in northern Costa Rica and is home to three species of monkey, iguanas, sloths, turtles and caymans.

You'll travel to the village of Los Chiles to board a boat for a two-and-a-half hour floating safari through the rainforest and pastures until you reach the birdwatchers' paradise.

Treat yourself to a dusk trip to the middle of the rainforest to enjoy a dip in ecothermal hot springs naturally heated by Arenal Volcano.

Day 13 Muelle de San Carlos

Enjoy live marimba music

See how a Costa Rican family grows pineapples, papayas and medicinal plants on this optional excursion. Enjoy a farewell dinner and live marimba music this evening. B, L, D

Meet a rural Costa Rican family who'll show you the most important facets of a self-sufficient farm. Your tour of the farm also shows you how waste material is recycled in order to produce methane for cooking.

Day 14 Muelle de San Carlos-San José

Return to San José (82 miles, two hours and 40 minutes) and the Barceló San José (3Q) where you stay overnight. En route there will be an included tour of La Paz waterfall gardens. B, L, D

San Jose

Travel to the airport for your return overnight flight to the UK. B, L
