The Crowne Plaza Basingstoke lies around one mile from the centre of the town of Basingstoke. Just north of the town lies the Tudor palace of The Vyne – a National Trust property, while approximately 20 miles to the south is historic Winchester. The town of Basingstoke is the largest in Hampshire and in addition to a good choice of shops including the Festival Place and Malls shopping centres, you’ll also find the Milestones living history museum, and Eastrop Park with its canal heritage footpath, boating lake, cafe and wildlife area.
Inspired by vintage recordings of early American jazz masters, John Shillito borrowed an old cornet and started his playing career whilst still a Sheffield schoolboy. His successful career as a trumpeter, jazz musician and bandleader spans over five decades – he has played and sung at all the major UK festivals, throughout Europe, in Russia and South Africa, as well as in the birthplace of jazz – New Orleans.
The historic city of Winchester was the capital of Anglo Saxon Wessex. Today it’s a busy city where modern facilities and shops sit along side early buildings and charming vistas. The Gothic cathedral that lies at its heart has one of the longest naves in Europe and is where Jane Austen and St Swithun are buried. It is also where Kings Alfred the Great and Canute were once laid to rest. You'll learn more about this stately building on a guided tour during your excursion. If there’s time you may also want to visit the Great Hall, where the Round Table of Arthurian legends is mounted on the wall. Built in 1235, the hall originally replaced part of a castle erected by William the Conqueror which no longer stands. Look out too for the 17-foot-tall statue of King Alfred and the Westgate, the last of the medieval city gates.

John Maddocks Jazzmen
Headed by clarinet player John Maddocks, this traditional jazz band has its own distinctive sound and have toured both in this country and aboard for decades. In addition to John’s memorable clarinet playing, look forward to hearing both popular and lesser-known pieces played in their own dynamic style.
