The Isles of Scilly are five inhabited islands set amongst countless outcrops and islets. Although just 28 miles from Land’s End in Cornwall, their mild climate makes them a haven for flora and fauna. Holidays in the Scilly Isles offer the chance to catch water taxis to St Martin's, with its untamed coastline, or visit tiny St Agnes – home to just 72 people. Many of the outlying islands are pristine sanctuaries inhabited solely by seals, birds and other wildlife - perfect for exploring on Scilly holidays. A crossing to the second largest island, Tresco, for a guided walk and a visit to the world famous Tresco Abbey Garden. The garden makes light of salt spray and Atlantic gales with the Scillies’ mild climate able to host more than 20,000 species of exotic plants from 80 countries around the globe, many of which would stand no chance of survival even on the Cornish mainland less than 30 miles away. The garden was built in the 19th century around the ruins of an ancient Benedictine Abbey as a private garden for proprietor of the islands, Augustus Smith. At the time there were few trees on the island so Smith opted to plant belts of deciduous trees as shelter. The wind-breaks allowed the carved stone terraces in the garden to thrive, with the hotter drier ones at the top suitable for South African and Australian plants while the humidity lower down favoured flora from New Zealand and South America.
