The Yorkshire spa town of Harrogate lies to the west of York and is well placed for exploring Yorkshire, home to Fountains Abbey, Castle Howard and Harewood House. Harrogate was famous for its mineral waters – reputedly sourced from the Tewitt Well at the end of the 16th century – and subsequently developed into one of Britain's most fashionable spa resorts. Visitors came to ‘take the waters’ and the Royal Pump Room now houses an informative museum. Modern Harrogate is an elegant town distinguished by its attractive architecture, parks and gardens. With its cafes and shopping areas, including the pedestrianised Montpellier Quarter with its 19th-century buildings and boutique shops, Harrogate is perfect for exploring, sightseeing or just relaxing.
