If you’re the model of a modern major general, three little maids from school or just someone with a love of all things Gilbert and Sullivan, this four-night special interest holiday is for you. The International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival was established in 1994 and in the ensuing years performing groups and fans have come from all over the world to attend and take part. At its heart is a competition, with amateur Gilbert & Sullivan performing companies showcasing their productions and competing for the coveted trophy.

Situated at the end of a private drive and just under a mile or about twenty minutes’ walk from the city centre, the 4-star Crowne Plaza Royal Victoria (4Q) (formerly the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria) is a Grade II-listed building offering charm and character while being tastefully and sympathetically decorated throughout. Being just seven miles from the Peak District, it is also wonderfully suited to visit the national park.
All 105 rooms come with a private bath and/or shower, a television, tea and coffee-making facilities, a safe, hairdryer and free Wi-Fi for Saga guests. Room service is available for an extra charge, and for a touch of luxury and a great night’s sleep you can choose whether you would like a firm or soft pillow from the pillow menu.

Relax in the Grand Lounge Bar and enjoy a variety of drinks and cocktails, before dining in Cunningham’s restaurant.
Approaching from the M1, exit at Junction 33 and follow signs for Sheffield City Centre for about six miles. On reaching Park Square roundabout follow signs for A61N. Exit the roundabout in the far right lane of the A61N Barnsley. Follow tourism signs for the hotel and turn right onto Furnival Road at the first set of traffic lights (50 yards from roundabout). The hotel is situated on your immediate left, located at the end of a private drive. If you use a satellite navigation system, please direct it to Victoria Station Road, as due to a glitch in the satellite system, using the postcode will not take you to the hotel!
There will be free parking at the hotel for Saga guests. Please register your vehicle when you check-in.
The closest rail station to the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria is Sheffield Railway Station, just under a mile from the hotel and about a 20-minute walk. Details of train services may be obtained from National Rail Enquiries on 03457 484950 or through their website. Taxis are available outside the station and will cost approximately £6.
By National Express coach

Transfers to and from the hotel are not included. Your Saga host will meet you on arrival at the hotel. If you wish to pre book a taxi the hotel recommends City Taxis, telephone number 0114 239 3939. City Taxis are not associated with Saga, any contract is between you and them. All queries about their service must be referred directly to them.
Once you arrive Your room will be ready to check into from 2pm onwards. If you arrive earlier than this, your room may not be ready. Porterage of luggage from reception to your room on arrival and from your room to reception on departure has been arranged by Saga.
Matthew first ventured onto the stage 40 years ago when he joined the chorus in a production of L’elisir d’amore. Since that time he has performed a multitude of roles in music hall, plays, musicals, operetta and opera. Matthew now runs Cameo Opera with his wife Judith, performing over 120 shows each year in this country and abroad.
Judith studied at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama and was a member of the BBC Singers before joining the London Savoyards travelling around the world aboard the QE2. She has had a wide and varied career, ranging from early music to grand opera where she has performed more than 40 principal roles in performances worldwide.
Day 1 Arrival
Enjoy tea and coffee on arrival at your hotel with time to settle in before an included dinner. A welcome meeting this evening will be the perfect opportunity to mingle with your fellow music guests and meet your expert hosts, Judith Buckle and Matthew Craven, who will entertain you with an in-house concert of G&S favourites. Day 2 The Pirates of Penzance
This morning you can look forward to a pre-concert talk accompanied by music and song with your hosts. Afterwards, tuck into an included three-course lunch, then join your Saga Host on an orientation walk to introduce you to Sheffield Winter Garden.
Afterwards, enjoy some free time in the city and perhaps stay for an early dinner (at your own arrangement), or return to the hotel and relax. This evening look forward to your first Gilbert and Sullivan performance, given by the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company, The Pirates of Penzance. B,
Day 3 Patience
Look forward to a music talk from your hosts after breakfast this morning, in preparation for your forthcoming evening opera.
After an included lunch enjoy the afternoon at leisure, when you can take it easy at the hotel or do a little independent exploring in Sheffield.
Tonight, you are invited to take your seats at the concert venue for a performance of Patience. B, L
Day 4 HMS Pinafore
Just like the previous two days, your morning will be filled by a talk and some music given and performed by your hosts.
Following lunch, the rest of the day is yours to spend at leisure before an evening performance of the opera HMS Pinafore. B, L
Day 5 Farewell
Depart the hotel after breakfast, having enjoyed the charm, whit and musical excellence that accompanies performances of Gilbert and Sullivan’s music. B

The Pirates of Penzance
Throw together a band of pirates, a bumbling police force, a hapless Major General, and his gaggle of maiden daughters, and you have the ingredients for a rollicking comic opera.

Step aboard HMS Pinafore to discover the captain's daughter is in love with a lower-class sailor, despite her father’s intention for her to marry the First Lord of the Admiralty. She abides by her father's wishes at first, but she later hatches a plan to elope with her beloved - what could possibly go wrong?
