The Lost Gardens of Heligan
This mysterious estate was left untouched from the outbreak of World War I until 1990, when it became one of Europe’s largest garden restoration projects. Today Heligan’s 200 acres are a paradise for the explorer and lovers’ of wildlife and plants. Follow the winding paths, which were laid out over two centuries ago, to uncover Victorian productive gardens and Pleasure Grounds. Look out for the Witches’ Broom protruding from the trunk of an ancient Douglas Fir within the Northern Gardens, and be sure not to miss the Northern Summerhouse with its views across St Austell Bay, and the Sundial Garden, which was said in the 1896 edition of The Gardener’s Chronicle to have ‘the finest herbaceous border in Britain’.

Trebah Gardens
This subtropical Cornish garden, set within a scenic valley, features four miles of footpaths that wind down through exotic plants to a private beach on the Helford River. Stroll past 100-year-old rhododendrons, beautiful water features, giant gunnera and luscious green foliage in this truly magical garden. Perhaps sit back and enjoy the views from Alice’s Seat, a charming thatched structure that was built for Alice Hext, who purchased Trebah with her husband Charles in 1907. The summerhouse is surrounded by scores of plants chosen for their fragrant flowers including Osmanthus and Myrtus.

Trengwainton Gardens
These sheltered gardens are bursting with exotic trees and shrubs. Perhaps take some quiet time out to reflect at one of two Silent Spaces located at either end of the gardens: the Laurel Circle offers a green oasis surrounded by the evergreen leaves of laurels; whereas the summerhouse on the Terrace at the top of the garden has a wide grassy expanse with sea views across Mount’s Bay. You’re encouraged to switch off mobile phones, stop talking and simply enjoy the sounds of nature. You’ll also find a beautifully maintained 200-year-old walled garden and giant tree fern glades within Trengwainton.

Trewithen Gardens
Trewithen has nearly 30 acres of woodland gardens and around 200 acres of surrounding parkland. Head off the beaten track to see an array of trees and shrubs, many of them the result of often dangerous plant hunting expeditions to far-flung places. Be sure to visit the red squirrel pen, part of an important project to reintroduce this indigenous species back to their natural habitat in Cornwall. Other highlights here include the Magnolia Fountain, Camera Obscura and Cockpit.
