Enjoy a musical Christmas break
Join us on this classical Christmas break in the company of your host, concert pianist Jean Phillips. Look forward to in-house concerts and recitals of classical piano works and songs as Jean is joined by guest soprano Ruth Gomme and pianist Gary Branch. There will be a welcome concert, a carol concert and recital on Christmas Eve, while on Christmas Day you can celebrate with a traditional lunch and a light-hearted music quiz. Get Boxing Day off to a great start with a visit to Bodiam Castle, built to defend against French invasion during the Hundred Years War and now owned by the National Trust. Later return to your hotel for lunch and in the afternoon look forward to a recital from pianist Gary Branch, with a final after-dinner concert of ‘Delightful duets’ with Gary and Jean to round off your Christmas break. You depart the next day after breakfast.

Food and Drink

The hotel is situated approximately three and a half miles from the town of Uckfield where you will find a range of shops and facilities. The town of Lewes with its independent shops, antiques emporiums and eateries is approximately nine miles away, as is the the small town of Heathfield.
Jean is a concert pianist, harpsichordist, lecturer and writer and was a junior and senior exhibitioner at the Royal College of Music. She now specialises in playing period keyboard instruments as well as being a ‘Steinway Artist’. Her concerts include work for the National Trust, Finchcocks Musical Museum, Jane Austen’s House at Chawton and music club and church concerts throughout England.
Soprano Ruth Gomme studied at the Royal Academy of Music and specialises in baroque and classical music. She has sung with such well-known ensembles as The Sixteen and the English Concert and has also performed at Finchcocks.
Gary studied piano at Trinity College of Music and in Amsterdam. Interested in early keyboard instruments and their repertoire, he has performed at venues including Steinway Halls, Queen's College Oxford and was Educational Co-ordinator at Finchcocks.
Set in the heart of 1066 Country, this medieval moated castle was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge and given to The National Trust in 1925. Explore the extensive grounds and venture inside to see historic spiral staircases, battlements and even a portcullis – a very rare example of its kind.
