St Helier, Jersey
Jersey’s capital combines a bustling seaport with tranquil squares, narrow streets and formal gardens. It is guarded by Elizabeth Castle whose guns were turned against the British by occupying Nazis in the 1940s. The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied by German forces in World War II. The five-year occupation came to an end on May 9, 1945, which became known as Liberation Day, an event still marked in Jersey with an annual Bank Holiday. The German Occupation began just a week after the British government had demilitarised the island, fearing for the safety of civilians should there be any conflict. It is believed that Germany targeted Jersey after reconnaissance planes mistook farm vehicles for troop carriers. During your holiday perhaps visit Jersey's historic war tunnels, originally intended as an underground barracks and ammunition store for the occupying forces. Jersey residents had to choose whether to remain on the island and those who opted to stay found ways to resist for five years.
John has been a keen musician from an early age, playing clarinet, piano and guitar. He was also a Cathedral Chorister at Gloucester from the age of 8.

Jersey War Tunnels and island tour
Planned as a bomb-proof artillery barracks and ammunitions store by the Germans during their occupation, this amazing complex was never completed. Instead, it was converted into a casualty receiving station in the weeks leading up to D-Day because of its central location on the island. The tunnels are an engineering marvel, as the whole complex was excavated on a slope so that it drains naturally through an ingenious arrangement of pipes and culverts. This system still functions today, keeping the tunnels dry – despite their age. Following your tour of the tunnels you can look forward a tour of the island.
