Antalya city tour
Before Becoming a popular tourist destination, Antalya was simply a city home to plenty of history and eye-catching architecture. Far from overlooked, its list of visitors includes Roman Emperor Hadrian whose arrival in AD 146 is commemorated by an impressive gate. You can see Hadrian’s Gate during this half-day city tour. Other prominent landmarks include the Broken Minaret, whose rising form is all that is left of a religious complex in use since the 2nd century AD, and the impressive 18th-century Tekeli Mehmet Pasa Mosque.
The old district itself, known as Kaleici, is an inviting warren of narrow lanes, punctuated by shops and overlooked by charming two-storey houses. A short walk will take you down to the old harbour, founded by the Romans and remaining the centre of local life. It is perhaps no wonder that the area features plenty of restaurants and cafés, filled with patrons who watch the small boats trundle in and out of the harbour. The Archaeological Museum, on the western side of Antalya, boasts extensive artefacts from the Bronze Age, through Roman rule and into the Ottoman era. It is often described as one of the country’s finest museums.

Demre and Myra
Travel to Demre, an ancient town long associated with St Nicholas. Among many myths associated with the saint, he is credited with having thrown three purses of gold down the chimney into a poor man’s house one night to provide a dowry for the man’s three daughters. Thus, the concept of Santa Claus or Father Christmas was born, embellished by Coca Cola in the 20th century.
Enjoy a visit to the Church of St Nicholas, a major site of pilgrimage originally erected to house the saint’s tomb. His remains were stolen by Italian merchants in the 11th century, however, his sarcophagus can still be seen. Following the removal of St Nicholas’s remains, the church fell into disrepute until 1862 when Russian Tsar Alexander I began renovations and added an eye-catching bell tower. A mile and a half outside Demre is Myra, an ancient Lycian city buried by an earthquake in AD 141. The ruins feature a selection of tombs and one of the largest and best-preserved Roman theatres in Turkey.
