Day 9 Bern-Zurich-UK
Travel to Zurich airport for your return flight to the UK. B
The journey to Europe's highest altitude railway station is a fascinating experience. Take the Wengernalp Railway – Switzerland's longest stretch of cog railway – up to Kleine Scheidegg where you transfer to the Jungfrau Railway. Travel the final 9.3 kilometre stretch on a one-metre-gauge cogwheel section railway, which in places tunnels through the mountain, with various viewpoint stops. At the top there are exhibitions about the development of the railway as well as an ice palace inside the glacier – be warned you will be walking on ice and while there are handrails, it is still slippery underfoot. There is also a restaurant, and a place where you can enjoy some snowy fun, quite an experience in the middle of summer! Please remember that it can be chilly at the top of Jungfraujoch, so you will need to take a coat and possibly a hat, gloves and scarf and wear waterproof shoes with good grips. Some visitors suffer from slight altitude sickness due to decreasing oxygen levels. Take a bottle of water to drink as keeping hydrated helps. The journey from Wengen takes approximately one-and-a-half hours each way.
Optional on 8 nights itinerary
Travel by train and walk the narrow lanes to the town's historic heart – the Piazza Grande – on a two–hour walking tour. The town is steeped in history; remains reveal that it has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, with its geography leading it to develop as a trading post. The pilgrimage church of Madonna Sasso sits above the town and commands fabulous views of the city, the lake and the mountains. The 14th-century Castello Visconteo is home to a fascinating archaeological museum.
