City of Lausanne, Switzerland

Arrive into Lausanne and check into your hotel, the Best Western Plus Hotel Mirabeau (4Q). Enjoy a welcome drink followed by an evening meal served in the hotel’s restaurant to get to know your fellow traveller a little better. D

Day 2 Lausanne

Olympic Museum, Lausanne

On today’s tour, you will discover how Lausanne came to be and why it was chosen to be the home of the International Olympic Committee. Your guided walking tour will reveal that the settlement was originally founded on the other side of Lake Geneva and moved to its current position when its inhabitants fled in the face of a fourth-century invasion.

Discover how the city became a haven for radical thinkers throughout the 16th century and see several of its most notable landmarks. Rest your feet and purchase lunch during some time at leisure before visiting the Olympic Museum. Opened in 1993, the museum offers an opportunity to experience the excitement of the games first-hand. Trace Olympic history from ancient antiquity through the ages and into the modern era. It is the largest centre of information relating to the Olympic Games in the world. B, D

Day 3 At leisure

Lausanne and Lake Geneva

The day is yours to fill however you choose. By staying at one of the city’s hotel you will be provided with a free Lausanne Transport Card, allowing you to travel for free on public transport (bus, train, metro) and giving discounts to many museums and shops. B, D

Day 4 Chaplin’s World and Chillon Castle

Chillon Castle, Switzerland

The district of Corsier-Sur-Vevey, with access to the Montreaux Riviera, has a unique way of captivating its visitors.

Charlie Chaplin, the iconic bowler hat-wearing film star, was one such visitor who fell in love with the area. He spent 25 years of his life here and his mansion has subsequently been turned into a museum, Chaplin’s World, complete with a purpose-built interactive studio offering a window into silent movies. Your exploration of Chaplin’s home will reveal original furnishings and personal belongings, painting a picture of the legendary figure and his unusual upbringing. In the studio, you will experience all the fun of the fair on the set of ‘The Circus’ and recognise the machinery from ‘Modern Times’, two of Chaplin's most famous films.

Leaving the lights of Hollywood behind, travel to Chillon Castle. The fortification stands on the shoreline of Lake Geneva and for four centuries provided residence for the Counts of Savoy, who would monitor – and tax – traffic that passed by. It is a stunning and historical site, brought to life by your guide. B, D

Day 5 Glacier 3000 and Golden Pass

Glacier 3000, Switzerland

Today will showcase what Switzerland is all about. Alpine views enjoyed from the comfort of a trundling train and glacial peaks that disrupt the horizon and make for great photographs.

Begin with a cable car journey to Glacier 3000. Located at the highest point of the Vaudois Alps, the summit station is a modern construction that offers an extensive panorama. Make sure your camera has plenty of battery as the views are simply irresistible, featuring 24 peaks – including Mont Blanc visible in the distance on a clear day. During your time here, you will have the opportunity to walk across the bridge suspended between two mountain peaks, a truly unique experience.

Take the cable car back down and transfer to Gstaad. Having arrived, it’s all aboard the train that will take you along the Golden Pass. Sit back and let the stunning scenery slip by. You will then transfer onto another train back to Lausanne, where dinner is served at the hotel. B, D

Day 6 Gruyère

Medieval Town of Gruyeres, Switzerland

Today you will explore the splendour of the Gruyère region and discover its ability to create Switzerland’s most famous cheese and of course the country’s fabulous chocolate.

At Maison Cailler, a chocolate factory in Broc, you will follow the story of this popular product, from Aztec cocoa ceremonies to modern creations, and indulge in a tasting afterwards. Spend some free time in the town of Gruyères, where houses have retained their medieval characteristics and are overlooked by an impressive 13th-century castle. La Maison du Gruyère is your final destination, a cheese factory at which master cheesemakers create the hard, yellow Swiss cheese named after the region. Twice per day farmers deliver their milk to the factory to be turned into 48 wheels of cheese. Follow the process of creation and enjoy a tasting of Gruyère cheese. B, D

Day 7 At leisure

Lausanne's gothic cathedral behind Charles Bessieres bridge

Today you have the opportunity to explore independently and see the sights on Lake Geneva at your own pace. B, D

Day 8 Lausanne to UK

Check out of your hotel for the return journey back to the UK, having experienced Quintessential Switzerland. D

What to explore

During your Stay and Discover experience, you will have two days without planned excursions. How you fill those days is up to you. Perhaps you would like to explore Lausanne in a little more depth, by visiting the city’s 12th-century Gothic cathedral. Its nave is breathtaking – often bathed in warm light cast down by stained-glass windows – and from its tall bell tower you can enjoy views across the city and Lake Geneva to the Alps-filled horizon.

For a different perspective, you might like to book a cruise along Lake Geneva to see the city reflected in this pretty waterway. Alternatively, spend the day exploring the Lavaux wine region. After all, its soil and climate are responsible for creating wine popularly stocked in cellars across the world.

Your hotel
