Rodalquilar Abandoned Mining Area

Distance: five miles

Difficulty: Easy, some uneven surfaces

Once a thriving alum and gold-mining town, Rodalquilar offers a fascinating insight into the lives of the people who lived and worked in this region. Learn about its geology and ethnography on your walk and visit Cortijo del Fraile. This ruined farmhouse has a dark past which gave the dramatist Federico Garcia Lorca the inspiration for his tragedy Blood Weddings.

Alpujarra Mountains

Distance: nine miles

Difficulty: Moderate with ascents and descents

Lying between the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean is La Alpujarra, an area prized by the Berbers for its beauty. With a long farming history, the southern slopes have been worked into terraces by farmers and, in summer, goats graze high in the mountains. In this lovely part of southernmost Andulcia you'll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views.

Cabo de Gata Natural Park

Distance: three miles

Difficulty: Moderate, with some ascents

Walk through one of the last protected areas of Mediterranean coastline, all far from the madding crowd. Here, where the volcanic landscape falls to the sea, you'll come across stupendous views of deserted coves and beaches, and see distinctive local flora. Look out for the diminutive Dragoncillo de Cabo – a pink snapdragon – and Europe's only native palm, Chamaerops humilis.

Tabernas desert

Distance: four and a half miles

Difficulty: Moderate, mostly flat

Much used as a film location, this marine sedimentary basin has amazing land formations. Here you can walk on what millions of years ago was the sea bed. Learn about the geology of the region and see plant life that can survive with little water. See the ghoulishly named parasitic plant dead man's fingers Cynomorium coccineum - which looks like something out of a horror movie, oleander, sea lavender, tamarisk and the pretty purple mistress, also known as violet cabbage.
