Your birdwatching programme
Cabo de Gata Natural Park – the marshes and wetlands: Taking in mountainous, mainland and coastal areas, this Natural Park is the Mediterranean coast's largest protected area and is also a Biosphere Reserve and Special Bird Protection Area. Look out here for the marsh harrier, hoopoe, curlews and greater flamingo.
Cabo de Gata Natural Park – the Steppes and Gypsum: Discover more of the park as you visit the steppes and gypsum areas, watching for birds including the blue rock thrush, black wheatear, little owls and perhaps even the colourful bee-eater.
Tabernas desert and mid arid mountain: This arid semi-desert region is home to the lark, European roller, wagtails, and more. Keep a lookout for kestrels and – if you're lucky – even a golden eagle.
The west coast of Almeria – wetlands: Head for the wetlands where water birds include the Andouin and slender-billed gull, ducks such as the shoveller and shelduck, plus grebes and more.
Los Vélez Natural Park: This diverse park with plains, mountains and woodland boasts over 100 species of birds. It's also a 'special protection zone' whose 'stars' include the griffon vulture and lesser kestrel.

Almeria boasts the most hours of sunshine in the whole of Spain and is an intriguing blend of deserts, wild beaches and Moorish whitewashed houses. The wealth of farming communities surrounding the area here mean that local produce is deliciously fresh and there's a distinctly traditional Andalusian culture prevalent in the villages of this region.
