Discover the birdlife which thrive in Costa Blanca’s sun, sea and skies

Find out why countless species of birds call the coasts and peaks of Spain’s Costa Blanca their home during a hotel-stay in Denia, an historic seaside town.

After an introductory presentation from your expert host, head into neighbouring Montgó Natural Park on a half-day excursion on the first day of your holiday. A full-day excursion to Albufera de Valancia reveals the third largest wetland reserve in Spain while a trip to Pego marshes offers the opportunity to spy migrant species like skylarks, reed bunting and kingfisher. Head to the peaks of the Alicante Mountains to spot firecrest and woodpecker, though griffon vultures and golden eagles may also be present.

The Natural Park of El Fondo boasts a reservoir which is home to the rare white-headed ducks and red-knobbed coots while at the salt pans of Santa Pola thousands of flamingos are resident, plus visitors include godwits, avocets, sandpipers and plovers.

Drive to the Steppes of Alicante in search of great bustard and little owl, among others, while be sure to keep an eye out for golden eagles and red kites which are common in this area.

Enjoy all these experiences during a stay at the 3-star Hotel Port Denia – exclusively available to Saga guests in the UK market. If you want to venture away from your club-style hotel then you can experience a slice of authentic Spain in Denia with its bustling harbour and 12th-century castle, and perhaps head further off the beaten track in nearby Mount Montgó Natural Park.

Day 1 UK to Denia

Hotel Port Denia

Fly to Spain and transfer to your hotel where you can look forward to a welcome reception.

Day 2 Montgó Natural Park

Black redstart

This morning you will have an introduction talk with expert host Manu Mojarro who will deliver a presentation about the birds and habitats you can expect to see.

After lunch head to the local reserve Montgó mountain and Sant Antonio Cape. Keep an eye out for common crossbills, blue-rock thrush, Sardinian warbler, black redstart and maybe even the elusive peregrine falcon. If the day is clear you might be able to see Ibiza from the sea cliffs.

Day 3 Albufera de Valencia

Flooded rice field in Abufera Natural Park, Valencia

This large reserve – the third largest wetland in Spain – has 14.000 hectares of paddyfields which are flooded for the hunting season between October and mid-February, after which the farmers dry out the fields to plant rice in May.

The reserve attracts many wintering raptors including marsh harriers, booted eagles and common buzzards, gulls like audouin’s, yellow-legged, black-headed and lesser black-backed and glossy Ibis. On the reeds and farmland look out for finches, little egrets, meadow and water pipits among other birds. We will also visit some ponds to add black-necked grebes and waders. In the surrounding pine forest, hoopoes are common.

Day 4 Pego marshes and Alicante Mountains

The bluethroat lives up to its name

Pego marshes are one of the many small wetlands spread along the Mediterranean coast. They play a vital role for many migrants as re-fuelling places. We will look for some resident birds such as moustached warbler and glossy ibis. In addition, some of the wintering species we might see include skylarks, reed bunting, penduline tit, bluethroat, kingfisher and cetti’s warbler. The rest of the day we will be exploring the highest mountains of Alicante looking for forest species such as crested tit, firecrest, Iberian green woodpecker or short-toed treecreeper. Some years wintering ring ouzels and hawfinches are common. Look out for vultures and other resident raptors such as the Golden Eagle.

Day 5 Denia

Denia, Spain

Enjoy a day at leisure.

Day 6 El Fondo Natural Park and Salinas de Santa Pola

Western purple swamp hens

Start the day by visiting the Natural Park of El Fondo where a man-made reservoir holds more than 70 breeding pairs of the globally threatened white-headed ducks and red-knobbed coots. In addition, it is an excellent place to see the colourful purple swamp-hens. There should be also good number of waders and wildfowl including shovellers, teals, red-crested and common pochards among others. Little bittern, osprey and hen harrier also use the marshes as wintering grounds.

After lunch head to the salt pans of Santa Pola, an excellent area to see slender-billed audouin’s and Mediterranean gulls. Marsh harrier, spoonbill and great white egret are relatively common species during autumn. In addition, there is an impressive resident population of a few thousand greater flamingos and wintering waders including godwits, avocets, sandpipers, redshanks and plovers.

Day 7 Steppes of Alicante

A thekla lark

Take a two-hour drive to the steppes between Alicante and Murcia to explore the open habitat and keep an eye out for great bustard, pin and black-bellied sandgrouse and little owl. There are also numerous species of larks to test you, including calandria, lesser-short toed lark, thekla and crested lark. Golden eagles and red kites are frequently seen in the area.

Day 8 Denia-UK

Unless you have chosen to extend your holiday by another week, check out after breakfast and transfer to the airport for your return journey to the UK.
