From your peaceful location in the stylish locally rated 4-star TRYP Lisboa Caparica Mar hotel (4Q) on the ocean shore, you can explore the many facets of the region, both in and around the Portuguese capital. This holiday is the perfect blend of historic grandeur, village charm, vast landscapes and precious moments.

Where the Tagus meets the ocean is your home while you explore Lisbon and its environs. The capital will seduce you with its 2,000 years of history and unique character. You’ll discover the many unmissable treasures further afield, such as the natural landscape of the Arrábida where the mountains meet the sea and the quaint fishing village of Sesimbra’s whitewashed houses and imposing Moorish castle. You’ll head to Evora, a celebrated town so well-preserved it is the best example of Portugal’s golden age, since much of Lisbon was lost in the great earthquake of 1755. As well as understanding the region’s history and landscape, you can get into the soul of its people by hearing the heart-rending songs of fado, sharing their passion for wine and food, and trying your hand at one of the crafts that defines the country to this day.

Day 2 Lisbon

View over Rossio Square, Lisbon

This morning, you’ll set off on a tour of Lisbon’s famous sights and acquaint yourself with this stunning city. Set on seven hills on the banks of the River Tagus, Lisbon has been the capital of Portugal since the 13th century. The city is famed for its majestic architecture, old wooden trams, Moorish features and over twenty centuries of history.

In the afternoon, you can sit back and hear about Portugal’s intriguing past during a history talk. B, D

Day 3 Portuguese Riviera

Pena National Palace, Sintra

Today there will be a morning tour of the Portuguese Riviera.

Our first stop is Sintra, a sight to behold and a UNESCO-recognised Cultural Landscape thanks to its Romantic architecture. The town, which has retained much of its medieval layout, is home to Sintra National Palace, also known as Palácio da Vila – the only survivor of the country’s Royal Halls, dating from the Middle Ages.

You’ll return via Cascais and Estoril, two of the finest coastal resorts in this playground of the rich and famous. B, D

Day 4 Day at Leisure and wine tasting

Costa da Caparica, Portugal

With the day at leisure, you can head out exploring independently, relax at your hotel or perhaps join an optional morning yoga session on the beach. This evening there will be an included wine tasting session at the hotel, allowing you to sample a range of wines from a local producer. B, D

Day 5 Arrábida Nature Park

Sesimbra, Portugal Riviera

Glorious scenery and views await on your half-day drive to the old fishing village of Sesimbra, which lies at the foothills of the Serra da Arrábida mountain range and is lined with traditional whitewashed houses.

You’ll also stop off at Azeitão to sample its famous Moscatel wine – a particularly rich and sweet dessert wine with floral notes. Later, enjoy an atmospheric evening of fado at the hotel. This melancholic and expressive music genre originated in the early 19th century and is often performed in Lisbon’s pubs, cafes and restaurants. B, D

Day 6 Evora

Chapel of Bones, Evora

You’ll spend the day in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Evora, capital of the Alentejo region.

Soak up the history with the Roman temple to Diana, medieval gothic cathedral and centuries of architecture in the old town. Keep an eye out for the Chapel of the Bones, and Giraldo square where the Inquisition once had its headquarters. B, D

Day 7 Caparica Market and cookery demonstration with lunch

Coastline of Costa da Caparica, Portugal

Head to Caparica Market, taking in some of the sights of the local area en route. At the market you’ll be able to pick up fresh ingredients before heading to a local restaurant for an included cookery demonstration. This is a great way to mingle with the locals and learn a few Portuguese cookery tips. Your cookery demonstration is followed by a leisurely Portuguese lunch –an authentic taste of Portugal and the perfect conclusion to your holiday.

The rest of the day is at leisure. B, L, D

Day 8 Lisbon - UK

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and transfer to the airport for your return flight home. B

What to explore

Head into Lisbon where you can hop on one of the many wooden trams still trundling through cobbled streets or wander through neighbourhoods full of character. In contrast to the narrow lanes, your next turn could lead into a grand square or one of the manicured parks and gardens. Naturally, the Tagus waterfront is the perfect place for a stroll or you can admire the view from the impressive cable car!

And of course, when in Lisbon, don’t forget to make time for a delicious Pastéis de Belém, the first and best Portuguese custard tart, for which the city is famous. With the beach on your doorstep, you can relax on the sandy shores or have a go at surfing. And if you want to stay away from the sand, visit one of the local golf courses – but try to stay out of the bunkers!
