Eastern Algarve

Tour the eastern Algarve, a region of tempting sand beaches dotted with quaint fishing ports. First visit Faro, the capital of the Algarve to see the 13th-century old town, then continue to the Moorish fishing town of Olhao. Visit the charming old town of Tavira to admire architecture from many periods right back to the 4th-century Roman Bridge. Then on to Gilao and the tiny waterfront village of Cacela Velha. Finally head to Monte Gordo and Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Portugal’s border town separated from Spain by the River Guadiana.

Guidiana river cruise

The meandering Guadiana River runs into the Atlantic just over three kilometres east of Monte Gordo. The river has been a natural frontier for more than 2,000 years. In 27 BC the Romans chose the river to mark the boundary between the provinces of Lusitania and Baetica, which were to become Portugal and southern Spain. You sail up the river, and enjoy lunch in a typical restaurant in a local village.

Lisbon

Traditionally said to have been founded by Ulysses, Lisbon was an important trading post in Phoenician and Roman times, but although numerous older buildings still survive, the city as it stands today was largely rebuilt after a violent earthquake in 1755. This excursion gives you time to discover the delights of Portugal’s capital, arriving in time for lunch and shopping. See the arcaded 18th-century Terreiro do Paço, also known as ‘Black Horse Square’ from the equestrian statue of King José I, pass under the Ponte 25 de Abril, one of Europe’s longest suspension bridges, en route to the Jerónimos Monastery, the Bélem Tower and the Monument of the Discoveries and look out for the quaint old trams as you explore the narrow alleyways of the Alfama district.

Seville

You'll cross the border into Spain to explore the beautiful capital of Andalusia. View the Santa Cruz district with its narrow lanes, the Alcázar or Moorish Palace and the vast Seville Cathedral – Europe's largest Gothic church. It was built on the site of a mosque, of which the orange tree patio and minaret, now called the Giralda, still survive today. Other sights of interest include the Torre de Oro – a medieval defensive tower by the River Guadalquivir, and the Plaza de España. Built for the Ibero-American Exhibition in 1929, this beautiful square has 58 benches, each decorated with ceramic tiles depicting the different provinces of Spain. No entrances are included.

As you'll be crossing the border into Spain, you'll need to bring your passport with you.

Silves and Monchique

Drive to the old Moorish town of Silves, formerly the capital of the Algarve. In Moorish times the city had a population of over 30,000, but its value as a port diminished with the silting up of the River Arade. Now the only relic of Moorish times is the Alcazaba, with its red limestone walls reinforced by massive square towers. The town’s most impressive monument is the former cathedral, which has tombs of the Crusaders who died while helping the King of Portugal capture the town from the Moors. After exploring Silves, you'll continue to the Monchique Mountains, known as the ‘Green Heart of the Algarve’, and Mount Foia, which at 902 metres is the highest point in the region. Monchique is known for its spa baths, used for the treatment of rheumatism.
