Beachside holidays in Petrovac

If you’re looking for an affordable option on the Adriatic coast, your best bet is to head to Petrovac on the Budvanska Riviera in Montenegro.

Not only does this former fishing village feature a beautiful bay surrounded by pine forests and citrus groves but you’ll also have access to the historic walled city of Budva and the largest lake in the world, Lake Skadar. Straddling the Montenegrin and Albanian borders, Skadar is one of many day trip options that you can take if you’re on holiday in Petrovac.

Alternatively, you can simply stay put and soak up the sunshine at the fine red shingle beach or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the prom to see if you can spot the islets of Katic and Sveta Nedjelja. You’re on holiday after all, why not just relax and ease into an evening of seafood suppers as the sun sets.

This beautiful area of the Adriatic stretches out on both sides from Budva. It’s the perfect place to spend your holidays in Petrovac enjoying easy going days at a succession of beaches as well as boat trips to the rocky offshore islands of Katic & Sveta Nedjelja. Elsewhere on the Budvanska Riviera, you’ll find the fortified fishing village of Sveti Stefan. This is where terracotta tiled roofs and azure Adriatic views have created one of the most handsome highlights in the whole of Montenegro.

If you’re looking for an excursion during your holidays in Petrovac, head to Skadar Lake National Park. Just 45mins’ drive from the coast, Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans straddling both sides of the Montenegrin border with Albania. It’s incredibly picturesque with isolated island monasteries and swooping mountain slopes creating no end of options for hikers and photographers, alike. Also, don’t forget your binoculars. The park is home to one of Europe’s largest bird reserves and supports numerous indigenous species including successfully breeding, yet endangered, Dalmatian pelicans.

If you’re looking for highlights in Montenegro, Rustovo Monastery is in no short supply. The hillside setting, alone, is well worth the visit with all-encompassing views over the Adriatic, simply unsurpassed. Situated in Rustovo Village, just outside Budva, the monastery is now a working nunnery as well as being the focal point for walkers making the most of the Pastrovka forest trails.

The flight time from the UK to Petrovac is around 3 hours.

Currently, British passport holders travelling to Petrovac don’t require a visa unless staying for longer than three months. Visit GOV.UK for more advice about entry requirements to Montenegro or, alternatively, visit CIBT visas for more information.

Petrovac is at its best during the warm summer season that last from April through to the end of September. Temperatures can really soar along this stretch of the Adriatic and finding a hotel with a pool is almost essential. Once the weather gets colder, however, most of the seaside resorts and restaurants tend to shut up shop. Winter is very cold inland although it’s fairly mild along the coast.

Petrovac is just an hour ahead of UK time.

The official language spoken in Petrovac is Montenegrin although the majority of hoteliers, hiking guides and staff working in resorts will be fairly well versed in English.
