Escape to Sardinia, Italy’s long-lost cousin

The football at the end of mainland Italy’s boot, Sardinia is home to miles of white sand beaches, rocky coves, traditional villages and plenty of sunshine! Your accommodation is fit for royalty. Indeed, this area of the island – Porto Cervo – was developed by Prince Karim Aga Khan. From your hotel, Luci di La Muntagna (QQQQ), you can gaze out over the yachts in the marina or turn your attention to the outdoor pool, two bars and a jacuzzi.

Relax in the Sardinian sun or join an included excursion to explore Costa Smeralda – a beautiful stretch of coastline – and the villages belonging to the island’s wilder, untouched interior.

Tempio Pausania, Aggius & Castelsardo

Sardinia’s interior is a little different from its glittering and glamourous coast. Traditional granite villages display a rustic way of living that has been lost elsewhere on the island. Begin your excursion with a walking tour through one such village – Aggius. It is located 1,686 feet above sea level and is overlooked by several dramatic rock formations. It is a village that has built a reputation for creating fine textiles. You will have the opportunity to step into two of Aggius’s modest museums. One explores the hardships of rural Sardinian living – often at odds with the Italian state – and the second takes you back to an era of banditry, located in the old magistrate’s court.

Afterwards, you continue to Tempio Pausania, founded by the Romans in the 2nd century AD on an elevated position surrounded by a forest of cork trees. You will also stop a the picturesque town of Castelsardo and enjoy a wine tasting.

Arzachena & Nuraghe

The island’s human history is extensive, think in thousands rather than hundreds of years. This is a fact illustrated by the presence of the nuraghe – truncated conic structures created using huge blocks of basalt extracted from extinct volcanoes.

What is most fascinating about these structures is that little is known about them, apart from their age. It is thought that they date as far back as 1500 BC. In Arzachena, once a quiet town and now a major settlement – you can see many of the nuraghe structures for yourself.
