Anagni & Alatri

For a window into this part of Italy’s ancient past, look no further than the two historic settlements of Anagni and Alatri. Both were home to the rebellious Hernici people – Anagni was their capital – who broke away from Rome in 362 BC only to fall back under the empire’s control 56 years later.

Anagni provided a papal residence throughout the middle ages and it was here that four popes were born: Innocent III, Gregory IX, Alexander IV and Boniface VIII. Its most notable landmark is its cathedral, on which construction began in 1074.

Next, you will see Alatri, located in the Cosa River Valley, 1,640 feet above sea level. This settlement was said to have been built in 1830 BC and is surrounded by formidable ancient walls which enclose an impressive acropolis.

Montecassino Abbey

In AD 529, St Benedict of Nursia established an abbey on Montecassino, the dramatic hilltop overlooking the nearby commune of Cassino. What followed was a history punctuated by glorious rises – the abbey became an important site of Christian pilgrimage, remaining so today – and regular destructive falls.

No fall was more destructive or more tragic than that of 1944. Allied troops, who had fought hard in the surrounding mountains, suspected that German soldiers had occupied the abbey and were using it as a position from which to communicate targets to artillery units. This hypothesis was incorrectly confirmed when a junior officer monitoring enemy radio traffic mistook the German word for abbot for a similar word meaning battalion.

On February 15, American B-17s, B-25s and B-26s dropped 1,400 tons of high explosives onto Montecassino. There were no troops stationed in the abbey. Hundreds of civilians lost their lives, and the world lost the original architecture of one of Christendom’s prize possessions.

The abbey was rebuilt during the 1950s and 60s. Today, it houses a memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives fighting in the area throughout the war and those that died following one of the Second World War’s most infamous mistakes.

Frascati

The Alban Hills have provided high society with a rural retreat since the era of ancient Rome. Luxurious villas and grand mansions punctuate the area’s forested slopes, neighboured by row-upon-row of vineyards.

On this excursion, you will spend some free time in Frascati, perhaps seeking out the 17th-century Villa Aldobrandini, before driving out to a local vineyard for a tasting of the white wine named after the town.
