Day 1 UK to Milan to Boario Terme
Fly to Milan and transfer to Boario Terme (95 miles, two hours), just north of Lake Iseo.
Stay four nights at the 3-star Hotel Brescia Boario Terme (3Q). Facilities at the centrally located hotel include a restaurant, bar, rooftop terrace, and a small, seasonal outdoor pool. D
Day 2 Boario Terme
Spend a relaxing day exploring the area surrounding your hotel. Begin with an orientation walk of Boario Terme, then visit nearby Borgo di Bienno, a picturesque medieval village known as the ‘artists village’, because of its ancient crafting traditions. This afternoon, join a guided walk to Capo Di Lago, a hamlet on the shore of the delightful alpine Lake Moro, which lies nestled in the hills. Alternatively board the coach for a scenic drive to the lake, and meet your fellow travellers there. B, D
Day 3 Lake Lugano
Cross the border into Switzerland for a full day excursion to the magnificent Lake Lugano. Whilst not quite ‘hidden’ it sometimes goes under the radar compared to its illustrious neighbours, Lakes Maggiore and Como. Every year tourists are drawn for the beautiful villages, glorious views, delectable cuisine and outdoor pursuits. Enjoy time at leisure in Lugano, a vivacious city on the lake’s shore. Be sure to explore the old town and take a stroll along the waterfront to admire the views. B, D
Day 4 Lake Iseo
Lake Iseo really epitomises the spirit of this tour – a real hidden gem nestled between Verona and Bergamo. It’s renowned for its lush green mountain backdrop and crystal clear waters. Drive along the northern shore where you’ll join a private boat tour passing the tiny private islands of San Paolo and Loreto, and stopping at the jewel in the crown, Monte Isola.
This gorgeous wooded island appears like a mountain emerging from the centre of the lake, and with no cars allowed, it’s charmingly peaceful to explore on foot. Choose to join a guided walk across the island, or relax on the boat as you continue to Peschiera where you’ll have free time to enjoy panoramic views of the lake, perhaps with a coffee. B, D
Day 5 Boario Terme to Levico Terme
Today, transfer to Levico Terme via Lake Garda (135 miles, three hours), stopping for free time in Desenzano on the southern shores. Beautiful Lake Garda is the largest and the most popular of all the Italian lakes. Admire the dramatic mountains and the clusters of villages that perch on the lake's banks, or visit the Roman Villa of Desenzano with its vivid mosaic floors and museum of artefacts.
Alternatively, walk through the narrow streets of the old town up to the imposing Desenzano Castle, which offers sweeping views across the lake.
On arrival in Levico Terme, transfer to the 3-star Hotel Al Sorriso Greenpark (3Q) for a four-night stay. The hotel is located on the shores of the Blue Flag Lake Levico backed by the Dolomites mountain range. The restaurant serves local cuisine using seasonal ingredients from the organic vegetable garden. Other facilities include a bar, garden, wellness centre with pool and spa, and tennis courts. B, D
Day 6 Levico Terme
Spend the morning at leisure. This afternoon, tour the impressive castles of Trentino. The castles are a defining aspect of the region, a legacy of its historically strategic position between Italy and Austria. First visit Castel Pergine, a Roman settlement converted into a medieval castle, which sits perched atop a hill and commands impressive views over the Valsugana Valley. Continue to Castello Roccabruna, a renaissance-style castle which dominates the village of Fornace, and today, serves as the town hall. B, D
Day 7 Levico Terme
Spend the day at leisure, or alternatively, join an optional excursion to the city of Trento. B, D
Day 8 Levico Terme
Spend the day exploring hidden lakes surrounding Trento. Visit Lake Molveno at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites, located on the edge of the wildlife-rich Adamello-Brenta Nature Park which is home to ibex and the brown bear. Beautiful beaches and forests surround the lake, making it the perfect place for walking and cycling.
Continue to Lake Toblino, a romantic destination overlooked by the magnificent Castel Toblino, and Lake Caldonazzo, a watersports paradise surrounded by tranquil nature. B, D
Day 9 Levico Terme to Milan to UK
Transfer to Milan (199 miles, three hours) for your return flight to the UK. B
The capital of the beautiful Trentino-Alto Adige region, Trento boasts a stunning location, surrounded by mountains. The northern province of Trentino was ruled by a dynasty of Prince Bishops from the 10th to the 18th centuries. Trento has a wealth of churches from all eras, including Romanesque, Renaissance and Gothic church architecture.
Attractions include the cathedral and the Museum of the Diocese of Trento, which is housed in the Bishop’s Palace. The latter includes a display on the famous Council of Trento (1545-63) which was called at the height of Protestant advances to discuss ways in which Catholicism could combat the new creeds.
