See the legendary tenor perform in his native Italy

Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli’s rise to worldwide fame and popularity – he has sold 70 million records – did not appear to be his fate as a boy. Born in 1958, he was soon diagnosed with congenital glaucoma which left him partially sighted. Aged 12 a blow on the head during a football game left him blind. Although a talented musician – he learned the piano, flute and saxophone as a child – Bocelli trained and worked as a lawyer. He continued studying voice, playing and singing in piano bars to fund the lessons. His demo tape of ‘Miserere’ was heard by Pavarotti, and the two performed it together, to popular acclaim.

Having won the newcomers' category at the Sanremo Festival in 1994, his fame grew, and he released the first of a series of hit albums. His duet with Sarah Brightman, ‘Time to Say Goodbye’, was a smash hit in the 1990s and he has since continued to produce albums, including both opera and popular songs, often in collaboration with other well-known singers. The open-air Piazza Castello in Marostica is a truly special venue to see the legendary tenor perform in his native Italy.

12/09/2021 UK to Bassano del Grappa

Bassano del Grappa, Italy

Fly to Venice and transfer to you hotel, a journey of approximately an hour and a half.

After arriving at your hotel accompanied by your Saga host, look forward to meeting your host and fellow guests at a welcome meeting, before enjoying dinner at your hotel. D

13/09/2021 Bassano del Grappa

City walls of Castelfranco Veneto

Your morning begins with an introductory lecture provided by your host who will offer a warm welcome to Bassano del Grappa and outline the upcoming itinerary before taking you on a walking tour through the city’s oldest parts.

During your walk, lead by a local guide, you will trace Bassano’s history, from Roman beginnings, through the medieval era - as a dependency of Venice - and into the 20th century, experiencing the destruction of World War II. After your walking tour, you will have time to purchase lunch before a trip to Castelfranco Veneto. This modest historic town was fortified with walls and a moat in the 12th century, and was the birthplace of Renaissance painter Zorzi da Castelfranco, better known as Giorgione.

Spend time exploring Castelfranco Veneto before returning to your hotel for dinner. B, D

14/09/2021 At leisure

Medieval City Bassano del Grappa

Explore Bassano del Grappa at leisure or join an optional excursion to Venice. B

15/09/2021 Marostica

Marostica, Italy

It’s the day of the concert, beginning with a music-themed talk provided by your host. They will outline what to expect from tonight’s outdoor, intimate performance if you haven’t seen Bocelli perform before, and talk a little bit about the history of Marostica, the town at which the concert is taking place, as well as the evolution of operatic performance.

Following some free time in Bassano, during which you can purchase lunch, you will transfer to Marostica. It is a town positioned between two castles and centred around a checkerboard square, Piazza Castello. Every two years a chess festival with a difference takes place in the square. That difference is that humans fill the roles of chess pieces in a captivating and competitive display that stems from a historical dispute between two knights.

Tonight, however, it is Andrea Bocelli that takes centre stage. Sit down to dinner in a local restaurant located in the town’s surrounding hills. Returning to Piazza Castello, take your seat and enjoy a close-quarters performance given by a living legend of music, accompanied by choir and an orchestra. The first half will be a performance of famous operatic arias, and in the second half, you will be treated to a selection of the tenor’s most popular hits. After the final dramatic notes have been sent out into Marostica’s evening air, you will return to Bassano del Grappa for an included nightcap in your hotel. What could be more suitable than a glass of grappa, over which to talk about the evening’s concert with your fellow guest?

Retire to bed in anticipation of your final full day in the Veneto region of Italy. B, D

16/09/2021 Prosecco wine route

Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, Prosecco wine route

Prosecco is the popularly popped sparkling wine, regularly enjoyed in Italy and as an export across Europe.

On today’s included scenic journey you will travel to the area around Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, where you will be met by miles-upon-miles of vines upon which the ‘Glera’ grape variety is grown. This variety received regional protection – similar to Champagne’s protected status – in 2009 and provides a moderately high acidity perfectly suited to sparkling wine. Enjoy a tasting of three types of wine followed by a transfer back to your hotel.

Sit down to a farewell dinner, an opportunity to reflect on the sights and sounds of your special-interest holiday. B, D

17/09/2021 Bassano del Grappa-UK

Depart after breakfast for your return flight to the UK. B

Venice

The city of Venice – also known as the City of Bridges, the City of Water and, enticingly, the Floating City – is your destination today. The trip is an optional excursion, one that guides you along the Grand Canal – once at the centre of the Renaissance movement – and brings you to St Mark’s Square, home to St Mark’s Basilica. Spot icons of architecture during the walking tour, such as the Bridge of Sighs - from which prisoners would enjoy a final glimpse of freedom - and Doge’s Palace. You will then have time at leisure to purchase lunch and explore independently before returning to your hotel.
