A beachfront stay on the island of Rhodes

Rhodes is the largest and arguably the most popular - of the Dodecanese Islands. It is here that Greece’s ancient UNESCO-recognised past meets its modern, cosmopolitan present, providing the perfect destination for sun-seeking holidaymakers.

Welcoming you to the island is the Sun Beach Hotel (4Q), a family-run, four-star hotel surrounded by palm trees. Its facilities include three free-form, freshwater pools, two restaurants and five bars, but it is the beachfront location that makes Sun Beach so special.

Overlooking Ialysos Beach, the hotel is located less than two minutes’ walk from the water’s edge, perfectly positioned to take a dip in the Mediterranean Sea or relax on a sun lounger before calling into Poseidon Beach Bar for a cocktail. Keeping you occupied during this Signature hotel stay is a programme of included excursions, including a trip to Rhodes Town and a tour of Lindos Island.

Rhodes Town tour

Rhodes Town was founded in 408 BC and has a fascinating history, which you can discover on an included excursion today. Said to be the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe, many of the historic buildings in the old town were built in the 14th and 15th centuries, whilst the new town features much Italianate architecture. You'll see the mighty walls and grand gates which encircle the town, and stroll along the long, cobbled 'Street of the Knights' where, in the 16th century, knights and visiting dignitaries could find a home-from-home and speak their native language in the Inns of the Tongues.

Idyllic Lindos was the site of the major shrine on Rhodes in classical times. It has everything one might expect from a Greek island town: a stunning setting, picturesque white houses clustered around the bay, sun-bleached ruins and a crystal-clear sea. While here, perhaps visit the acropolis which is perched on a cliff 900 feet above two small bays (entrance is not included). The substantial ruins of the Temple of Athena, built in 348 BC, can still be seen, together with a formal gateway, the Propylaia, which dates from 407 BC.

Symi island tour

Today's included boat trip uncovers Symi's heritage which has barely been touched by modernisation. See the sights of one of the smallest of the Dodecanese archipelago which lies very close to Turkey – just six miles away, in fact. Beyond the harbour, which is often bustling with day visitors, the island is a peaceful haven. Symi was once home to the world's largest sponge fishing fleet, and many of the opulent mansions are a vestige of this golden era at the turn of the 20th century.

Filérimos, Butterfly Valley and Kamiros

Join a drive to Filérimos, a hill carpeted in pine forests and capped by a monastery and castle. It was an important sanctuary in ancient times and was once the site of Ialyssos, one of Greece’s important city states. Little remains today of the old city, but there is a fascinating underground chapel decorated with frescoes from the Byzantine period. Continue to Petaloúdhes, the beautiful ‘Valley of the Butterflies’, where millions of Jersey tiger moths breed annually between June and September. If you approach quietly, you can view the moths clinging to the vegetation! Wander through the woodlands of Butterfly Valley and enjoy splendid views from Filerimos Hill. Finally continue to the ancient ruined city of Kamiros – the ‘Pompeii of Rhodes’.

Rhodes panoramic tour

Visit Mandraki Harbour during an included scenic tour of the island today. When the Italians occupied the island from 1913-43 they built an elaborate spa in Kalithea, an area known for its thermal, therapeutic springs, along with various other Belle Epoch architecture. From here you’ll travel through scenery that may look familiar, as several movies have been filmed in this area, including scenes from the film ‘The Guns of Navarone’. On the cliffs above the town is the ancient acropolis of the city of Rhodes – now a park – where you will have the chance to explore ruins from the theatre, stadium and Temple of Apollo.
