Laid-back holidays in Rhodes

Holidays in Rhodes place you on one of the Aegean’s most interesting islands. You can’t go wrong with a couple of weeks on a Greek island, and Rhodes holidays are absolutely no exception.

Situated in the southeast of the Aegean, Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese archipelago and packed full of fun and interesting things to do. Step inside the medieval old town and you’ll be transported to the cobbled streets of the Knights Templar. Elsewhere in the city the imposing turrets of the Grand Masters Palace steal the show alongside the site of the ‘Colossus’ that once stood astride the entrance to Mandraki Harbour. Travel further inland and you’ll find rugged mountain trails and rural hilltop villages overlooking olive orchards and sun-scorched vineyards.

Of course, for many visitors, holidays in Rhodes revolve around the beach. And there sure are a lot of all-inclusive beach resorts and pebble covered coves to go round. However, if you’re looking for somewhere low-key to enjoy the island’s ancient heritage as well as traditional fish suppers on a harbour wall, head to the east coast village of Lindos and you won’t be disappointed.

Although the beaches of Rhodes will always be an inevitable highlight, there’s plenty to be said for a guided tour around the medieval Old Town. Set within a 4km fortified stone wall, this is where you can look out over the Aegean as you walk between the Palace of the Grand Master and St John's Gate. Descend from the ramparts and you’ll find the archaeological museum and Suleman Mosque sitting side-by-side the whitewashed block buildings and alfresco cafés that align the town square.

There’s plenty to be said for an island-hopping holiday in Greece where Rhodes is just one of the Dodecanese highlights alongside the lesser-known settings of Symi and Leros. Staying for a few nights on each island gives you lots of time to relax and explore as well as allowing for organic adventures to unfold alongside guided tours and scenic transfers by catamaran. From the medieval remains of Rhodes to some sublime spots for snorkelling – this is how to experience Greece, in style.

Thanks to the location, between Diagoras International Airport and Rhodes Old Town, the seaside setting of Lalyssos is as scenic as it’s convenient. This is somewhere to book into a full board 4-star resort and enjoy a chilled frappe coffee overlooking the Aegean. Day trips to Rhodes town and the fishing town of Lindos are well worth forgoing an afternoon on the sun lounger or, if you’re up for a hike, the forested slopes of the Attavyros Mountains offer even more active alternatives.

As a British citizen holidaying in Rhodes, all you’ll need is a valid passport, unless you’re staying for longer than 90 days. Visit GOV.UK for more advice about entry requirements to Greece or, alternatively, visit CIBT visas for more information.

Rhodes boasts warm weather all-year-round although the summer months – July and August, especially – have become uncomfortably hot. Best advice is to visit outside of summer in May or September and stay at a resort with a pool or at a seaside town alongside the Aegean.

Rhodes is a couple of hours ahead of the UK.

The island’s official language is Greek although Italian and English are also widely spoken. Head away from the coastal resorts and you might need your phrasebook when visiting the more remote mountain villages.
