This ancient Minoan palace is believed to be more than 4,000 years old and once boasted an amazing 1,400 rooms. It was mainly excavated and partly reconstructed by Sir Arthur Evans from 1899 onwards. Mythology tells us that it was the home of King Minos, whose wife Pasiphae bore the Minotaur, half-man, half-bull, which lived in a labyrinth until it was slain here by Theseus. The extensive complex of buildings is laid out on four levels on Kefála hill, and was originally of two and three storeys. Its rooms, halls and passages date back to 2,500BC, although the remains now visible belong mainly to the Third Palace, which was built after 1700BC. Please note that visiting the palace involves walking on uneven ground and negotiating several flights of stone steps.
Included on 7 nights itinerary
Enjoy a memorable evening of traditional Greek dancing and music at Anopolis Village in the rolling hills of central Crete. Brave a welcome drink of the local firewater (raki) and take a walk through the village – you may like to light a candle in the Greek Orthodox church, hunt out local handicrafts or buy a drink in a cafenion.
Your evening meal is taken in a local taverna, where you will be treated to a typical Cretan menu with plenty of local wine and a display of traditional Greek and Cretan dancing – including a fire dance and a special routine from the film Zorba the Greek.
Optional on 7 nights itinerary
Agios Nikolaos and Spinalonga
Take a boat from Elounda village to the island of Spinalónga. At its northern tip is a Venetian fortress, built in 1579, which withstood Turkish sieges for longer than any other Cretan stronghold. Enjoy stunning views from the ramparts and explore the ruins of the now uninhabited island – known locally as 'the Island of the Living Dead' because it served as a leper colony between 1903-1957.
There is free time to get lunch in Elounda (not included). Later, you drive east along the coast to the resort of Agios Nikolaos, which is built around a deep, natural salt lagoon, linking the sea to a lovely inner harbour. You're free to relax in the numerous bars and cafes, or to hunt out the 8th century frescoes in the Church of Pangia Vrefotrofou.
