Orientation of Larnaca

Enjoy a panoramic tour of some of Larnaca's most intriguing sights. Your first stop will be at the magnificent Church of St Lazarus, where the remains of St Lazarus, whom Christ resurrected from the dead, were laid to rest. Take time to explore the interior with its aisles and domes, icons, silver furnishings and its superb examples of Baroque woodcarving. St Lazarus' tomb is located in the crypt below.

You'll have time for a coffee or a stroll along the palm-fringed promenade before making the short journey to the Larnaca Salt Lake. This lake is the second-largest salt lake in Cyprus and is considered one of the most important wetlands on the island. In the winter, the lake is home to colonies of flamingos and other migratory birds – around 85 different bird species make their home here every year! On the lush banks of the lake is the Hala Sultan Tekke, a very important Muslim shrine which honours the prophet Muhammad's wet-nurse.

Red soil villages

Enjoy a visit to the Kokkinochoria, or 'red soil villages', of rural Cyprus, so named because of the colour of the earth in which the locals grow their crops. You'll be driven through the village of Achna and on to Dherynia village. From here you'll see the haunting 'ghost town' of Famagusta, which was deserted in 1974 when the Turkish invaded and has remained that way ever since.

Next, you'll drive to Ayia Napa, meaning 'holy forest', named for the blanket of dense woodland that once covered this uninhabited region. Nowadays, tourists flock to Ayia Napa, mainly for its golden beaches, crystal clear water, lively nightlife and friendly locals. You'll see the historic side of the town as you pay a visit to the monastery and fishing harbour.

Kolossi Castle and Curium

In 1191, under the command of King Richard the Lionheart, troops travelling to the Holy Land on the Third Crusade became shipwrecked on the shores of Cyprus. Isaac Komnenos, the island’s ruler, took many of those who washed up prisoner, as well as many of their goods. Following failed diplomatic talks by one of England’s most famous kings, Richard chose to instead conquer the island. He did so within a matter of days and became the accidental ruler of Cyprus. Ownership was eventually passed to the Knights Templar who built several fortifications to solidify their power.

One such fortification is Kolossi Castle, completed in 1210. Its tower is built purely for defence and provides clear, unobstructed views of the surrounding areas. After a guided tour of Kolossi Castle, you will then visit Curium. This once-great ancient city was abruptly devastated by a huge tsunami, leaving behind fascinating relics for you to see today. See the restored Greco-Roman theatre, where audiences demanded blood when gladiators took to the stage, and visit the House of Eustolios, boasting mosaic flooring and a complex of baths.

Lefkara and Lace

Take a drive inland to the charming village of Lefkara, famous for its silverware and traditional lace embroidery, known as lefkaritika. In fact, it's not unusual to see groups of women sitting alongside the narrow streets working on their embroidery. Legend has it that Leonardo da Vinci purchased a lace cloth from the village for the Duomo di Milano.

The village has a unique style of architecture and a number of sights, including a folklore museum where you'll learn about traditional Cypriot village life, and the Convent of Ayios Minas where the nuns are known to paint colourful icons. The village is also a great place to buy some souvenirs, including Lefkara lace and silver trinkets, and locally produced Turkish delight.

Nicosia

Join this full-day tour to Nicosia, the world’s only divided capital city. In 1974, Turkish troops invaded the independent island, leading to bitter fighting and a division between the Republic of Cyprus in the south – officially recognised by the EU – and the occupied Northern Cyprus - officially recognised only by Turkey. Tensions have today eased. During your visit, you will be invited to explore its oldest part, surrounded by Venetian walls and divided by the ‘Green Line’, as the divide is known.
